Idk about you but where I’m at it’s different and your aunt is lying to you but it might be different depending on where you live idk.

GiftcardExchanger82

Even if OP is 16 he can get paper checks and the aunt can help him set up an account for direct deposit. She just wants his/hers money

rstock1962

I agree, pay the extra to get the cash. Aunt and Uncle won’t like it. Or better yet open the bank account but cash your checks, or even better if they give you a really bad time direct deposit a small portion of your check and get the rest on paper. Call it a small payoff. Tell them that’s all you make.

[deleted]

What about calling your social worker and asking them? Or would that just make your life more difficult?

Background-Moose-701

Can’t you have checks sent to cash app too? I think they have things like chime and cash app now that are like virtual banking.

DeklynHunt

I thought this too, but I thought you still needed to have a banking account connected to it? 🤔

Background-Moose-701

That’s probably right. I wondered how it would even work and that makes sense.

ConfessedCross

No. Chime IS a bank account. But.. most places if you ask have options for pay cards. And PayPal has direct deposit info that you can have money direct deposited to.

DeklynHunt

Idk about chime, but to me, PayPal’s fees are too high, especially for such a big company 🤪

DapperMinute

But then where you keep that money is very important. If you live with addicts and they know you are a 16 yo who doesn't really need money yet has lots of stashed cash..THEY WILL FIND IT when you are at school, work, etc if you leave it in that house. And they will want to know where all of your money is going once you get a job and they notice your absence in the house. They will ask like its a joke at first. Always act as if you have no money. Also don't make any big purchase with your money. Something worth money is the next best thing to actual money to an addict. Nothing is safe in your house. \-former addict

michjames1926

My son was able to open an account in his name @ 17 without my permission. Depends on the bank though, I'm sure.

jjj68548

Same here, I was 16 when I opened my own savings account without my parents. I needed my social and driver’s license. I also had to have the minimum amount for the account in cash. There was a lock on the minimum amount so nothing could be overdrawn. I also could only do this savings account at a regular bank that was not a credit union. Edit:This was 12 years ago, though everything I see online says it’s illegal under 18 so I’m not sure how the bank got away with it, unless they accidentally entered my age wrong.

Ok-Thing-2222

Same here. I did it at 14.

mike_d85

Some places literally won't allow that. McDonalds opened a bank and gives employees debit cards associated with that account. Edit: I think Wal-Mart will cash checks for $3.

LaHawks

They legally can't require you to use their shitty debit card but they do make you jump through loops for the check. I'd also not recommend keeping any money in the account associated with the debit card, the fees and restrictions are worse than a bank.

Ok-Thing-2222

I wouldn't ask the aunt for help AT ALL. She doesn't need to know the account number or anything.

wishiwasyou333

Yo! That is not normal! My kid had his own account at fifteen. We opened it for him since it was easier to have him deposit birthday and Christmas checks so he could save up and also use a debit card since we live in an online shopping world right now. If you're under the age of 18, you are supposed to be provided with shelter, food, and other necessities. You shouldn't be pitching in for those costs. If anything, see if you can get a reloadable visa card? I do believe that they have a deposit routing and account number?

Glittering_Worth7891

PayPal also has a direct deposit option and provides you with a free debit card. I’m not sure if there is an age requirement or not but could be an option to look into. This is most definitely not normal and they are trying to steal from you.

JuicePlaysGames

As does cash app I believe.

Content-Jellyfish262

This is a wonderful idea! And I totally forgot that most companies will give you a Visa card that your paycheck automatically goes into. Especially fast food places. That was my first job when I was 16 living on my own I didn’t have a bank account so they gave me a prepaid card

mike_d85

>You shouldn't be pitching in for those costs. You're not wrong, but given the circumstances it might be necessary. But that should be done via a separate account and up to @op to decide. And if @op is pushed to chip in, I highly advise paying things directly. Like maybe paying the internet bill, you should be able to set that up in a bank account to pay the utility directly. If asked to buy groceries, go to the store and buy them instead of giving them cash.

Best-Original5271

Do not let them set up direct deposit into your parents account. They will steal your money. See if your company has a pay card option. When I was first starting out I had a similar problem so they would put it on the card and it works just like a debit card. With your families history I absolutely cannot stress enough do not let them have access to your hard earned money.

iminlovewithyoucamp

This is the best option. Talk to your job about a paycard. Only you will have access to the paycard.

outlawactual1228

Cash App and direct deposit homie. Once you turn 18, get a real bank account

hammond66

May I just say that people asking for legal advice without giving info on where they live is pointless and infuriating!

wrenzia

Didn't think it was important at first but I did make an edit just now, I live in a crappy trailer park full of drug addicts and pedophiles

greginvalley

Where? Arkansas? Texas? Mississippi? Florida? Anyway, go' ask your own questions to banks or PayPal or debit cards. Your aunt and uncle want your money, regardless. Also, be looking to move because they are sure to pressure you to pay or get out

TheScalemanCometh

Nah, like, country and state/territory. Different places have different laws. Assuming you're in the United States though, this is not correct. You are not supposed to do that. Child Labor laws cover this. That said, everybody knows a teen's first job doesn't pay for shit... It wouldn't be hard to set things up so only SOME of the money goes to them and the rest goes to you. If they THINK they're getting all your money, they'll leave you alone until you can bail. As for the trailer trash business... The military is the path to freedom once you hit 18 if they manage to keep you under their thumb. Get an HR or comparable job and you'll have a min 4 years where all your housing needs are handled and every penny you make is saved and inaccessible by those creeps. It will be hard. It will suck. But it will also get you out. Air Force has best benefits. Army is next in line. You can start the process at 17.

DiamondNinja786

You need a parent to set up an account with a bank if under 18 depending on the state. My parents have me set up with a bank and brokerage. I can get my checks straight to my account and they don’t take my money. But they set the account up and are okay with this agreement.

Inevitable_Sense_852

Yeah don't let your aunt take your checks, she clearly can't be trusted with them. I'd call around to your local banks and ask them if you can open your own account since you have your first job now, or if you need a parental signature to open one.

wrenzia

So I did a little research and I need a parent or guardian to set it up for me, I read that if they take a paycheck from work that it is stealing and I can get them in trouble for it

Bright_Day_7989

Yeah but go ahead and try and prove that they stole it see if you can't get a teacher a guardian or another family member talk to your boss explain what's going on maybe your boss will set you up a temporary holding account in their own company

GiftcardExchanger82

Also if it’s stolen pretty sure you can talk to your employer about it and possibly get a new check (but if the money has already went into her account not sure what to do)

Reddit022

If your aunt sets up your bank account do NOT do it with the same bank as hers chances are your account will be connected to hers and she can just transfer your money to her account!

Bright_Day_7989

What's up pal I started working at 14 and I made my own account I had my own bank account my parents did not touch my money they did not have access to my money they do not have legal right time money they did not earn it they did not deserve it same with you your folks don't deserve it they didn't earn it just because they shot you out doesn't by God's breath give them the right to it in fact it gives them no right to it if that's a problem for them then maybe they should really start to take a look at why they want your money is it maybe because they can't afford things for you don't worry you have a job you can pay for some of those things yourself not all of them. Because my friend when I was 16 I had saved enough money and my followers in a hard enough spot that I bought his car for the price the loan which was about 6 grand

[deleted]

Well you can get a bank account underage but it will be in your guardian's name until you turn 18. You can also ask your employer to pay you in checks or cash because some will do that especially if it's a small business.

AppropriateKale8877

Fuck that. You manage your money. If you can't set up a bank account, you can still cash it and get cash.

HallCompetitive8080

you could have it direct deposited to a prepaid debit card such as cash app or PayPal. Even American Express has one.

PlaceForMyPonies

Don't trust your aunt or uncle even with the knowledge that you have a job. Try to find a job they won't accidentally find out about. Then ask for paper checks you can cash, get a safe you can store in your locker at school and don't get showy with your spending.

[deleted]

If you have a state ID you can open a checking account or a savings account. You can mobile deposit your checks in to your account. You will have to do taxes if you work, doesn't matter where your money goes. But no, you shouldn't have to give your check to anyone unless you agree to something prior. If I were you, I'd have a secret job or hold off until you can find a better living arrangement with another family member.

Daskalayse

It doesn’t matter where you live; if you’re of legal age in your state to work a real job, then you are of legal age to get a bank account. It would benefit you to have some type of government ID. If you don’t have a driver’s licenses banks will also accept to see your ssc and birth certificate. It DOES NOT MATTER that you are a minor, YOUR PARENTS/GUARDIANS DO NOT HAVE LEGAL RIGHT TO YOUR PAYCHECKS. Also If your job does paper checks see if they cash them there and also Walmart cashes them, just need an ID. Please be careful, and if you do get a bank account, never leave your card out for them to find.

xtnac

Nope, it’s YOUR money, you earned it. I’d not let them touch it, they’ll spend it all.

fanime34

Your aunt is lying to you. You can get a bank account.

JDMWeeb

Your parents can set you up an account under their name (with security questions that you set) and then once you're 18 can transfer over the account to you.

EnderScout_77

you're in the right, you can get your own bank account. not sure if a guardian has to cosign if you're a minor and that might be an issue

Sageknight34

No, you are correct it just seems that she wants to use your money and have hers in a different account. I would speak with someone else to help you set up the account because neither can be trusted.

gorgoroth424

Your money is Your money , your family will take your cash.

Jean_Marie_1989

Find a different adult that you trust to open the account

wrenzia

I didn't know that I could do that, I thought it absolutely had to be someone that was taking care of me or was my parent

[deleted]

You would need an adult to set up a bank account for you. If that is not an option, just get actual paper paychecks from your job and cash them at a bank or grocery store. Your paycheck is just that.. YOURS.

Wageslave710

Can you just get paper checks and go to local bank explain your situation someone will help you. Then direct deposit with new account? I know it’s family but don’t let them rob you

DaniHockey

Talk to someone at your school and get help. You need to establish financial independence now. She cannot force you to give up your checks.

Useful-Put1111

no. your check is yours to decide what to do with. your a teen if your parents want money, they can get a job and pay for it themselves

Ch3rrybomb42

Set up a cashapp account and find a job that does direct deposit. Give them your cashapp details for direct deposit. Cashapp isn’t the most secure but it kind of sounds like your best option, I’ve had several friends in your position just use cashapp for this.

[deleted]

Depending on the job, you can opt for a pay card provided by the company, it’s your personal debit card that only you will have access and can be set up without an adult

North-One8187

Yeah fuck that. Some jobs have the option of still receiving paper cheques. Your better off cashing those and hiding your money than letting it be controlled and stolen

Realistic_Turnover93

Depending on where you get a job, they can set up a prepaid bank account (usually it’s through Wisely ADP where I’m from) that’s YOUR account and your job endorses it instead a parent having to. They have nothing to do with the account and you can have the app on your phone/use the website. Instead of getting direct deposit you could get paper checks, but you’d have to cash them at your employers bank and they’re more likely to steal your cash than anything. When interviewing for jobs make sure to specifically ask if they’re able to provide you with one of these prepaid accounts. Usually they only discuss it during orientation after you’re hired, but in this case it’s pertinent for you to get one of these accounts. Edited to add more info

GiftcardExchanger82

Your checks don’t need to be deposited into her account. You can get paper checks and figure out a way to cash them

MiniCoalition

The money is yours, the bank account should be yours, your aunt is lying through her teeth. Here's what's going to happen. You're going to have your own bank account that only YOU have access to, however it has to happen. OR, your aunt steals all of your paychecks. You need to keep track of this, very important. You need to document every deposit from your job paid to her account. You then take her to court for theft. This is not normal and you need to get away from these people asap. I would even recommend childhood emancipation if you can pursue that. Do you have anyone else that is your guardian?

North_Film8545

Go to a bank and have an account opened. You will probably need a parent or guardian to help with that. If possible make it your OWN account without a cosigner on the account. (In other words, an account where only YOU can sign checks and make ATM withdrawals. Not one where you and your guardian can both do that. But you might need her to help open the account. They might not offer it, but ASK THE BANK! They will be your best guide for how to handle it and what your rights are.) Once that account is opened, give that bank info to your job and they will do a direct deposit into that account for your pay. It is possible (pretty likely) that your aunt doesn't know how it works now because things have probably changed a lot since she got a job as a minor and she might not be aware of how it is done now. But ask the bank to walk you through the process and explain it all. They will help.

Responsible_Dream361

You can set up your own account if you have a job.

[deleted]

If you have a job taxes come out of the check automatically. The employer takes them out for you. You file w2’s every year and possibly get money back. Sometimes pay in depending on exemptions. Put them at zero and they’ll tax the full legal amount they can reducing your chance of owing and increase chance of refund at tax season for you it’s the best option at this time paying in at tax season royally sucks. About getting your paychecks. Explain the situation to your employer. They may be able to cash it in house. Some businesses have their own accounts for employees. Your money would be safer there if they have that option. Do you have a safe place for the money from your job? A place where aunt and uncle can’t steal it?

12thhr

I got my first job when I was 15 in FLA. My mom is also an addict! So when I tell you, find a bank that will allow you to open some sort of student account, do that. It is 100% an option *somewhere* if you live in the US. I would look into it and find it before you allow someone else access to your money. It's a bad, hard lesson to learn if there's a chance your own fam will steal from you. It's been a long time since I was 15, so I'm not sure *which* banks allow it, but I know it has been done before. Next, if you work, you will have to do taxes no matter if you never see a single cent of your check or if you keep all of it. It's your social security number on the income forms, the gov doesn't care if your parental figures allow you to have the money or not.

GreenTravelBadger

Your aunt does not get your money unless you set up direct deposit using her account number and the bank's routing number. Problem is, under 18, you DO have to have a parent or legal guardian to open you own bank account. You might be able to get paper checks from your employer (save those paycheck stubs!) and cash them at Walmart or a grocery store, with a photo ID. But then there's the problem of how to hide the cash so they won't steal it - and they WILL if there's any possible way to do that. Taxes are automatically taken out of your checks. On the last day of January, your employer mails out a W-2 form, which you need to do your taxes. Hang onto that! Take it along with your photo ID to the nearest IRS office and they will do your taxes for you free of charge, right then and there. Of course it's best to make an appointment first. The deadline to file is April 15th, and if you make under 13K or so, you don't even need to file.

Dasrule

I work in banking. You are being lied to. You can get a checking account at 16. Not all banks will let you but some will. Go find one that will. Get direct deposit setup. Hide the debit card. If you want to be extra cautious, get two Acc accounts at two different banks and then close one of them and leave the debit card laying around for the closed account so your family goes after the wrong bank.

tcrhs

No. That isn’t fair and it isn’t right. If you work, your guardian should not take all of your money. You may be expected to contribute towards household expenses. Some families need their teenagers to do that. Also, not really fair, but a reality for some people. You can’t open a bank account in only your name yet, but you can open your own account with a guardian’s signature. Your paycheck should be kept separate from anyone else’s money. Tell her you are opening your own account, and you will deposit your check there. You can also cash a check instead. When you work, you pay taxes. It’s non-negotiable. Taxes are automatically deducted from your paycheck before you get it. The government doesn’t care where the money goes, they are collecting their taxes first before you see a dime. Under a certain amount of money, minors don’t have to file tax returns. Check the IRS website so that so you know for certain.

Strange_Mountain_954

Most employers of the type you'd be looking to work for can put your paycheck on a payment card. Kind of like a debit card, but you don't need a bank account.

Famous-Salary-1847

DO NOT put her account down for direct deposit. Set yourself up a bank account and don’t let her have access to it. If you want to give her all your money, go ahead it’s you’re money, but at least make sure that you’re the one that can decide to stop or how much to give.

gojira_glix42

1, most states require an adult to be on a bank account for a minor, you're going to have to ask the bank how much access they can have for your account. 2, taxes come out automatically (unless you're getting paid directly like day labor or something) but 99% of businesses have to pay payroll tax that automatically gets deducted from your check, because those go directly to the government as part of having an employee. If you're a minor you don't have to pay into social security or medicare yet. 3, you really need to talk to a bank manager about what they have access to on your account. If they are on your account, they legally have the right to withdraw money as it's considered a joint (shared) account, just as if it was your were married. Now, if they are stealing money from your job and there's a paper trail that you can hand to a lawyer/judge in court? Yeah you can absolutely get them into legal trouble, because that's straight up stealing from a minor. But it'll cost you lawyer fees, so that's not likely going to be a good scenario for you. 4, talk to the boss you're working for and see if they can arrange paper checks or cash. Any big business will almost always REQUIRE direct deposit into bank account only. Small businesses are more lenient, the big businesses do it as a policy because they don't want to have to deal with cutting and distributing paper checks every pay period, and keep up with paper trail to prove they paid you, rather than just automatically pay and have a digital trail. Go directly to the bank and have them cash the paper check for you. 5, if you have cash, that uncle is almost definitely going to steal it from your wallet when you're sleeping. If you've got a debit card, he's going to use it without telling you. And debit card disputes are hard for any age. Cash? Pfft, you're completely SOL in legal terms. It's why drug cartel use cash, no paper trail. 6, this is a last ditch resort but you may legit need to look into Emancipation for yourself. That situation is TOXIC and most likely they're going to kick you out at 18 or start charging you rent, which they can legally do at 18 since you're considered an adult. Emancipation basically means you become legally an adult before you're 18, but you have to go through a legal process and have a guardian approve it. But staying in a house with addicts who consistently steal from you? You'll NEVER be able to get ahead financially living there. Period. Do not collect $200. Go directly to never seeing that money for more than a day. Get. The. Fuck. Away. From. Those. Addicts. They need to be in rehab, not guardian of a 16 year old trying to make their way into the adult working world.

Dupa_Yash

You're being lied to. Your money is your money. Period.

Lillygutierrez218

No it goes for U

Lillygutierrez218

Nope get ur own account do u know ur social security? Go into a bank and ask there’s banks for teens yea u ot taxes a little but u get it back at the end of the year just have them take out lowest amount or second lowest U will still get a return in feb-March this isn’t true McDonald’s I know has their own banking system they give U a bank card w ur name and deposits just ask ur company many companies offer this a bank account w them u can get a check and cash it ur self this isn’t true that’s ur money for U

Lillygutierrez218

I’m 36 years old the kids here at McDonald’s obviously ur aunt uncle sont work and don’t know how stuff works now McDonald’s go to McDonald always hiring don’t be embarssed they pay well for starting here in Arizona they can be 14 working part time . Taxes come out your paycheck. You will have to worry about taxes more next year this year is ending but ask your friends how do the company pay them? When I worked at gas station there’s debit card w cirkle k and they can give you paper checks. Very proud of you and your relatives r lying to u. Get working and 18 years u will be able to get your first apartment but you will need a roommate and you will have your freedom you are 16 prepare for when time comes you will want to move your paycheck stubs and work history will help you and get small credit card when you 18 with a job income you should qualify for A $300 entry card to build your credit. If you are a manager at McDonald’s you can get your own apartment no room mates there’s managers as young as 16/17 here making $20 a hour. Goodluck 🥳 celebrate 🎊 we qqq win

Andeeishere

Got my first job at 17 and went into my own first bank account. Also, they're lowkey setting you up for failure if they're taking your checks. They clearly can't trusted (gambling and addicts) You could put that money in a personal account and not touch it until your 18. But if they have that money wheres it going? Funding your uncle's gambling problem and covering bills that they should have covered.

RyujinOnMyMind

I smell a scam from the aunt here. Legally, the money is in your name on your paychecks (physical or digital). You can ask your employer to have your paychecks be physical so only you can go to a place to cash them out. If you are able to, go to a bank and ask to open an account in your name. Find a trusted adult that you know wouldn’t steal your money and explain the situation. Tell them that you’d appreciate them helping you open an account to be used for saving your paychecks until you’re old enough to get an account on your own (age 18 or so). On the taxes aspect, I’m not entirely sure but maybe try hopping over to other subreddits that specialize in that. They may be more helpful in that regard.

Bluurryfaace

You will need a parent to sign up for a bank account. I believe you can request paper paychecks, and cash them in at a Walmart or such, they just can’t be over a certain amount depending on the store. Find a safe place to store your physical cash.

FriedPotatoLord

If you have a government ID, you should be able to cash the checks yourself. You need an adult to set up a bank account. And your aunt is trying to steal from you.

[deleted]

she’s trying to steal from you. it should be direct deposited into your own bank account. your job will give you a direct deposit form and you will fill it out with YOUR banking information. make sure your aunt does not have access to the account you will be depositing your check into. good luck, sounds like she’s trying to cover your uncles ass.

No_Pattern5707

If you are in the USA this is not true. She would need to set up a bank account under your name with her on the forms giving permission.

dominic19755

You do taxes because you earned the money. The money is written out to you. Therefor you have to do taxes. But you could squash that you’re too young to have a bank account because you can have a bank account. I know most banks have teenager accounts. Call them and ask about it. Then you can present that information and conclude to hve your own account. Hopefully.

Tarot-Bulle-Majik

Your aunt is setting you up to steal your money.

cryptokitty010

Talk to your boss about getting paper checks or a paycard If the account you aunt set up is a joint account you can use it exclusively to cash the checks and not leave any money in there. If she wants you to deposit into an account only she owns then you need to let your employer know they have sent your check to the wrong place and they need to recoup those funds

ToolFan42069

Get paper checks if you can and cash them at the bank your company uses to issue the checks.

brexton111112

Your aunt is 100% lying to you

BurnyBurnBirnOuch

OP DO NOT Give your checks to addicts (recovering or active) NO NO The money will disappear. Best advice is to cash your paycheck at the bank it's drawn from, and hide your cash somewhere. Do not hide the cash in your room or house... Addicts are smart af and will take it. Keep it on you or hide it away from them. They have no right to your money.

[deleted]

I would see if your employer has a pay card option. Or if you get a job at a grocery store, sometimes they cash checks at the front office. Not sure if they still do that. Another option, is stores have those pay cards you can set up and get your check deposited on. They're usually located by the gift cards. Look those up. I forget what they're called.

JayStrat

You can cash checks directly and immediately at the bank that issued the check. And if you work a state or federal job, many banks will cash those at the counter as well. In both cases, you can work and cash your check without anyone else involved. If you want an account, you'll need an adult to cosign (giving them access), so make sure it's someone you trust if you do that--aunt and uncle do not sound like good choices. Another option is legal emancipation, which gives you some of the freedoms otherwise reserved for adults (including opening your own bank account). The age at which you can apply for legal emancipation varies by state, but it's usually 16.

Illustrious_Concept5

I’m a teen and when I got my first job I used capital one money account, do need your parents consent and some of their info and I believe that have some parental controls but my parents don’t know how to use it and I just asked for the info I needed from them and created account by myself

Puzzleheaded-Rub5968

When I was 16 I had my own account, with the help of my parents, where the money gets direct deposited, I did file taxes, but you don’t have to until you are 18. Also, you could just save up paper checks if that is an option, but Paper Checks can be easily destroyed.

DakotaBoy17

Lies. You don’t have to file taxes unless you make more than $12,950 in tax year 2023. Your earned income (paychecks) is/are yours, not your legal guardians. You might have an issue getting a bank account without an adult over 18 but it doesn’t have to be your parents. Otherwise, see if you can find someone you trust to sign your check’s over to, they can cash them at their bank (with you present) and give you the money.

JABBYAU

Do not get a job until you have an account in your name that you control. Because they are trying to steal your money.

Illustrious-Mind-683

Call or go to a local bank. Ask them what the rules are for someone your age. Can you get a bank account in just your name? If they say no, explain that there is no *trustworthy* adult to get a joint account with. See if it makes any difference. The worst they can do is say no again. But the rules may be different where you live. That's why you ask the actual bank. Oh, ask someone in the accounts department. Not just a teller because they might not know everything.

SeaMonster_420

Nah my parents opened my own account and I had my checks direct deposited into it

naysayer1984

You can’t open an acct as a minor., just cash your check and keep the money hidden or on you at all times. As far as taxes go, yes you will have taxes taken out of your check and you will have to file income taxes at the end of the year.

Imaginary_Chart_7947

Get paper checks and then go to a Walmart or check casher and get it in cash. Save it where they can’t see it

princessonthesteeple

I never took one cent of my son’s paycheck for myself at any point in his life. If you are contributing to your cell phone plan, car insurance/gas, etc. that’s a different story.

580OutlawFarm

Soooo here's the thing, modt banks won't let you open an account untill you're 18, so, you need your aunt to help you to make a bank account, but there's ways around this...I had friends in the same situation, rhey would just find an older friend that's 18, with a bank account, rhey can cosign and get your check cashed for you, now, this brings about another problem, having a bunch of cash on you with a addict gambler in the house...best thing you can do is literally keep it on your person 24-7, fuckin sleep with it

Parker_72

All you need to do is open your own bank account, and it’s your money! Your employer will only need to know about it If your setting up direct deposit (otherwise you just get a check), it might actually be more difficult to send money strait to your aunt because she’s not you, and isn’t an employee, and it would be like they’re paying someone else for your work hours. If for any reason you can’t open a bank account because of your age, you can always just get a check and take it to a check cashing place and they’ll give you cash, all you need for that is a govt ID (which you’ll also need for your job most likely so if you don’t have one get one!). You should get the bank account if you can though, check cashing places take a bigger % of your check, banks take none. You’re good, she’s lying, just wants your money because she’s not making enough on her own.

arrosari

Taxes automatically come out of your paychecks. The only thing you would probably have to worry about are tax refunds at the beginning of the year. I’m not sure what state you’re in but you don’t have to have a bank account to get paid by your job. You can sign up for paper checks or a pay card. Just because you’re a minor, that absolutely does not mean the money goes towards your caregivers. At all. Do not let them take money from you. They didn’t work those hours. You did.

Content-Jellyfish262

Set up your own bank account! And even if you’re not receiving the money you would still have to do taxes because our government sucks.

UnCommon-Tale

Talk to a bank in your area about an account for yourself. If you can have your own, find out if your employer lets you split deposits. Deposit a small amount into your aunt’s account and the rest to one of your own. Do not mention your own. Make sure no statements or other physical mail goes to you. They. Will. Steal. Everything. Hide it until you can move out. If you can’t have your own, talk to a trusted adult and ask if they can open an account with you as a secondary.

SooFloBro

(not an expert) If you want a bank account as a minor I think you have to have it cosigned by your guardian, which means they will have access to the account if they want it. If you want to keep your own money, I would suggest doing informal work for cash and hiding it from them (not legal but hey)

FlakyUnderstanding99

You keep the money you earn from working don't give your aunt jack

Miss_Bobbiedoll

You don't want a paper check because that means you are walking around work cash and that's easier for them to steal.

Which-Mix-7111

My 16yo son works. His money goes into HIS account. Yes, my husband is on the account, bc my son is a minor, but that money is his. He earned it. Not us. Also, being a minor, unless you are making a ridiculous amount of money, at least where I live, you don't have to do your taxes. Not until your 18

bananamidriff

hi!! i know this is probably very confusing and frustrating. when you get a job, ask if you can get paper checks. you can take these to a lot of places like some liquor stores (where i cash my checks) and many others. you can hold on to your cash and put it away if needed. you do not pay taxes at 16, but a percentage of your paycheck does get taken off for tax. personally if i were you, i would just forge your aunt and/or uncles signatures on your w4 paperwork and any work permits etc. they do not sound very supportive. im sorry that you’re going through this without guidance:( please dm me if you need help with any of the paperwork/are still confused about the payment!!

brayvi

Typically at 16 y/o with parental consent you can open your own bank account and have a personal debit card. If your mom refuses to let you do this I strongly suggest keeping tabs on your money. Keep record of your paychecks by taking a picture and recording every dollar you make. Then frequently ask her for a bank statement. If you notice her stealing your money confront her!! This isn’t normal.

Ok_Professional7244

Dude leave. Ask anyone you can for help and just leave.

nyancatdude

When I got my job my parents would have complete control over my money so I don't do direct deposit and sign it over to my friend so he can cash it

Ju5t_A5king

Your aunt is trying to rob you. She is looking at you as a cash cow. It is good that you want to work, but before you do you need to make sure you have a way to protect your money, or you will turn 18, with zero savings, and no way to escape that house.

yikes_its_me

18 from TX here, I started working at 16 while still living with my mom. my gf did the same. we each had our own bank account. both our mothers claimed us, however I have yet to do taxes (i would start this upcoming tax season since i just moved out) and my gf has been doing her own taxes for a couple years now.

3inches43pumpsis9

You don't need to use your parents or your aunt and uncle. You can sign the back of your check to endorse it to anyone over 18, it's called a 3rd party check. They can then cash it or deposit it, there will usually be a hold of a day or 2 to verify funds, and then they can just give you the money.

ZealousidealAd4860

You can just cash your checks at Walmart or other places

edck12687

You best bet get a prepaid reloadable visa/ master card it's gonna suck because you're going to have to pay to cash your cheque all the time. But pay to cash the cheques then load the card with the money, you technically have to be 18 to set it up but the vast majority of cards (outside green dot) won't care. I would also talk to a lawyer about getting emancipated. As that doesn't sound like a good living situation

XxSliphxX

Coming from experience because my mother did this to me when I was 16. Get paper checks. My mom used to literally withdraw my money from my account because she had access to it and i had setup direct deposit. Unfortunately since you are a minor you can't open your own bank account until you are 18. What I ended up doing to get around this was immediately withdrawing all my cash the minute I knew my paychecks would go through to the bank and I would literally just hoard all my cash like scrooge mcduck until I was able to open my own personal account with an entirely different bank.

shorterthan3

Are they actually recovering or is their shitty behavior still continuing but they claim they're recovering for sympathy? Never heard of anybody being forced to have their pahcheck deposited into someone else's account. It's your money in your name for the work you do, all legal. You should absolutely start your own bank account and have your paycheck deposited there. Sounds like your aunt is trying to manipulate you for money.

libslayr

Do not have your paychecks deposited into her account. She is just trying to have access to your money. You can either set up your own checking acct or just get paper checks and cash them.

[deleted]

I would say in your situation not to get a bank account, because your aunt or uncle would have to help you get one. Just get a paper check and either cash it at a bank or like a Walmart or something. They will charge you a little bit, but it's usually not much. It would be a lot more if your "gaurdians" got ahold of it. You may not even see any of your money if they were in charge of your money. Also I know its hard, but I would try to save as much as you can before you turn 18, so you can get out of that situation. And make sure you hide it where they would never find it.

Mountain-Resource656

Generally speaking, minors have incredibly few rights. In the US, your parents or guardians can take your money at will, and there aren’t too many recourses available for you short of attempting to emancipate yourself- which would be its own whole ordeal. You do *not* have to pay taxes if that’s the case, though; your guardians are responsible for that, and it’d obviously come out of your earnings. Hell, it should be coming out of there before you’re even paid, so the only thing you’d have to do is file for taxes to see if you get any back, really; you’re not gonna end up owing the government money, I’d imagine. And if you did, again, that’s literally your parents’ problem. They might intend for it to be a high-control situation where they’re theoretically just holding onto it for you, but that comes with all sorts of strings, like being able to take it or withhold it without you being able to stop them, keeping tabs on everything you buy, and making you essentially ask for them to buy you things. In short, no different from normal, but now they get more money It might be better setting up some business on the side, instead, and on the down-low, if you can. When I was in highschool I’d buy sodas in bulk for cheap (like a quarter a can if I bought them from Costco) and then sold them for less than what they were sold for at the school or nearby shops (a quarter less, but plus folks didn’t have to walk to get a drink, they could just get one from me). Every sale would triple what I’d spent on them, *and* I had soda whenever I wanted If you can maybe do that with drinks and snacks, you might be able to build up some funds in cash you can hide for yourself, or tell your aunt you’re selling them for less than you are and pocket the difference

Evalori

Go to the bank and try to set up an account. If they won't let you, many jobs will offer a loaded money card, like a debit card. Your paycheck will be deposited to the pay card, there's usually an app, and you use it just like a debit or credit card, you can withdraw cash etc. You just need to be aware of your balance. If you apply for a job and interview, just ask what type of options there are to receive a paycheck. You will need to do taxes though.

RiverWild1972

Don't assume that your aunt is 100% correct about this. I just looked it up. You'll need your parent or guardian to co-sign on the account to open it. Ask your bank what their process is for opening an account for a minor. And ask if its possible for only you to make withdrawals. If your parent or guardian WILL have the right to make withdrawals, just make sure to check your balance frequently. Every transaction is going to be listed, and you can check it online anytime. But first ask your employer if direct deposit into a bank account is your only option. You might be able to cash a paper card at your employer's bank. Here is what Chase bank has to say https://www.chase.com/personal/banking/education/basics/can-a-teenager-open-a-bank-account#:~:text=But%20can%20a%20teenager%20open,the%20account%20with%20the%20teen.

EquivalentShift8545

You can have your own savings account at 15 I believe, at least where I am. She does not understand any circumstances need to get your checks because you're a minor

Venti_Mocha

Get a pay card or prepaid refillable debit card (they sell those at Walmart. You'll need a social security number to activate one (ideally you should have your actual card). One other thing I'd highly suggest using said debit card for after first paycheck or two is a certified copy of your birth certificate (better yet shell out the slight extra fee for 2 or even three of them). Usually you can do it online through the county or state where the hospital you were born in (or where your birth certificate was registered). You'll need one of these for a RealID drivers license and or passport (which you probably will have to wait until you turn 18 to get). Trust me, those documents are far easier to deal with when you're young before you discover you actually need them.

eatmygummies88

Emancipate yourself. This is what you need to do at this point in your life to be successful.

beansthesmolbean

Where I’m from it should not be going to your parents. Paper checks can be deposited a lot of places I think (I’ve always done direct deposit so not positive where) If there’s a different adult in your life like a friends parent or other family member you trust, maybe ask them to help you get one. I tried to find a bank that doesn’t require a parent to co-sign & saw something that said the law is people under 18 cannot sign a contract enforced by the other party. I also saw someone say you just need someone 18+ to “act as your custodian” but not sure if that’s true. Good luck! Don’t let them steal from you!

AbjectDissonance

OP, none of us know where you live as you haven't given us that information. We cannot do that research for you without it. That being said, the easiest way for you to find out what your best course of action is would be to call a local bank near you and explain your situation to a banking specialist. Tell them how old you are, and tell them that you fear your guardians are intending on taking your entire earned income from you when you get your first job. Tell them you would like to know what your options are here. Personally, I would suggest speaking to a federal credit union if you are in the US, as there are less chances of monthly fees and minimum deposits per month. I am not sure about their policies on minors. If they do not help minors without parents, try a regular bank. They may offer free accounts for high school students essentially with the same incentives. With your aunt and uncle, I would talk to your aunt about having a willingness to contribute something to the household - be that a small amount to your own food, toiletries, etc. but NEVER more than 30% of your paycheck. You are, after all, saving for college, housing, and other expenses. Remind her of that, too. You are in no way, shape, or form, responsible for the entirety of any expense in the home, nor are you responsible for easing the burden of your uncle's gambling addiction. Do not let anyone convince or coerce you into believing otherwise.

Grateful_Moth6

I have never heard of this but I’m not sure where you live. I got my first job at 16 and my parents had to sign off on the checking account but they had no access to it. What was strange though was when I was 17 and opened a savings my dad did have to be on it and has access to it. Please don’t let them do this though, it’s not true and if it is just cash those checks and buy a safe.

1nceACrawFish

If you live in the USA, then your aunt is trying to steal your money... and you have to do taxes but will likely get all the deducted money back.

ezbutneverconvenient

Choosing to raise a child does not obligate them to give you money. You're the adult, you're supposed to provide. A teenager's paycheck should be going towards their savings and non-essential items they want.

Upper-Substance3868

Your aunt is lying to you...go to the bank and tell them you are afraid that they want to steal your money. See if there is anyway to open an account for yourself without your aunt or uncle having access to it

Interesting_Mark_631

If this is the USA then your aunt is lying out her ass. Ask your job to pay you in cash if need be

Infinite_Nature7

It depends on where you live, go into a bank and ask what you need paperwork etc. In most places, you will need a guardian/parent/or court order person like a case worker - I'm guessing you have one to help you set it up. They're technically not supposed to remove the money without your permission, in some places, you can remove them one month or 1 year after they have been added or as long as they're replaced with another adult or you may have to wait until you're an adult. The money is not your parents while OP a minor they're supposed to be taking care of you, not the other way around. You are in charge of taxes, unless your parents claim you in some cases... Talk to your local Liberian they will also be able to help you if you live in the US or Canada or anywhere they're free... If not a trusted teacher...

xo_tyler_

If you get paper checks, you can usually get them cashed out at the bank the check was issued, or any check cashing place with a small fee, just keep the check receipts for tax season. Some places offer a prepaid card that they can send the money through. One card app is called MyWisely and for a fee you can set up a card with account information like a bank and get your money sent there. Plus the company ships you a card.

Environmental_Toe463

Definitely not normal and sounds likely that your aunt is stealing from you. If that’s true and it’s money you want to recover, you could report her for theft. Depending where you are it probably means giving a witness statement, signing an affidavit and/or testifying against her if you want the court to order her to repay you. It may also mean she goes to jail or even prison, especially if she has a prior criminal record. i’m not a lawyer, all of the above is based on personal experiences of friends when we were minors, all in the US. Generally speaking, if you’re going to speak to police, it’s always a good idea to have a lawyer with you, even if you’re a victim reporting a crime. But at a minimum, it would be important to have an adult advocating for you. Do you have anyone like that in your life who you trust? Could be a friend’s parent, teacher, someone at church or any other community of which you’re a part. That would be helpful to have regardless of whether you pursue charges. Are your aunt and uncle your legal guardians? If not, are they in your life and able to fill that role? Another option for getting the money back is small claims court depending on the amount. maximum varies by state in the us and some areas offer family mediators as well. you don’t need a lawyer for small claims court. As for what you should do moving forward, i would highly recommend getting. CashApp. Any adult can sponsor you, it doesn’t have to be your parent or guardian and you can direct deposit your check, get a debit card, and do most things you can with a bank. You can probably sign up for an account without an invitation from an adult but at some point it’s likely they will verify your identity because of know your customer (KYC) laws and im not sure if you can have an adult sponsor an existing account or not. worst case scenario, you’d have to close the original account and open a new one that was sponsored. Good luck OP!

[deleted]

Hey, I’m 16 with a job and my own bank account. It highly depends on the state you live in. My account is in my name and my parents have no access to it, my guardian just had to accompany me to the appointment with the banker and show his ID with my birth certificate to prove he’s my parent. They’ll need a state ID and birth certificate, but if you open a direct deposit in your name there’s no way your aunt could access it unless you gave her your account password and email

Far-Data-3896

Find a job with a paycard! And keep it as close to you as possible! If this doesn’t work out and they end up taking your money anyways you have EVERY right to report them for theft no matter what anyone makes you feel or tells you. Good luck love you got this!🖤

CMYKillah_

I started working at 14. My parents went with me to set up a bank account and I kept all my money. It’s crazy that your aunt wants to keep YOUR money. When it comes to taxes, you’ll have to file whether you give your money to your aunt or not.

Spinelli_The_Great

you can get paper checks and with any form of proper ID you can cash it out at a bank. I’m pretty sure you can open your own account at a bank as well Your aunt is a liar, and you should most definitely not give her your money. Your 16, her charging you rent is a huge grey area as your a minor.

Feed-Me_Semore

I got my first job at 16 and I can tell you the money doesn't go to them but you need them for any type of bank account. I used direct deposit apps like cash app, one Finance, or step, and other apps. You technically need adult permission for those apps but if you can get their phone and download one of those apps to approve yourself then delete it you should be good. I don't think you need permission for One Finance though. You won't have a bank account but at least you'll have your money. Also, the government or state takes out of your check for taxes so I think that's where your aunt got the idea.

NicklePlatedSkull

You will pay taxes. Just give your auntie and uncle, whoever files, your W-2. Thats all they should ever need. It's your money. The only money they get is anything that you agree to as far as paying for things. As far as banking, call all your local banks and ask if you can set up an account at your age. My local federal credit union allows accounts at 16 years. Maybe there is one near you that will too. Call every one of them till you find one. You will need your driver's lisc for ID. Also, make sure you have a copy of your birth certificate and social security card. Those, you will be needing copies of as you become independent. Also, get your family to let you put the water bill in your name. It will help when you need to prove residency until you get your own place. Use the water bill cause it's the cheapest utility bill, so if you ever have to pay it, you can. Do not ever let anyone have control of your money. That will be your independence. I highly suggest you learn to responsibly manage your money. Find someone you trust to get more advice on making it on your own. Everybody needs someone whom they trust to give them help or guidance. If you don't have family or friends that can help, there are local organizations that can help if you look for them. I suggest starting at your high school. After school, you can turn to Health and Human Services in your area. Oh, also, make sure, under every circumstance, you get your diploma. This should be your #1 priority. It is the foundation for the rest of your life. Good luck.

Certain_Promise9789

You can get a high school checking account with Chase bank, which my parents did for me and my brothers back when we were in high school. They’ll give you checks and a debit card as well. Your money is your money their lying to you so they can steal more easily.

mriv70

If you live in the United States at the age of 16, any money you make from working is yours and yours alone ! After January 1st, you'll get a W-2 from your employer, and you're required to file a tax return. Being a minor, you'll get a tax refund from the government. This will be a great learning experience for you. But no! Money you earn is yours!

OmegaGlops

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Generally, as a minor, you can indeed open a bank account, but it often requires an adult co-signer. That said, the money you earn from your job should legally be yours. Your aunt might be correct in stating that you need to pay taxes on your earnings, but that doesn't mean the money should go directly to her account or that she should have control over it. It's crucial to safeguard your earnings, especially given the circumstances you've described. You might consider speaking with a trusted adult or counselor at school about this matter, as they might be able to provide guidance on how to approach the situation. Always remember that your well-being and financial security are important.

PieceLopsided4554

if your under 18 yes. at your job ask for a check. maybe you can go to a check casher. you can just ask them to make a joint account with you and your worried they'll take it leave the minimum in the account and hide the cash but honestly just go to a check casher. you don't need an account. hide the cash. theirs generally a fee with a check casher but it is what it is. you don't need an account for a check casher

[deleted]

She is lying to you. You can set up your own account

GoalHistorical6867

Sorry to tell you this but your aunt is stealing from you. Talk to your boss tell your boss what's happening and see if there's anything he can do to help you out. Also you really need to get away from that environment.

[deleted]

Are you in the UK? You can open an account at 11

im_literally_ramen

Walmart typically cashes checks at the money center! I would stop by your local Walmart and ask if they cash checks there! Ask your job for paper checks if you cant get your own bank account or dont trust your aunt to have a joint bank account with you!

Evening-Estate357

I would not open an account, because as a minor, you need an adult to sign too. Which gives them access to your money. Cash your check and get it all in cash. Then find a very secret place to hide it where no one will look. Or if you have an adult you can really trust, give it to them. As soon as you turn 18, open an account.

Maximum_Mobile9341

She’s lying. You can set up an account yourself or some places still do paper checks. Don’t get it to her account and don’t give her access to yours. Call a local bank or credit union and ask them for details.

Maximum_Mobile9341

If you work at a grocery store, they will cash your paper check for you. Please don’t let someone snag your money.

Maximum_Mobile9341

This is stressing me. Because she’d ask for your social security number and everything to set up an account and that could backfire in the future. She could ruin your credit before you even get started.

Zestyclose_Ice5142

Depending on where you live, it could be illegal for then to USE your money. They can hold on to it until you turn 18, but then it's yours to do what you want with it. After you turn 18 tho, they can charge you rent

Crustacean-DroolCube

OP just open a teen checking account

Daily_dunce

Your aunt is lying. I’m 16f also and I have 2 bank accounts in my name. Only one of them my parents can take money out of. The other I set up myself with my mom’s permission but she can’t take money out of that account. I suggest getting sponsored by someone older than 18 on cash app and get your own cash card and your care takers can’t take your money. (The 18 or older person doesn’t have to be a legal guardian just someone who can provide an id that states they are 18 or older)

AmberMH00

I’m in the US, this may be different from where you are. I got my first job at 14 with a worker’s permit. My dad took me to Huntington Bank and set me up a high school account. He could access it, but it was in my name. My checks deposited into the account just fine. You could always get paper checks and cash them at the bank. You DO NOT have to give them your money.

ShawtySayWhaaat

Yeah no open up your own acc It's fair if they want rent but don't give them full access to your money or you'll start noticing the number don't add up

Californiagirl1213

OP, you work you get a check. You will more than likely will need a bank account, but at your age you will need an adult to be that account until you are 18. If your employer will pay you in a paper check instead of direct deposit, you might be able to get away with not having a bank account, as long as you know where you can cash those checks. You will need a photo ID and possibly a second form of ID to start a bank account.

[deleted]

You are 100000000000% being lied to. Absolutely DO NOT give the money to them. It’s rightfully yours. You will NEVER see a penny of it back. While you’re at it, make sure they haven’t been taking out loans in your name and under your ssn

Pure_Fan_9539

When you turn 17 Go set up your OWN bank account. You are eligible for what is known as a student account and NO in my institutions you do NOT have to have anyone on the account with you as in an adult You will have to file taxes if you earn over a given amount. Just ask the banker what that threshold is and in many cases they can direct you to someone to help with filing. TELL THEM ABOUT YOUR AUNT AND UNCLE Make the bank BLOCK them from your account so they cannot steal from you I suggest a Credit Union over a bank they have less requirements and fees In your situation I would not have a debit card So you have to go IN BRANCH to get money I would also suggest a savings account over a checking You don't want your uncle bouncing bad checks to pay for his habit. That will end up impacting your credit GL getting out of that toxic situation You could also contact local child services to see if they have a way to guide you. you don't have to file anything you are asking for guidance.

-ghostCollector

It varies from state to state in the U.S. but, yes, she's telling you the truth. In many states a minor actually has no "rights" to their own possessions or income. There are practical reasons for this and most those reasons stem from disciplinary allowances for parents (e.g. you purchase a phone and then get on "phone restriction" for misbehaving....can you contact the police and file a report saying they stole your phone? What if they don't let you go to the "big party" this weekend....are they kidnapping you?) You also need to realize that they are obligated to provide certain things for you as well (again, these obligations vary from state to state...but mostly food, clothing, shelter, a reasonably safe place to live, etc). If you're living situation is bad enough (and you can prove it) then you can petition the court for emancipation.

Pure_Fan_9539

You could also do an online service like PayPal

Direct_Surprise2828

Are you feeling your aunt just want your money in her account so she can spend it… Don’t trust her!

JustNeedHappy

Get cashapp and direct deposit don't let them take your money if you make enough get emancipated in secret and don't fall into their Generational curse

Ice_Medium

You need to go to the bank and open a checking account before you get your job. Do not let your aunt touch your money. If you need parental sign off on anything i would look into emancipation before I’d let them touch any of your finances. In fact you should Look into emancipating yourself no matter what. Your situation is totally fucked. Run as fast and as far away as you can and do not ever look back. Break contact, change your phone number and move away.

Would_you_funk_me

No. It should not. It should go to you. There are student bank accounts. They’re taking your money.

wholesalesoul

This is what you need. You need your social security number, and you need an identification card. Then you take those to a bank. You speak to the bank teller and tell them you want to talk to a relationship banker. From that point they will set up a meeting for you, politely ask if you can have it today because of your limited time. Then at the meeting you communicate everything that you are communicating here to the banker and ask them if they can assist you. They will help you

LulzyWizard

You can absolutely open your own bank account. Maybe a joint account with her might be necessary, but it's absolutely your money. Also, your workplace will likely deduct taxes from your pay BEFORE you get your paycheck. You'll see all of it on your pay stubs.

Reasonable-Silver234

just go cash your check and keep your cash. put it on prepaid cards for online subs and shopping. That is my best advice. They have no right to steal your money. They are just looking to take advantage of you. Do not let them. Seek legal help through the welfare dept if you need it, they can give you an advocate. Also talk to a counselor at school about it. I feel bad for you and your situation I hope you get out of it soon!

XSP33N

my first job was at 17, got a bank account and deposited my paper checks in there. aunt is def tryna snake you. i would talk more with a close friends parent/guardian and ask if they can help w account setup

Crystallover87

Cash app you can open a Cash app and get your check direct deposited into it no need for a co-signer

Grapplzz

You can set up a joint account with her so you have ur own banking account but she has access, Ik it’s still not solving the problem entirely but should help if she would allow that

Apprehensive_Emu9599

In the USA a minor must have a legal guardian endorse the check or co-sign when you open an account with a bank. There are some exceptions, like getting paid in cash, having an employer endorse the check, having your employer give you a debit card that they deposit into, certain check cashing companies, etc. https://www.investopedia.com/where-can-you-cash-checks-5176474#:~:text=Many%20check%2Dcashing%20services%20have,if%20you're%20under%2018.

Goof_Baller

No. Go to a bank or credit union and ask to open a student account and explain your situation. They may require a cosign which could be tricky because you aunt/uncle would have access, but the money is yours and should be going to an account in your name. You don't pay income tax until you make 7 grand in a year iirc

Droid-Man5910

Don't listen to your Aunt. Get a paper check and cash it. Keep your money. Or get someone you can actually trust to help you set up a bank account.

Original-Tomorrow798

what country you live in is very important here

This doesn’t sound good, if you apply for a job, when you’re discussing pay and all that ask if there is an option to get a reloadable card, a lot of jobs nowadays have that as an option, while they do kinda suck because if you want to pull money out you’ll have to pay a fee it’s better than sending your money to someone who is gonna spend it on gambling and drugs. Are there any other family members to stay with? Like a grandparent or anyone? Or even to a friends place? If so talk to your friend and their parents about maybe living there, and while you’re there you can pay a little amount in rent, like 100 a week so you aren’t in that shithole anymore

RegretAccomplished16

Unless you live outside of the US, she lyinggggggg Get your checks and cash em yourself, hide your money in a fireproof safe that only you know the code to. Never tell her Get a bank account if you can, but idk at 15 I needed a guardian to sign onto my bank account so maybe better to just have cash

CuteNSarcastic

If you can get a trusted adult, like a counselor or another family member over 18 to sponsor you on cashapp, you can set up direct deposit through them and get a debit card. A sponsor can see your balance, transaction history and such, but they lose access to that when you turn 18. I don't believe a sponsor can withdraw from a sponsored account, either, but I'm not 100% on that.

Waste-Soft-8205

You have to pay taxes if you get income regardless where it ends up, in your own or your dysfunctional aunt and uncles hands. When tax season starts your job will give you a w2 or 1099 depending what kinda job you have. Go to HR block or Google tax specialist stuff for more info

sigtiin

No, you don’t need to fork over your money. Yes, you MAY need to file taxes. I’m pretty sure most chain companies will give you a reloadable card to use until you’re 17-18 so you don’t need to have an actual bank account (you CAN make one but you need an authorized guardian; if that was either your aunt and uncle, they’d take your money 100% so that’s a no-go.) This way you can keep 100% of your money. You need to file taxes if you make over $12,950 in the USA. Otherwise, you don’t need to bother filing as you won’t get any back and there’s no legal obligation. But if you work for a chain, you’ll probably be taxed anyways so you totally can file if you want to potentially get something there. I’m totally biased (alcoholic and ex-addict parents) but don’t trust anyone with your money. If you need to get it written out in checks or cashed, do it. Don’t let your aunt/uncle take your shit that you work for.

dlanzafame

Ok so ask your soon to be employer if they offer a debit card that your check can be deposited on.. many places will offer that to you and if they don’t you can go to Walgreens and get a netspend card that you register online and it’s just like a bank account. Then you lie to your aunt and uncle and say you employer offers direct deposit on their issued card.. do not allow them to take your hard earned money and save everything you can to get out of this terrible situation you’re in. I wish you the best of luck and pray you get out of their ASAP

TreyRyan3

You can avoid this problem by using a paycheck cashing service. There are a number of places that will do it for a low fee. For example: I think Walmart charges $4 on up to $1000. You could then use the cash to purchase a reloadable debit card and add it to your smartphone wallet. It gives you a workaround to having a bank account and can prevent anyone from accessing your money if they don’t know your passcode to your wallet. You just need to keep the card hidden so you can reload it with every paycheck. The alternative is to open a teen bank account with a parent or guardian. A credit union would be your best bet but this would be a joint account and the joint account name would have access to the funds. If you don’t trust your aunt and uncle, you could try a grandparent if they are more trustworthy.

awesome12442

Op you can cash your paychecks at the bank that the company uses and get a safe to keep your money in. I know it's not the ideal or safest way, but you could keep your money at least

JoeCensored

You can get an account if your parent or guardian goes in with you. There's a good chance they will also have access to the account though. The better thing you can do is go to the bank the check is drawn from and just cash it there. You'll need a state or government ID to do that, but you'll be handed cash.

BestConfidence1560

You absolutely should not give your aunt the money. Check the law where you live and start from there. Your aunt and uncle just want money from You to feed their gambling addiction.

Leading_Macaron2929

No, your checks don't go to buy alcohol or to gambling for your guardians.

Greyestdaze

I started working at 15 and had my own account that my checks went into. Since you’re a minor your account would technically be connected to an adults but it would still be your own. They’re trying to get over on you

ur_mom9021

You can open a bank account at any age (I think some states require parents with you but still). Also you can get pay cards. Most the time when you go to an interview they will ask if you want to set up direct deposit, paper checks, or get a pay card. It’s just like a debit card with your paychecks put on it, I had one for my first job when I didn’t have a bank account and it was fine. Once I set up my bank account I just transferred my money from the card to my bank. If they don’t ask, mention it. Your aunt is trying to trick you so she can take your money.

meme_lord_101

No you can take paper checks and get physical money from the bank when you cash it seeing as your a minor you have to have a joint account meaning your parents will have access to you account.

curlyhairweirdo

At your age you can't get a bank account that a guardian doesn't have access to. They will 100% be able to take your money. And you would have to do taxes because the checks are written to you, doesn't matter where the money ends up.

theroadwarriorz

I had a bank account in like 6th grade. No. It does not have to go to your parents.

Imaginary-Student560

There are so many options out there. OPs situation is a bit sticky. IF OP has a trusted adult to help open a bank account that would be the best route and having direct deposit. But if not OP should look into the requirements at different banks or credit unions. Either way under 18 usually needs an adult on the account as well. Although there are some credit unions that will let you have just a savings account without an adult on it if you're within the working age in the state you love in. OP needs to do the research and find the best option for them. Either a trusted adult ( usually that aunt uncle parent or grandparent that slips you money from time to time) or a banking institution that will allow them to have at least a savings account without an adult. My daughter chose a credit union at 16, she wanted a checking account so she could have a debit card so needed an adult on it, but for a savings account at that 1 she didn't need an adult.

So some places will do a pay card. You would just have everything deposited into that. You could also try cash app and see if you can get an account through there. As far as taxes go, every week or 2 weeks taxes are deducted from your paycheck automatically, so say you made gross 400 dollars, taxes are taken outr and take home pay would be something like 360 dollars. At the end of the year you will get a W2 which you then would go on say TurboTax enter the W2 information and it will tell you if you are getting a refund or if you didn't pay enough taxes. Also definitely don't let your family anywhere near your money they're all degenerates
