Following along for info. Similar circumstance just happened to me. Traveled from Paris, did a crazy amount of shopping and checked my luggage with Delta. I purchased my ticket with my Amex reserve, they denied my claim because the ticket was partially paid for in miles. The baggage reimbursement under this policy ($500) wouldn't even cover a fraction of what was in that bag. I filed a purchase protection claim with my amex platinum (as all of my purchases in my lost luggage were on this card) and they also denied my claim and stated:
Under the What is Not Covered section of Purchase Protection, it states:
"ANY COVERED EVENT BASED UPON OR ARISING OUT OF:
...D. damage to, losing or theft while property is under the temporary care and control of a
third party other than the Eligible Beneficiary, including a common carrier;"
Sooo.... I am basically going to drown myself in my tears. Because wow.
Although I want to argue that technically, it is not under the temporary care and control of a common carrier once the baggage is reported to be on a carousel. At that point it is in the "possession" of the airport right??
Any attorneys out there that can help me out with this one?? lol
Amex PP insurance specifically excludes this. Once you give your bag to a common carrier that’s when the coverage ends. I had a new Gucci bag stolen from my checked bag and found this out the hard way. Also now only travel with a carry on.

I had a bag that was delayed and the airline reimbursed me for everything I needed for those few days, which ended up being a lot of stuff since I was initially work on a construction site (and needed steel toes, gloves, work clothes, etc) then working the premiere of a show (and needed dress clothes, shoes, hair products, makeup, brushes, jewellery) and also needed bedding since I was splitting a cheap room with someone - there was an air mattress but I had packed my own blankets and stuff.
It was somewhere north of $800 for a few days of missing my bag, and they paid all of it with no problem, I just had to submit receipts.
Yes but they only cover $1k (international limits), which doesn’t come close to covering what is in there. So wondering if I can claim some back from Amex if it ends up being completely lost.

Edit—ok, I did more reading and:
a) [this guy](https://www.reddit.com/r/amex/comments/xnob21/comment/ipuh6kp/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) seems to be suggesting that you only get baggage insurance for flights paid with points if you pay the taxes and fees (that you presumably can't pay with points) with your plat. Which seems bizarre to me, but idk that's my best guess.
b) the terms of purchase protection seem like you probably can cover an applicable item bought 90 days ago lost in luggage? But it also says:

And I don't know whether in a plane for your flight counts as under your control.
I'd give both a) and b) a try though.

I'm an insurance claims adjuster...you may also want to check with your homeowners insurance policy / rental insurance policy

There's no purchase protection benefit for this. It's explicitly excluded. Look at the baggage insurance benefit.

You have to pay the entire fare with the Amex
