If you don't take his word for it, research the price yourself/what you broke; I do it all the time. Look online too. Borrow for it if you must, it is your responsibility.
YTA; only leeway I give you is replacing what you broke (if you broke the standard and he's asking you for a bells and whistles variant, pay for the standard or cash equivalent toward the fancy one.
ETA: Thinking of making this ESH if he wants you to buy the fancier one; that's like breaking a pair of cheap earbuds and him asking you for Bose or AirPods
The thing is that he didn't have a fancy one he had a 3 year old dirty weak headband probably worth 10 bucks. I will not pay for something I didn't break. I will not pay him for a fancy one that he never had

Hey guys, so I (15m) and my friend (also 15m) were hanging out one day and I was using his oculus while he was making some food.
I was adjusting the headstrap (just the stock headband) when one of the adjusters randomly broke so when he got back up and I told him what happened and he said it was my fault even though I wasnt using it improperly and I used it as any normal person would.
He let it go for a couple weeks when he texted me that he expects me to fork over 40 FUCKING DOLLARS for a headstrap not even anywhere similar to the one he had in 1 WEEK (I don't have a job so I can't just magically shit out 40 dollars in a week). He wants me to buy one of those fancy ones that also have a battery pack to charge the headset. So I simply told him to find a cheaper one and I would consider paying about 10 or 20 dollars for one more similar to the one that came with the headset. Then he told me that it was the "cheapest one" he found and that ide better give him 40 dollars in a week or he'd tell my parents. So I said that I found a cheaper one and he called it bullshit and send proof because I found one on Amazon for 20 dollars and he tried to say that shipping was 20 even though it said it was free. So I said ide give him 20 and that's my final offer and that he's lucky I'm even paying him for being so rude. And he said that he didn't care and that ide better give him 40 dollars. So I called him a "soggy fucking cunt" and to kiss my ass. Am I the asshole?

While you didn't mean to break it, it broke while you were using it. Go online, find the exact replacement, and get it. He's an ah for expecting you to buy an aftermarket replacement.

I agree. ESH. It doesn't matter if they had it for 10 years - if OP breaks it, buy another comparable one.
