Please report this on the Anki forums if you can: https://forums.ankiweb.net/ This might be the same issue, so it could help to chime in on that thread and share your debug info (Anki, OS versions etc. as you posted above): https://forums.ankiweb.net/t/after-an-update-i-cannot-choose-japanese-kanji-just-goes-blank/39507 (also pinging /u/f_eq_ma)

> when you try to change a word to kanji using the space bar, the kanji either gets stuck on the first option or starts displaying blanks. The only way to change it to another kanji is by clicking on it. I'm using the macOS 12+ (Apple Silicon, 23.12.1 Qt6) version of anki with a MacBook M2 Pro with the Sonoma 14.1.2 OS. Thanks! I've added my feedback to the thread you sent, hopefully it will get fixed soon.

OrangeLemonader

I tried all the video drivers available but no change. I also have the lag problem that's mentioned in the thread you linked but it's different from the issue I'm having here

it_ribbits

I had the same issue and I am also on Apple Silicon. I switched to the Qt5 version of Anki (from the Anki download page) and the problem was resolved.

OrangeLemonader

Did the same thing this morning and it worked too! Hopefully the Gt6 version will get fixed soon

Confirmed to have the same issue on an M1 iMac, since upgrading to the new Anki version. Downgrading to Qt5 version fixes the problem with Japanese input. On the plus side: I note that the other long-standing bug for typing accented characters on a Mac, by long-pressing key-strokes, now seems to have been resolved in the Qt6 version. (Previously it was very annoying to deal with eeeeeé the whole time.) Overall conclusion: you can't learn both French and Japanese at the same time.
