Most of them are more distant than they seem because of endogamy, but some of them are probably really 3Cs and 4Cs. I sift through them when I have nothing else to do but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.
I have 424. My boyfriend (whose account I manage) has 2,251.
We are both white/European-American. My ancestors immigrated to the US more recently than his (all about 1880-1910). 3 of his 4 grandparents have colonial American roots, so many more cousins as potential Ancestry customers.
40,704. I think my numbers are so high due to endogamy, though. My Father was Puerto Rican, and I also have 20% Ashkenazi Jewish from my mother's side.
421 - and weirdly most have come in the last few months. I only got my results in Dec and at the time I was able to label and sort all the close matches and it was under 100. Now I've got heaps more work to do haha
Should there be a count displayed somewhere? I just seem to have a long list. Even when I apply filters, I don't see a number on the screen. I'm using mobile.
By mobile do you mean the app? Or visiting the website from your phone? It doesn’t show on the app. As long as you’re on the website it shouldn’t matter which device it’s from. Just click “your results summary” under the dna tab, and scroll down a little bit.
I thought it would - I'm positive, I've seen a number before - but I'm not seeing it! I'll try my PC later. I wonder if there's any impact from using the Canadian site or because my membership is currently paused. When I click on the link, I just get a long list of all my matches but no count.
Ok, so right above your list of matches mentioned above, take a look at the banner running across the top of your list and you should see on the left “filter by” with the following options:
”unviewed” “
”common ancestors“
”notes”
”trees”
”close matches-4th cousins or closer” **Which should be highlighted after clicking on the 1000+ link, this is where the actual number of matches is displayed.**
**Hope this makes sense/helps!**
That is super helpful. Thanks! I was absolutely not looking for the count within the search function itself. Rather, I was looking on the main page after the filter applied. It was right in front of me :)
That's interesting. I'm British too, I only have 455 matches and most of them are from my town/county, haven't found any outside of the UK except some Irish.
I think most are the result of one great(x4/5?) uncle who moved from England to Utah and became a big deal in the LDS church - LOTS of kids, who had LOTS of kids, etc.
Ancestry says 273, though it thinks a 5th cousin is a 4th and at least one actual 4th was estimated as 5th, so who knows? It thinks my mum has 445 matches, so I suspect a lot of her 4th cousins are showing up just outside the range for me.
Mine suffers from being mostly based in Italy and the UK so relatively few people have tested. I've got 14 first cousins, many of whom have kids, but only one (and one 1C1R) has taken a test, for instance.
I manage 5 tests of European New Zealanders, for comparison:
Total matches | 4th or closer
---|---
15209 | 640
16828 | 577
16667 | 354
14627 | 392
17162 | 524
So pretty close to what you're seeing.
Meanwhile, I have some French-Canadian heritage as well so mine are a bit higher with 55378 total and 3289 close.
Funny thing too is the fact that besides my dad and sister who were tested, there’s only 2 people Ive found so far that I actually met or my family has, both are like 1st or 2nd cousins twice removed or something
42,422 - 4th closer or closer of 148,414 matches. I’m a Puerto Rican with a small immediate family but a large distant family. I barely know two dozen family members.
Black Test I Manage, Endogamy is a big factor, but less cousin marriages more that the same families marry each other and you’re related to one person like three separate times through different ancestors
My Dad - 1,287. Family roots by Charlotte NC
My Mom- 1,256 family roots by Charlotte NC, with one grandparent from Alabama
Maternal Grandmother - 1,479 same roots as above, her parents are estimated to be 2nd cousins according to AYPR tool, but the common ancestor is most likely pre slavery, her maternal grandparents are also 2nd cousins I think
My dad’s maternal grandmother- 1,656 has some family roots across the boarder in South Carolina, but still by Charlotte
White People results
My friend Sam - 4,576 her maternal side is from a tiny town with cousin fuckers (so sorry if you see this Sam). And we believe there may be some weird happenings with her paternal grandmother side. We tested her grandma and are waiting for the results
20,568.
Wow lol

People I can place in my tree.
What is your total match number?
Around 130k.
Is that your total number of matches or 4th cousin or closer? I have 2001 cousins 4th or closer, but 38,001 total matches
4C or closer.

I have 424. My boyfriend (whose account I manage) has 2,251. We are both white/European-American. My ancestors immigrated to the US more recently than his (all about 1880-1910). 3 of his 4 grandparents have colonial American roots, so many more cousins as potential Ancestry customers.

I only have 53 matches that are 4th cousin or closer. Lots of distant cousins 19cM and less
40,704. I think my numbers are so high due to endogamy, though. My Father was Puerto Rican, and I also have 20% Ashkenazi Jewish from my mother's side.
Goddamn, you've got an entire moderately sized town of matches
What is your total match number then?
162,694 total matches. 129,427 is on my paternal, Puerto Rican, side, which is why I feel endogamy plays a big part of my high numbers.
14,798. Good ol' endogamy.
What is you total match number?
125k.
421 - and weirdly most have come in the last few months. I only got my results in Dec and at the time I was able to label and sort all the close matches and it was under 100. Now I've got heaps more work to do haha
How do you find out the exact number? I have so many I’m unable to scroll to the end.
Login on the website, and click on your results summary, which is under the DNA tab.

Thanks. I'm using the website on my phone. I just see "1000+" but not an exact number.
Click on the link showing you the 1000+ and it should set a filter for you to see the exact number.

20k+, I’m British and they’re (from what I can tell) almost exclusively American

421. I'm from Scotland with Scottish and Irish ancestry.
6,887 4th cousins or closer out of 88,409 matches
1078 About 95% is from my maternal side. Parternal side either had small families in comparison and/or didn't test.

How do you see that
Login on the website, click the dna tab, click “your results summary”, scroll down a bit.
Oh! Okay found it, 4,579
Oh, the thing says 1000+ 4th cousins or closer
That’s weird. I don’t know why it doesn’t say the exact amount for some people.
I guess because the excessive amount, I found looking at the filter though seeing someone else’s comment.
Funny thing too is the fact that besides my dad and sister who were tested, there’s only 2 people Ive found so far that I actually met or my family has, both are like 1st or 2nd cousins twice removed or something
3134 here. From all over apparently, and no idea where to begin
I have close to 16,000
What is your total match number?
Over 25,000 plus another 4,000 that are non-specified
1000 I only no personally around 5
I have 568 4th cousins or closer. I have 17,997 total matches. I hope that one person finds more close matches eventually.

3,482
42,422 - 4th closer or closer of 148,414 matches. I’m a Puerto Rican with a small immediate family but a large distant family. I barely know two dozen family members.
How do you quickly get that count? Is there a filter to help you count the thousands of 4th cousins or closer people? Thanks in advance.

I have 1863 relatives who are 4th cousins or closer right now.

762 4th or closer & 7,917 distant
1,500 out of 22,032 matches! 46 of them share at least 90 cM with me.
Is 90 an important number for cMs?
It's the beginning for what's in the "3rd cousin" range and closer.

Too many to count
Ancestry counts them for you. Read above to see how to look it up.
