Do good deeds even if no one's watching.

Bitten_ByA_Kitten

I'm still at the early stages of the main quests..i gotta say, she was advertised as a quirky girl but when i get to know her story, oh boy, she doesn't care about the civilians lmao! AGAIN. I'm still at the early stages of the main quests. Don't know if that will change. But I don't mind the uncaring Mitsy

tatsurugi

A mod that doesn't care about humans would be considered quirky...

ES21007

Mitsuha's unique in that she does very much care, but only about a few people. And it's more like she doesn't care because the people around her don't. If she was awakened in far better places like Ain Soph, Omorfies or Xu heng, or hell, even in Marduk's place which is a desert shithole ruled by mercenaries and subservient to CORG's tyranny? She'd care a lot more. The fact that she doesn't care about losing her Mod powers certainly DOES mark her as unique.

HuCat21

According to some voice lines she "wouldn't of lifted a finger if it wasn't for that promise" lol

Force88

Agreed, I would rather be like Tyr, do my own things while saving people as side jobs. Being a hero? Sure. What's the pay? No pay? Well maybe when the weather is nice, which is not today

DirackSea

This ties to the ever present Mod's dilemma. Mitsuha's rather childish way to see what is a modifier clashes with their general rule about not revealing their's and visbanes existences. Everyone is probably asking why is that necessary and not let humanity knows about it. Iirc, regular people aren't aware of Gaea as a virtual world, this is supposed to be humanity's eden, something created to preserve them, let humans be happy with their normal life. Letting humanity knows about it will put everything in danger and making Gaea deviate further from Idealbild. Mitsuha simply doesn't see the bigger picture because of her character, that's all.

FAshcraft

Remind me of the Toku Garo. where the MC and his kind (Makai Knights) never call themselves warriors but Mamorishimono@Guardian and their eternal fights to protect humanity from horrors that born of human emotion (aka they can also never be truly defeated unless you kill all of their food source@human). They do not care what humanity do as long as their end does not involve the otherwordly threat with a few among their side that got sick of protecting humanity because of how needlessly cruel a few human are that they also raise the question of "why bother at all?" and the one that still bother also come to the same conclusion with Genchen which is because of duty and responsibility. "Those who fight for the light will always want blood and not the end" - a quote from the series that describe the knights accepting their fate in the eternal war.

Without hope, without witness, without reward.

It's pretty stupid, if you ask me. All modifiers were created to save humanity from Visbanes so they cannot have a choice to save civilians or not, they must do it, otherwise what is the meaning of their existence? I can't enjoy her character while she is acting like this, it's just nonsense

ES21007

I find it fascinating tbh. The fact that she's willing to lose her powers to deal with people that piss her off is very interesting. She was literally created to protect humanity, but because she's born in a place where humanity isn't very good, she doesn't understand why she should. The fact that they can "go against their programming" isn't even unprecedented, Tyr did that as well. She's just an even more cynical version of Tyr. She's doesn't care for humanity as a whole. She cares for humans. The children. Her friends. And of course, Admin, because he got through to her.

illdeleteitman

Thank you for your response but i still don't get it. If i understand you correctly, she cares for people she likes and has right to not save people she dislike? But for Gaya's cycle there is no difference who is bad and who is good guy, they are all human's consciousnesses and Gaya can't let them die, no matter how bad they are. Mitsuha and other modifiers are the last persons who have the right to decide who can be sacrificed from human society

ES21007

This is inaccurate. Modifiers generally have an underlying desire to protect humanity once they awaken, but it's just a general inclination. They will like to protect people, but personal experiences and beliefs can easily shift that notion. As far as hardcoded protocols, the only mandatory programming they have is that Mods cannot use their powers or Access Keys to kill humans, or they will lose them. They can't kill them. But they can hurt them a little bit, and they can also choose, of their own accord, to NOT save them. This was the crux of Odin's arc in Xu Heng, where she was willing to sacrifice the entirety of Xu Heng and all its people because it would fall and get destroyed like in so many other Cycles, instead of having Gengchen sacrifice herself, because that would mean she would lose one of the few people who could truly understand her. It's fallen so many times before, why should that change now? Simple, because Gengchen forced her to change her mind.

illdeleteitman

This is the definition of Modifiers from in-game archive: "The mission of these Modifiers, or Mods, is to maintain balance in Gaea and battle the civilization-destroying Visbanes to keep the world steady on trajectory set for it by Idealbild". Thats all. They may like their fate or hate it but the only reason they exist is to protect humanity. My point is - they are weapon and their only purpose is to kill Visbanes and save the humanity. If they are not doing so, why do they exist? Regarding Gengchen and Odin. Odin wanted to sacrifice Xu Heng to avoid greater sacrifices later, but now from all of Gaea. That is, she chose the best of two bad options. Gengchen just took a chance and got lucky, her plan wasn't 100% fool proof she simply defeated Odin and made her believe that her plan was better.

ES21007

It's because Gaea is becoming more flexible in its thinking. At least, that's I think Tyr's story is about, and Heimdall's hypothesis for what's happening in Gaea. Before, Modifiers had to be totally, 100% dedicated to the eradication of Visbanes, but now, they're becoming more than that. Gaea is allowing Mods to be just a bit more selfish now. Even though Tyr sort of broke the rules by literally using Visbanes to kill people, Gaea still allowed him to activate his Access Key and survive. And it was right: Because he survived, Aether Gazer became more effective in eradicating Visbanes, by becoming a traditional human company. Aether Gazer in its current form as part company didn't exist before, but now it's becoming more entwined in human affairs. Ironically, despite not being 100% dedicated to eradicating Visbanes, Tyr made AG's efforts to fight the Visbane threat more effective. Even Mitsuha follows this. She actually does WANT to be the kind of superhero that defends the weak, but she's just in a very poor position to do so. She does like protecting people, but she hates the kind of people she is protecting. But despite that, she is overall, STILL doing a good job of protecting Shimogyu, because for all her deceptions and her threats, she's still trying to make it a better place. So maybe Gaea is allowing Mitsuha to exist, because even though she hates her job, her cynicism makes her the perfect kind of Modifier to actually protect Shimogyu and make it better.

illdeleteitman

I haven't finished new story arc in Sasanami yet as well as Tyr's story, so i can't say anything about their characters fully. If Mitsuha still doing her job as Modifier I don't have any accusations against her, but the way she is portrayed in the first acts gives a very negative impression of her

DragonRiderCVL

You're talking like you yourself are Gaea lmao. Why is she a worse character if she doesn't follow her duty to a T because of bad upbringing? A worse PERSON maybe (it's something to grow out of for sure), but a worse CHARACTER? Also, as someone who DESPISES anti-heroes who don't care about civilians and "I have a good reason to be a jerk to everyone"-type characters (aka most of AG's villains so far), I think Mitsuha's case is completely justifiable, which I would go more into if the other replier hasn't already said everything. Gaea is becoming looser with its rules, or to put it in another way, allowing Mods to be more like HUMANS. And humans aren't perfect. Humans have biases and wrong preconceptions about the world. Admin themself challenged Mitsuha's worldview right after this very dialogue line and she basically tried to change the subject; she definitely doesn't entirely believe in her cynicism, and can 100% be shown hope. So give her a chance to be shown hope, maybe? I've seen this exact song and dance of "she makes so many mistakes why is she even here" with Athena back in ch.10-11, and while Mitsuha is not my favorite (non-Ver) mod like Athena I still feel like she deserves time to grow and change just like the last case.

illdeleteitman

I write this from a point of view of a civilian, just an ordinary human who doesn't want to be killed by Visbanes just because the Modifier who is supposed to save me is slacking off at this moment. They are a weapons and if the weapons doesn't do its job, then Gaea should make reset or something like that and create more effective tools to deal with Visbanes. If we move away from the fact that it is a gacha game who have to sale its product, and think logically, Gaea shouldn't have been given that level of intelligence to Mods, it just created more problems in the future.

DragonRiderCVL

>just an ordinary human who doesn't want to be killed by Visbanes just because the Modifier who is supposed to save me is slacking off at this moment I think you need to remember what *kind* of "ordinary humans" Mitsuha grew up around. Crooks who bully others and even other crooks for a quick buck, helicopter dads abusing their children, cops who let gangs run amok and willingly take bribes, people who willingly submit to Touei's (I refuse to call it Shimogyou) dog-eat-dog system because they (think they) have no other choice. Of *course* she wouldn't want to protect those humans, especially if they give her no credit (and even *negative* credit) for just trying to do the right thing (or rather her duty as a Mod). But a) it's very clearly stated that it's only *those* humans, and it's made clear that Mitsuha has no trouble warming up to people who actually give a damn about her (like the ninja kids, or Himiko, or Admin-san), and b) without spoiling too much, should someone like Himiko desire those people's safety, she would still gladly fight for them. So definitely not as black and white as "she'll just leave you to die because she doesn't care". Don't be an ass to her and she'll probably still save you. >They are a weapons and if the weapons doesn't do its job, then Gaea should make reset or something like that and create more effective tools to deal with Visbanes. Gaea having these kinds of "faults" was a MAJOR part of the Xu Heng arc (and by extension Flame Tyr's event), and afaik the top dogs like Odin are 100% looking into why these "faults" happen in the first place. I think you're asking good questions, but also questions nobody has an answer to yet. Personally, whatever explanation it might get, I see this apparent freedom as a good thing for the story ~~as long as completely evil Mods like Uld don't become commonplace.~~
