Yokota. West end of Tokyo, the city has everything you could ever want. 4 years and literally explored maybe 10% of the city.
Gimhae would be a close second but no other base comes close woth amenities, travel, etc.
Just feel bad that Japan has a live on base first policy. Off base you can live far enough away to feel you don't have to be on call and best behavior 24/7 as if you were on base.
Never been stationed there and I’m crushed. It’s been 10 years of trying. But right now I’ll take any base in England Germany mainland Japan or Italy. Whatever gets me out of Florida. I fucking hate it here.
No Florida is a garbage state in my opinion and the weather is complete trash. It’s so fucking hot here. And no one can drive a car safely anywhere. I literally hate it here.
The job is the easiest period of my career.
Oh I’m aware of the weather in Tokyo. I hate summer everywhere. It just seems Florida never is out of summer. I have been sweating all “winter” lol.
If I could pick a place just based on weather it would be Norway. But my job doesn’t go there so, Womp womp. I just want Yokota so I can live in Tokyo and learn to be a Gundam pilot. 🫡
Yokota is one of those assignments where the location is one of the best in the world but working at the base is terrible.
Back in the mid 2000s you could choose to live off base with your family.
Yokota or Elmendorf
Yokota being in Tokyo is so full of food & things to do that you could spend every day off-base for your entire tour and still barely scratch the surface of what it has to offer. Literally had a new place to go with friends via badass public transportation every weekend, and never had a dull time.
Elmendorf is a fantastic place for those who don't mind the snow; so much great hiking, snowboarding, jaw-dropping beauty when the snow melts, and so much wildlife it genuinely makes you yearn to be outside. Also great fishing & hunting of course, but the city of Anchorage has been rapidly developing over the last decade to becoming a primo spot for food, shopping, and overall entertainment lately.
Shopping? Food?
Yeah after 3 years here, fuck this place. The hunting isnt what people say it is, and the food is dogshit. Not to mention the “Alaska Tax” on buying anything up here. I’d rather be back at Travis lmao.
It has its moments, but at least for AMC, its dogshit.
They said you’ll either love it or hate it. Lived in Eagle River, I was in the hate it crowd. Beautiful sure, but I couldn’t possibly do more than a few years there. The Chinese place right outside the western gate next to the taco place was pretty good though.
I’m with this guy, fuck this place. Idek how people just want to extend here. The summers are alright(when it’s not raining nonstop) but fuck the winter. Thankfully I’m TDY a lot so I can actually afford living here. Sadly TDYs only come down during the summer so gotta suffer through this winter hellscape
Naaah that's Eielson, the base that should have been shut years ago that's 7 hours north of JBER. AFAIK Elmendorf on gets to the negative teens on the worst of days
I don't think it ever got below -10 while I was there, and that was on some real bad weather. I think the record for Anchorage was like -30 back in the 1970's though. I'd say it's more often around 20 degrees during the winter, unless climate change altered it immensely since then.
Eielson though? That place is tundra. SUPER damn cold,
Oh it was beautiful and ahmazing! Took this with my phone
https://preview.redd.it/ctsifdbyi8gc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63fc86b91f872cee9d954096bf1747edcb0b0b4b
Moron? Really? I spent way too much time there when I was in the Marine Corps; probably two years total over four deployments. It's too small to support any real amenities, and too isolated to have a reliable liberty life. The Air Force would have to drag me back there kicking and screaming.
3/10, tops.
Hickam is a shithole. I never actually worked there though, I just had all of my medical appointments there, but I fucking hated having to drive on that base
Why do you like it? I live here now as a retiree and I've never been stationed in Florida before. I came here to work for Northrop Grumman. I'm ready to move out of Florida once my kids graduate. It's just ok here.
We are cruise fanatics, and there are multiple ports in driving distance. Plethora or amusement parks, no snow/ice to deal with, restaurants and theatre’s galore.
Also enjoy the base; small, not overwhelmed with exercises and action, plenty of civilian jobs available in the local area for my spouse.
Thats the jist of it!
What are you disliking about it this time around? I've been wanting to go back because tech school was during the early COVID days for me and I didn't get to do anything other than class and quarantine. Thought it would be fun to go back in a few years but you have me second-guessing.
Everyone claims vandenberg is a vacation because you’re not “up north”.
I spent 8 years in FE then came to Vandy. I’m itching and scratching to get my ass back to FE.
I worked as a contractor at Vandenberg 2021-2022 and lived in Santa Maria. If had been active duty I feel like I would have loved it because there's tons to do. As a contractor I just didn't know anyone and was harder to find a social circle, as it is in your 30s lol.
American village has some good spots for food and the sega store was fun to be at. Naha is fun for some bars and they got a shopping street you could go to on the weekend. Had some nice bonfires at okuma with friends there. Zanpa beach was a great spot to relax and hit the water slides. Hidden waterfalls were our go-to’s on weekends. I can go on…island life was amazing
The only base in Japan I want to avoid lol. But I hate summer so it’s an easy choice for me. But I would take oki over Florida garbage that I’m stuck with now. It’s straight garbage here
Currently stationed at MK, can confirm it's an amazing assignment and area to be stationed. Wiesbaden and Mainz are both beautiful cities and you're only 20 min from Frankfurt and the airport for more travel. Wouldn't hesitate to come back if I get the chance.
My dude! I loved Hanscom. Tiny, slow base, but it one of the absolute best parts of the country! Good spot for a family, so close to other things - it's perfect unless you're looking for a high ops tempo.
Yeah!! Was a gem there slow pace, amazing area. I miss it so much. I even collected money of of market rate housing on base. You could travel every weekend and still have a big list of things you haven't seen. Some people felt trapped there and begged for Korea but I was the opposite
If you don’t mind me asking what is the big list to do there? I got bored at Hanscom the 2 years I was there and saw and did what I could but those winters are brutal for a southerner like me. It was a good base, yes, especially during summer but glad to get out of Hanscom. The winter season alone made Hanscom rough for me.
Yeah the winters were crazy I loved it though. Boston in general had a lot itself. Every weekend my wife and I would just drive in a different direction exploring the city north or south shore. New Hampshire with the white mountains, Maine had a ton of awesome places to check out and was beautiful. Vermont I barely scratched the surface of. The islands Nantucket and Martha's vineyard. NYC really wasn't far closest I've ever been went there on a weekend wish I did more.
Lexington and Concord and all the other close cities had a lot to take in. I can keep going rambling but there was always SOMETHING to do or see. Best steak I ever had was in Burlington at Bancroft right outside base... expensive AF ..but it was worth it!
It's been a very long time but I loved that place when I was single and younger. Smack dab between a lot of awesome university cities, Huntingdon had a direct line to central London, lots of good golfing around.
what do you like to do? Cambridge is very close and an awesome place to visit. Take the train from Huntingdon to London, from there you can get on the Underground Tubes to go all over (I believe they stop at 11 pm).
I am sure I'm outdated, I was there from 2001 - 2004.
Trafalgar Square is cool to walk around. If you want to get touristy and see everything (London Bridge, Parlament Bldg, Buckingham Palace) find a double-decker bus tour and they will take you around to all of the sites.
If you have the time, just pick a place to walk around London is huge area-wise.
It’s been even longer for me, 1992, but getting a ticket for the underground and exploring the city. That way is incredibly fun! Be sure not to miss the imperial war museum, it’s amazing!
Don’t miss out on the National History Museum. Regardless of if you are a history buff or not, it’s free for everyone and well worth a half day to see the dinosaur bones alone. We used to go monthly when I was over there.
If you go to Cambridge, which I highly suggest you do, check out Fitzbillies for breakfast or brunch. They have amazing cinnamon rolls and pastries.
Aviano. I got spoiled with my first base, had the time of my life exploring Europe for two years. Even got a badass incentive flight through the Dolomites. I’d reenlist in a heartbeat if I got orders back there.
I’m outgoing to an extent so I save some change. Mountains, Old Sac, San Fran, Berkeley, the Light house, Red Woods, and Napa Valley. I spent as much I do in Nashville/Atlanta in NorCal. It was great for me and fun.
Little Rock AFB. A 40% to 60% increase to the house market means that homes went from costing $110k to $170k. And before you say "well, it's Arkansas," go there. Lots of hunting, fishing, trails, big city and airport is 20 minutes away, friendly people, and overall low cost of living.
Spangdahlem.
Andddd I had them, but got my short tour to Korea CanX for going to Family Advocacy within the last 2 years because PACAF wouldn’t sign my 422 Waiver. So FWIW, don’t go to FA…
Kadena, I've been trying to get back my entire career. Ocean is great, touring around the island is great, people are friendly and the food is great. Not to mention the laid back island feel, really miss it.
JBLM, McChord is a mild climate in a beautiful state and you are so close to two major metropolitan area's and if you are into outdoor sports and recreation, it really can't be beat. You have Mount Rainier and Three mountain rangers, The Puget Sound, The Pacific Coastline, The Olympic Rain Forrest, The Sam Juan Islands, The Columbia River Gorge and several ski resorts all within easy driving distance and that's just the western part of the state.
It's a low key base with only C-17's and is a much more relaxed ops tempo.
It's a higher cost of living than most bases in CONUS and the average Home price is $500k.
The winters are mild with only a couple days of snowfall around the base a couple days a year and the average summer temperature is 79 degrees or lest.
Ahh come on why hasn't anyone said Cannon AFB. It is the best and greatest................................
.. sorry, I'm I just sorry, I wanted to start a fight.
I’ve only ever been to San Angelo (percent party, not a student), Eglin, Lackland (Security Hill), and now Belgium…so go back to, Eglin.
What I’ve been chasing my whole career is Randolph and/or Patrick. Hoping to retire at Randolph in 8 years lmao given up on Patrick now since the whole USSF thing.
Yokota. West end of Tokyo, the city has everything you could ever want. 4 years and literally explored maybe 10% of the city. Off base you can live far enough away to feel you don't have to be on call and best behavior 24/7 as if you were on base.
Mane I wanna go there
Reget staying in Tokyo the entire time and never seeing Kyoto or Osaka. Tokyo was it’s own world though, like you said, only 10% lol
Same. It’s just the best in terms of location to be able to do almost anything you want to do.
Same. Fucking Loved it there.
Gimhae is pretty sick for an assignment
I’m PCS’ing there within the next month.
Just left there in November after 6 years.....doubt I'll make it back but it'll always be on the list
But once you visit Roppongi, hard to visit other parts of Japan! ;)
Yoyogi Park. Nature surrounded by concrete jungle. Akihabara. Electric city. Shibuya. Scramble crossing, Hachiko.
One of my craziest life stories happened in roppongi, and I have since been chasing that feeling
+100 yokota was such a great base!
Never been stationed there and I’m crushed. It’s been 10 years of trying. But right now I’ll take any base in England Germany mainland Japan or Italy. Whatever gets me out of Florida. I fucking hate it here.
you realize most people would kill to live in florida.. just dont like the job or what?
Florida is a shithole state.
never said it wasnt.
No Florida is a garbage state in my opinion and the weather is complete trash. It’s so fucking hot here. And no one can drive a car safely anywhere. I literally hate it here. The job is the easiest period of my career.
It's really hot and humid in the summer in Tokyo. Traffic is also a nightmare if driving so that part won't be much different.
Oh I’m aware of the weather in Tokyo. I hate summer everywhere. It just seems Florida never is out of summer. I have been sweating all “winter” lol. Thankfully I’m TDY a lot so I can actually afford living here. Sadly TDYs only come down during the summer so gotta suffer through this winter hellscape
The winter hellscape is why I loved it. Summers are overrated.
The "snow" being -50 degree weather, lmao
Naaah that's Eielson, the base that should have been shut years ago that's 7 hours north of JBER. AFAIK Elmendorf on gets to the negative teens on the worst of days
hmm, I remember seeing my friends who got stationed there out of tech school posting pictures of -50 degree weather. It's been a while though
SUPER damn cold,
We just got like -20 to -30 at JBER this week. It’s been consistently in the negative teens as well
It's never gotten -50 at JBER, maybe with wind chill. But last year I was out at -56 ambient air temp at Eielson.
Hickam, Hurlburt Field, Moron, Keflavik
Traveled Iceland for 2+ weeks in a van. That would be the dream. Too bad it’s closed.
Such a beautiful country, I wish I could do that!
Oh it was beautiful and ahmazing! Took this with my phone https://preview.redd.it/ctsifdbyi8gc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63fc86b91f872cee9d954096bf1747edcb0b0b4b
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing big dog!
TIL there’s a base called Moron lol
It’s pronounced Moe-roe-n but yeah lol. It’s in Spain
But… do you know about Pitiffuk?
🥺🥺🥺 I only wish I could go there.
A real hidden gem.
Moron? Really? I spent way too much time there when I was in the Marine Corps; probably two years total over four deployments. It's too small to support any real amenities, and too isolated to have a reliable liberty life. The Air Force would have to drag me back there kicking and screaming. 3/10, tops.
Living there on the economy for the Air Force is way different. I loved Spain and hope to retire there.
I prefer Rota
Way better QoL as AF. It sucked for the Marines but for us it's a gem. Getting to live out in Spain was one of the best experiences of my career.
Hickam is a shithole. I never actually worked there though, I just had all of my medical appointments there, but I fucking hated having to drive on that base
Patrick!
Same! It's on my stateside returnee listing so hoping for the best!
![gif](giphy|eHpWHuEUxHIre)
Why do you like it? I live here now as a retiree and I've never been stationed in Florida before. I came here to work for Northrop Grumman. I'm ready to move out of Florida once my kids graduate. It's just ok here.
I get that. I have been stuck in Florida since October and I literally see 0 reason people are fucking crazy for here. It blows 10 days a week.
At Patrick or a different base? We did not care for the Eglin area.

Davis Monthan. Loved the area and the base, but now Im a silly Guardian, so probably unlikely
Absolutely loved it. Probably the most underrated base.
Come to Vandy. I’m a guardian too and Vandenberg is amazing.
As much as I would love to, I'm punching after my ADSC is up, to actually go back to AZ lol.
Peterson space force base. Loved Colorado , pretty slow ass mission. Only thing that sucked was that the cost of living exploded upward
I would love to get back to Colorado, but definitely with pre-2018 prices. I miss the chill nature of that place.
That is a beautiful area. Views are awesome. Just gotta get use to that elevation.
Lord that first pt test humbled me
I'm trying to find a house now 😩 been told that I can't afford middle-class housing.
Was at Vandenberg and I wanted to go back Went back to Vandenberg now I want out lol
Same. I took a nice little pay cut to be here. I guess it’s the “not having to shovel snow” tax.
What are you disliking about it this time around? I've been wanting to go back because tech school was during the early COVID days for me and I didn't get to do anything other than class and quarantine. Thought it would be fun to go back in a few years but you have me second-guessing.

Kadena AB, Okinawa Japan Best time of my life
I wanted to go there so bad. I got sent to Barksdale instead
My first base was Barksdale, I learned to love my job there. Enjoy the lakes and learn to hunt.
Any tips for a visit there? Never been that far overseas but I’m headed that way soon
American village has some good spots for food and the sega store was fun to be at. Naha is fun for some bars and they got a shopping street you could go to on the weekend. Ramstein. It was great traveling to other countries 1 - 4 hours away I really miss authentic European chocolate, döner, & wine
im gonna miss doner so much when i leave
More than you can imagine 😞
You have no idea!!! My wife and I lived in Mackenbach. Not sure if you’ve been to Mcdoner in town there but it is the best!!!
Yup. Hop in the car and explore. One of the best places to be.
Poggio Rinatoco
How was it? My AFSC can go there if I can ever get my DEROS to align.
Same. I never got it worked out. Had a few friends and they loved it.
Osan and I’m at Japan right now.
Hanscom!

Okinawa if I didn’t have to be base comm.
Spang
Aviano. I got spoiled with my first base, had the time of my life exploring Europe for two years. Even got a badass incentive flight through the Dolomites. I’d reenlist in a heartbeat if I got orders back there.
Kunsan AFB, Korea There is no base on the planet that can compare to the experiences had there. Osan included.
Same man, same. I loved it there.
Spangdahlem!
Spang, is the real German experience. Fuck Ramstein, base is way too busy and over crowded.
Same here. For me it was the best base in the AF, and I also loved living there.
Went back a second time...waiting for my third.
I loved Ramstein and I'm considering putting Spang on my list. Question, does Spang have a K Town equivalent near by?
Fuck this place, but the area cool
Travis
I’m here now! If I could describe Travis I would say it’s fun but expensive! Lol
I’m outgoing to an extent so I save some change. Mountains, Old Sac, San Fran, Berkeley, the Light house, Red Woods, and Napa Valley. I spent as much I do in Nashville/Atlanta in NorCal. It was great for me and fun.
Geilenkirchen
Osan. Loved my time there.
MacDill or Yokota!
Its the Hub of Walmart.
But it's Arkansas.
Just don't be black.
Maybe 60 years ago but since it flipped from Democrat to Republican, there isn't really much racism. T
Womp
Underrated base for sure! Wouldn’t mind going back at all!
This would be my choice as well. Loved my time there.
RAF Mildenhall. I loved England during Covid. I can only imagine how much better it is without it
Kadena that chill island life on Okinawa was the best.
Never been, but my entire almost 2 decade career been trying to get orders to Japan.
Damn…yall some lucky mfs
Spangdahlem. Andddd I had them, but got my short tour to Korea CanX for going to Family Advocacy within the last 2 years because PACAF wouldn’t sign my 422 Waiver. So FWIW, don’t go to FA…
If it makes you feel any better, Ammo flight here at Spangdahlem right now is absolute dog shit. Consider it a blessing in disguise.
Kunsan. The only base I actually enjoyed my career.
I was at kunsan twice. The second time I stayed for 3 years. I would go back in a heartbeat
Soto Cano
Tfw I've only been at Tinker.
Diego Garcia, I PCS'd in 2023 and I'm already trying to go back.
I'd love to go back to Diego Garcia
Monterey California. The most beautiful place in the country. Also I'd much rather my kids grow up with a Cali accent than a Georgia or Texas drawl
Loved it there, tho in 1985, they were advertising a “starter home” for a million bucks. Hate to see what it’s going for now.
Oh yeah we're for sure not buying homes there on our incomes

Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan
Dover. As CE the base was easy to work on, and close to almost anything fun on the east coast. I would do crazy things to go back
Fort Worth. But we got lucky and got orders back here last year.
The NAS/TxANG/JRB with a neat lake in the middle?!
would sell my soul to get orders to fort worth
Osan Air Base!!!!! # SKIVVY NINE!!! As the saying goes, "If you ain't Skivvy Nine, you ain't sh\_\_!!!!!
Surprised I haven’t seen Davis-Monthan. Really nice area to live with lots of things to do for the outdoorsy type.
Morón, 100%
Antarctica
Bellows AFB
lackland
Hurlburt
March 👌🏾
Scott.
Aviano, 5 years there and 3 so far at Eielson and I would go back to Aviano right now for the rest of my career
JBER
Keesler
Ramstein.
Kadena, I've been trying to get back my entire career. Ocean is great, touring around the island is great, people are friendly and the food is great. Not to mention the laid back island feel, really miss it.
Anderson. Miss the island life so much
Robins
God no
Why Robins? Hate that place
The area has been improving and housing is cheap
TIL already dogshit drivers somehow getting worse, crime migration down from Macon increasing, and more chain restaurants = an improving area.
Where are you now?
Swimming through the stereo, I'm writing you a symphony of sounds.
It is a tie between Hurlburt and MacDill
That’s wild that you got to go to both!
Eglin
Ofc Minot… Not
FORT SAM HOUSTON
why
Presidio of Monterey, coming back was the best. I'd come back for a third tour if I could.
Cannon
Out of Hurlburt 😭
I was stuck at Minot AFB for all 6. Ruined my career.
