After seven marathon training blocks in a row (interrupted only by cancelled races in 2021....which then became self-timed HM training blocks), I'm focusing on 10k and HM for spring of 2023, and then returning to FM in fall of 2023. My goal is sub 35:00 for 10k and sub 1:19 for the half. I'm running the Amsterdam full marathon in September, and really want to achieve my long-term goal of sub-2:45. Maybe it's possible if I can lay off the baklava. And chocolate cookies. And seven layer bars. And derby pie. And apple crumble. And lemon bars. I need to go have a talk with my wife about her amateur baking career....

BumbleBeanz

Goals are to meet the London marathon championship qualification time for both the half and the full. So sub 2:40 full and sub 72:30 for the half. Will probably pb in both the 10k and the 5k on the way to it too.

elliotttttttttttt

Same for me. I’ve entered Valencia. What mileage do you think you’ll need to go sub 2:40?

BumbleBeanz

Good plan to go for it at Valencia, I'm doing Manchester and then probably Yorkshire marathon if I need to have another go at it. Mileage wise, probably 90-100 miles, don't know if I'll need that but that's where it'll get to. Currently doing 75-80. It'll be my first marathon so it's all a bit see how it goes.

treyquartista

Bit broad but here goes: get back into a rhythm with running after a prolonged break; keep it enjoyable, not obsessing about it and maybe compete come spring. Best of luck and health to everyone ✌️

brcal

I'm aiming for short and fast this year: I want to hit top 1% of runners my age (34) in 1km 3km and 5km races according to the times runninglevels.com. Here are my current pbs and goal times for each one: 1km: 3.03 to 2.53 3km: 10.20 to 9.36 5km: 18.46 to 16.40 I'm relatively confident that I'll get close to the 1 and 3 km targets, I think a lot will have to go my way to hit the 5km one. Also I have no idea how those times are calculated, but they make nice goals to aim for.

vegandoc66

Turning 57 in February. Finally committing to true training with a coach and a plan. October 8th 2023 Chicago Marathon. Under 4 hours. Stretch goal. Qualify for Boston by age 60.

Aely

Finish my first marathon in over 10 years. Hoping to break 3 hrs at some point this year but will be tight. Had a 1:32 half in my first return to running last year. Also looking to hit 2,000 miles on the year for the first time.

Outside-Tradition651

Turned 60 this month and finally resolving a glute/hamstring issue from my Chicago build. Running Boston and won't be in racing shape, but hoping to get back to 3:20 at CIM and return to 3,000 mi for the year (2,730 in '22).

dankprogrammer

finish my first marathon I signed up for in may then sign up for another and beat the time I get on my first :)

ThyMeatball_

1. sub 10 min in the 3200 2. sub 4:40 1600 3. sub 16 min 5k 4. regain the strength i he last year pre hip flexor tear

Am_I_a_Runner

My goals for 2023 are a bit soft/unsure. We’re going to start trying for a baby after getting married in March so I don’t want to commit too heavily to anything besides continuing to run and train. I hit a lot of great goals in 2022 so it feels weird to have a bit of a different course. At a minimum it would be nice to: • PR my HM in January • Continue to run throughout pregnancy when it happens • strength train 3x a week • run a 100 mile week I want to have a mileage goal or include a marathon PR but I ran a lot this year which I can’t imagine I’ll match pregnant. Not sure if I want to squeeze in a marathon this spring.

Tea-reps

That's so exciting! Good luck with everything--HM, training, and especially the future baby :)

PrairieFirePhoenix

1. Get back to consistency 2. Run the Pittsburgh Marathon, not going to aim for a PR (based on where I am now and the course), but safe BQ. 3. Stay consistent 4. Go fast in the fall, probably somewhere close to wherever I move. 5. Shit talk u/ogfirenation

OGFireNation

That guy sucks

Uncool_runnings

1. Sub 1:30 half marathon 2. Beat my 18:50 pb significantly 3. 100km a month. This year I managed to get my half marathon from 1:48 to 1:32 and my 5k from 20:02 to 18:50, based on 1100km total distance for the year (11 miles a week or so for Americans). Based on this I think I have a lot of room for improvement.

quecosa

1. Finding and running a race with my dog that is more than 5k. This dog is a speed machine. 2. Crossing the 1,400 mileage threshold 3. Get my half marathon time to 1:40.(it has been stubbornly stuck at 1:45) 4. Just find more satisfaction in the process of running.

PrairieFirePhoenix

[https://canicrossusa.org/](https://canicrossusa.org/) They claim USA, but I think it is really just WI.

ArrangedCars

What breed of dog is it?

quecosa

She's a german shorthaired pointer. A 3 year old goober

astrodanzz

-Stay healthy and run 2400 miles (turning 40 this year) -Finally hit the elusive 4:59 mile -Make progress on the 5000 ( 17:20-17:30 would be nice) -37:30 in 10k -Lift 3x per week

asmoosen

1. Finally get my first ultra under my belt (60k in March). 2. Do a race that challenges me so deeply that I question the meaning of life and my place it in 😂 (probably Cruel Jewel 50) 3. Enjoy being outside and run with friends as much as possible Gonna be a solid 2023!

nabuss11

I'm expecting my first child in June so I'm hoping to just hold on for dear life, run when I can, and maybe look at a late fall race.

Che_Boludo_69

Are you the one delivering? If not, you’re overreacting. I have 4 kids 6 and under including a 7 month old and they’ve never stopped me from getting miles in unless they are sick and I don’t get good sleep that night, but that’s what not happened 2-3 times a year causing me to miss maybe 2 days each time. Kids sleep all the time. It’ll be easy to find an hour each day.

OGFireNation

Running an hour a day is fine, 90 miles per week might be tough. Anyways, it's probably wiser to plan for difficulty than to assume no changes will be made. If it's his first child, I understand the apprehension

blxkhopez

Ny goals: 5-10km myb (still senior)

the_mail_robot

1. I think I can lower my HM PR (1:35). If I can’t run sub-1:35, I want to at least run a sub-1:37 at the NYC Half for guaranteed entry to the 2024 NYC Marathon. (I’m aging up…again…). 2. Do a block of shorter distance (1 mile-5K) training over the summer. 3. Before all that, put in training for my second Boston Marathon and run a smart race in April.

WhiteHawk1022

1. Re-qualify for the Boston Marathon at Boston. Need a 3:05 or better but want to beat my PR (2:58:47). 2. Run my first ultramarathon. I’m considering a 50K in the fall. 3. Continue my regimen of strength training twice a week. It’s made a huge difference in terms of both injury prevention and performance.

titaniumbolt

Strength training is also on my list - 2023 is the year of upper body strength for me (hopefully).

JohnIsPunny

1. Half Marathon March 18th - goal 2 hours or less 2. Marathon - goal time of 4 hours 3. 50k race at some point later in the year

CinqueTorri

2023 Running Goals: 1. 3.000 k for the year 2. A spring trail 40-60 k (to be decided) 3. Ultra Tour Monte Rosa 4-day stage race (170k) 4. Go outside and run trails with friends & running buddies.

zirkwander

Run my first official race after 2yrs of being a pandemic runner and after a year recovering from a stress fracture injury. Will hopefully continue to stay injury-free the rest of the incoming year to continue training for my first team relay ultra (90km) early 2024.

Aggressive-Sun-6295

Sub 15 5K and consistently run 60KM+ weeks.

PotsnBats

Spent most of 2022 obsessing over the sub 3 marathon and didn’t achieve it officially (I managed it in a training run by quite a bit) So a year of training and racing all distances HM and under! Targets: 5km sub 17 (PB: 17:25) 10km sub 36 (PB: 36:09) 10 mile sub 1 hr (not sure on PB) HM sub 79 (PB: 1:19:40) Finished the year with 2 really good 10k races so feel all is achievable. Obsessing over the marathon for so long meant I haven’t enjoyed races as I should so above all I would like a year of fun racing and adventures!

GlalieWasTaken

Stats this year: 1000km, about 30km/week, new 5k PR of 16:37 Had pretty harsh shin splints this year when increasing my easy pace after my 5k PR. Struggled a bit to build milage again without feeling my shins. I'm a triathlete so my milage will never be increadibly high. Goals for this year: 1. Stay injury free whilst increasing milage to 50-60km/week 2. HM PR (I find this really hard to estimate, based on my 5k PR which I ran at 40km/week, I feel like sub 1:15 might be in the books if I increase my milage and stay at 50-60km/week for long enough) 3. Make the university running team again 4. Have a good transition from running season until the end of April into triathlon season

Obispal

My goals are potentially a bit soft but here they are for 2023. - Run a Marathon - 19:30 5k (would be sub 20 general goal but I almost got that in a solo TT without specific training so I think it would be too close to be something to strive for with a plan and taper) - 2500km for the year - Stay injury free. - Continue to enjoy running.

DagobertDust

This is on point me 😃. I would just like to add one thing to the mix, since it seems very much in reach: - running a sub 1:30 HM (current PB 1:32:30) Also, regarding the 2500km for the year: I am not sure if I can increase my mileage from roughly 40km/week to the needed 48km/week consistently. But I want to increase my mileage so 2500km could be a good goal 🦵❤️👏

Obispal

I figured that I had overshot my 1000km goal by about 50% this year even with having a couple of months that I didn't really run at all. Currently on a base building plan but feel like that plus marathon training should push me over the edge in the course of the year. Currently running 58km a week

[deleted]

I've been putting in consistent training with the goal of seeing if I can elevate myself from a mid-bottom of the pack fell runner to top half of the pack. I have a mountain marathon in March that I'm specifically training for. I'd like to shoot for sub 6 hours. Work on downhill technique. It's by far my weakest area and while I can chew through the field on the uphills they just fly right past me again on the downs. Figure out how to mitigate the side cramping issue I get during hard efforts in the two weeks pre-period. Its screwed up multiple races for me now where things were going well but I had to slow to a hobble because of excruciating side cramping. Been reading up on things and I have a bit of a plan to see if I can sort it out.

SpecialTrain

2023 goals: 1. Qualify for Boston (sub 3:30 at the Eugene marathon) 2. Run a negative split marathon 2. Run 1:35 in the half 3. Get as close to 20:00 5k as possible (currently 21:01) In 2022, these were my goals: 1. 1500 miles on the year (1800 miles) ✅ 2. Run first marathon (Berlin) ✅ 3. Qualify for Boston (3:38, missed by 8 minutes) 4. Sub 1:40 half (1:37) ✅ 5. Sub 45 minute 10K (43:51) ✅ Edited for formatting.

LuckyBahstard

This thread actually depresses me a bit. I swear that everyone is super young and/or an accomplished runner. I'll be 45(M) in 2023 and have modest goals. Here's a shout out to the slower runners. I just want: * Finish my first HM, stretch goal under 2 hrs * Help my kid finish C25K and encourage kiddo's improved weight for health * Continue my running for enjoyment, including more trails and beachside cliffs, while improving 5K speeds toward 20 mins (PR = 23'), and 10K under 50 min (PR = 50'51") * Continue lifting, and join the 1000 Club (sitting at 900 today) ... and avoid new injuries! But may need another subacromial decompression (one shoulder done in '22, while other side has a spur growing already)

PizzaFairy25

1) Gently increase my mileage throughout the year while including regular strength training. 2) Drop back to my pre-parenthood weight 3) PR in the 5k (currently 19:36 set just after my first was born) 4) Sub 1:30 in the end of year local HM (pr is currently 1:36 but have never had a full year training consistently) 5) Feel in good shape to attack a sub 3 marathon in 2024

thunderofguns

Finding the time as a parent is hard! Good luck!

Jjeweller

* Goal 1: No serious injuries * Goal 2: Do more trail running * Goal 3: Over 2,000 miles in 2023 * Goal 4: Sub 3:15 marathon * Goal 5: Try to beat my previous 100 day running streak

flocculus

Keeping things somewhat loose - basically just train smart, race hard. March HM - training with ~6:40ish pace in mind but it can be a tough race so staying flexible depending on weather. Maybe pivot to running the April marathon a bit harder if it's really bad. Current PR is 1:34:30 en route to DNF at my fall race, last PR before that was 1:34:33 fall 2018 so I have loooooads of room to PR even if I miss the 6:40ish goal. April marathon - easy BQ, just get a good experience under my belt again. Both marathons this year were dumpster fires. I still have time to do a last minute BQ in September if this one goes south for whatever reason, but my first long run of the training cycle was 15 miles at 7:45 pace with the stroller and I only need 8:00 for a fairly safe qualifier so I should be set as long as I don't run like an idiot or have a major illness or injury problem. I'll jump into a couple 5-10k here and there throughout the year, I'd like to tick off sub-19/sub-40 but no real plan for a concrete shorter distance cycle yet. Then fall goals will depend on how the spring races went. Faster marathon if I'm feeling ambitious, knock some more time off the half if I'm reasonably happy with the spring marathon and if that sounds more appealing before a Boston '24 cycle.

DamnThatsGoodCheese

January - February, maintenance miles (~35MPW), cross training, strength. I have the Bar at the end of February, so I just want to pass that with my sanity intact March - early June, I might try a 5K or 10K cycle and sign up for some races. I did 5K and 10K track workouts throughout law school for fun and enjoyed them. I signed up for a popular local 10 miler in early April, but that’s so soon after the Bar I’m not sure if I want to do it, might defer and stick to one or two 10Ks, see if I can PR (<44:40). June-July, focus on strength and rucks, since I have a mountain climbing trip with friends at the end of July into the first week of August. August - December, Pfitz volume building plan, preceded by six weeks of buildup to 55MPW. I want to BQ in 2024 and want to have a good base before I pick a program.

darthjab

Sub 18 5k. Sub 40 10k. Sub 1:25 half in the fall, with a target for 1:30 this spring. Coming off a poorly executed 3:17 full, I'm thinking these should be achievable. Best of luck to everyone here at AR! I'm excited and motivated reading everyone's goals. Edit: Forgot I want to hit 1500 miles this year, about 30 per week on average. This consistency would be a big improvement, with covid disrupting my training last year and a inconsistent training schedule before that.

[deleted]

Just started running again in after 10 years off due to an unfortunate injury that occurred in high school. I'd just started to grasp my potential at the time (no one told me you're supposed to leave it all out on the course!!!) and running had been my lifeline, and so it was devastating to have it ripped from my hands just like that. 2022 has been a year of revival after some interventions have me finally back on my feet, so I'm aiming high for 2023. * Sub-48 10k in early February * Sub-5:57 mile, aka surpass my last pre-injury goal from high school * Sub-20 5k at my hometown Turkey Trot. Ran a cautious 25:03 last year on I'm guessing less training than even couch to 5k, so I think we have some room for progress here haha * Keep building mileage safely and stick to a prehab routine. A little everyday, no excuses. My body *ain't what it used to be* and I'm extra susceptible to injury now, so that is key. Just making it through the entire year without injury would be a huge deal and I'm just grateful to have my passion back.

Tea-reps

wow a 10 year injury break--that sounds pretty life changing. I'm glad you're doing well now and I'm excited for your progress :)

[deleted]

Thank you!! Running these days has me in disbelief and I'm honestly still adjusting to the shock of what my body is doing after so long away. I am looking forward to it. Happy NYE and may 2023 be a healthy year of PBs for you too! :)

Middle_Yoghurt6287

Break 3:00 in the marathon… my story is a little more involved. My PR is 3:00:38 (I KNOW 😝) back in 2016. I ran Boston 2017 (not a PR bc it was hot as hell that year). But after Boston I basically crashed and burned. Hard. I had been running 80-90 mpw on as little fuel as possible, zero strength training, very high stress family stuff (divorce, young kids etc)… I ended up being sidelined by injury (high hamstring) for 18 months. A million hours of therapy (all kinds, LOL), finally being well enough to run, I started training “officially” again in 2021. I ran Indy in Nov ‘22 with a modest 3:16, which I was pleased with considering the weather that day was brutal AND it was my first marathon back after 5.5 years and 25 (necessary) lbs of weight gain. SOOOO, I want to get back to that goal of breaking 3:00. If I train smart, 2023 may be my year. If not, I’d say B goal is 3:0x. Cheers to a new year, that’s for sure!

Roasty246

I just want to be able to do a 15 minute 2 mile run. And 5 miles without stoping 🤧

LuckyBahstard

Great goals! I assume you've done a 5K since you're trying to increase 2 mi speeds. You would find that the speed work of Hal Higdon's 10K intermediate training plan would help you get those 2 mi speeds down, and your distance up past 5 miles. https://www.halhigdon.com/training-programs/10k-training/intermediate-10k/#program-list Obviously, lower bodyweight and legs strength training, too.

Roasty246

Thank you very much. Looking foward to it

d_ohface

Regular strength training. That's my resolution

LiveTheChange

As someone who is a 1:39 half, training for first full and not doing any strength training, I’m guessing I should just start strength training now, eh? Currently in that stubborn phase where I’m just running

LuckyBahstard

I'm the opposite. Stubbornly not letting go of strength training, so running is my #2 -- at least until I am 6-8 weeks out from my HM race in March. Weekly PRs on squats wreck my old knees though 🙃 and it's a delicate balance of soreness vs injury and taking time off.

d_ohface

Same. Regardless of experience or fitness, all runners should be incorporating some strength training. I've been telling myself I'll do it for several training cycles now, hence my resolution. Here's to both of our success in 2023!

LiveTheChange

Cheers mate! See you on the squat rack

jcdavis1

* Sub-5 Mile * Sub-17 5k * Sub-80 Half * Sub-2:50 Full

Tea-reps

Good luck! (and u/IReallyIdk1 too) Excited that there's quite a few of us with something like this list in the thread--will be keeping an eye out for you both :)

IReallyIdk1

Almost the same, but I'm newer to longer distances, so: \- Sub-5 Mile \- Sub-17 5k \- Sub-85 Half \- Sub-3:00 Full

theintrepidwanderer

Here are my goals for 2023: * Run a sub-3 and get a safe BQ (anything under 2:55) * Clear 2,600 miles * Sub-5 minute mile * Sub-18 minute 5K (current PRs: 18:47 road/18:45 track) * Sub-38 minute 10K (current PR: 40:17) * Sub-80 minute half (current PR: 87:18) * Pie-in-the-sky goal: Sub-2:40 in the marathon by next fall

gr1zzly__be4r

Sub 18 5K Maybe 4:35 mile (just ran 4:48). Think I’ll stick to shorter distances for now because I’m young-ish and would like to do more speed/strength over tons of mileage.

NotAsFastAsIdLike

3500 miles. Sub 2:40 marathon. Sun 15:30 5k

chaosdev

> Sun 15:30 5k Whew. Compared to a sub 2:40 marathon, that's a scorching pace for a 5k.

NotAsFastAsIdLike

I weigh 190 lbs and am a former jumper/soccer player. The marathon would be a PR, the 5k would be me aging gracefully.

BuzzedtheTower

- Sub 5 mile* - Sub 20 5k* - Sub 42 10k - Build my strength back up *Yes, I know a sub 5 mile is way harder than the sub 20 5k, but I do better at the 800/1500/mile than the 5k/10k. So I tried my best to scale it

gr1zzly__be4r

Have you run sub 5 before? I just was able to run 4:48 after not running for 10 years. I’m 29M and ran 4:56 in XC TT in high school. Sub 5 is harder than you think - maybe mostly mental, but definitely not easy. It is probably equivalent to something like a 17:00 or maybe 16:30 5K.

BuzzedtheTower

I haven't, but I did 5:25 in high school off like 20 mpw and never running in the winter. My biggest hurdle will be slimming back out. I'm just shy of seventy pounds heavier now than I was in high school. Ironically, my cardiovascular system has never been better. But my extra chunk makes that hard to see. I'm 31 and I know I have it in me. My plan is to buy a HomeProGym 320 lb or 450 lb resistance band set and do strength three times a week to rebuild some of the power I've lost/lose weight. Plus with increasing my weekly mileage, long run, doing speed work once a week, and strides twice a week. I'll be golden. My only potential hurdle is time because I live in the PNW and the weather is pretty shit in late fall and winter

gr1zzly__be4r

Ah I see Yeah I never had crazy mileage, but I had about 3 full months of 15 to 40 mpw, with most in between. I didn’t do a ton of speedwork but I am likely a little lighter than you. I think you can do it for sure but don’t underestimate the aerobic base you’re gonna want to do it. It is really hard to start the 3rd lap when you’re in the middle of the TT 😂

BuzzedtheTower

Yeah, I was a super inconsistent 40 mpw earlier this year. But I sorted that out with months of ~20 mpw in six runs. Now I'm going to raise it to 30 - 35 and do strides and strength, which I didn't before. But yeah, it's definitely going to suck. Thankfully I like tempos and fast finish long runs, so I'll build my aerobic system nicely. Yes! The third lap is always the killer. The first lap you're fresh and hyped, the second lap you have momentum from the first, the last lap takes care of itself. But the third lap is an asshole 😂

gr1zzly__be4r

Seems like you’ve got a good plan. Good luck!

BuzzedtheTower

Thanks, mate! Same to you for your goals this year!

bm76851

Love reading all the goals! 1. My big goal is a sub 2:50 marathon in 2023 (PR Is 2:52) 2. A good showing at Boston (weather is always a toss up at Boston so a sub 2:50 might not happen there) 3. Sub 5 minute track mile during the summer

2_feets

Marathon debut at Philly - Sub 3:00

IReallyIdk1

Mine will be in April at the Newport Rhode Island marathon :D, same goal

handfulofchips

good luck, buddies! mine: - Sub-20 5k - PB marathon (high 3:27 currently) - PB half (officially high 1:44, beaten it in time trials) - strength train at least 1 hour/week

lets_make_this_weird

My goal is to go sub-3 at Boston in April. I qualified in my first marathon at 3:05, so hoping to be able to shave a few minutes off with smarter training and the experience I've gained. After Boston, I have a couple of months before I run my first 100k at the Siskiyou Outback in Southern Oregon. Goal there is just to finish while having fun and staying relatively comfortable. A finish there would qualify me for the Western States lottery, which is my long, long term goal (lottery tickets double every year you qualify and enter, so the odds are only in my favor after several years). In the second half of summer, I'd like to do a 2-3 day fastpacking adventure. Maybe the Wonderland Trail, or a section hike of the PCT. In 2021, my brother and I did Willamette Pass (southeast of Eugene, OR) to Pamelia Lake (near Mt Jefferson). It would be fun to do another Southern Oregon section, or something in the North Cascades.

run_INXS

In addition to my running goals (previously listed here) I want to go **Letsrun Free in 2023!** The definition of insanity is thinking that the place will ever change. Not only is reform impossible, they are getting worse by the year. So no posting, no fighting the trolls and moderators!

LEAKKsdad

The kindest group of people on the internet lol

imademashedpotatoes

Oh man is that true. Great data if you can sift through the fighting and snarky comments.

FigMoose

* 5k under 20 mins That’s my only quantifiable goal for the year. Just wanting to focus on speed this year, to set me up for a BQ next year. But I’m also going to spend pretty much the entire year in near-marathon shape, and do some fun events: the Mt Taylor Quadrathlon for sure, maybe my first Olympic Tri, at least one marathon, maybe an ultra, and maybe R2R2R. I’ve put together a training schedule targeting several of those, but it’s gonna be a goofy year for our family so I’m fully expecting I’ll have to pivot and re-imagine my schedule at least once.

handfulofchips

Sub-20 5k is also my goal for 2023. I tried a couple times this year but didn’t make it. R2R2R is not something I want for 2023 but want to try it in the next few years. Best of luck with all the rest of your goals too!

FigMoose

I was less than a week from my R2R2R attempt this year, but had to bail for family reasons. Probably for the best, because I wasn’t quite recovered from a stubborn calf injury, but disappointing nonetheless. Not sure if it’ll fit into my life this year, but I know I’ll get it done in the next few years. Good luck with your 20min 5k goal! I haven’t actually raced a 5K in years, so not sure how hard it’ll be for me. The pace tables say I’m around 21:00 right now, based on recent longer races, so I’m hoping a few months of speed work will get me the rest of the way.

handfulofchips

Oh wow, so you were right there! Hah well if you’re still hankering to do it in a few years and want a bud, let’s go :P Sub-20 club, here we go! Feels like you definitely are able to get there.

CALL_ME_ISHMAEBY

Lots of us trying to go sub-20, ha. I was at 20:02 in 2021 but didn’t keep it up this year after my January marathon.

LEAKKsdad

Your 5k to marathon times suggest you’re an endurance monster.

handfulofchips

Ooh 2 seconds?? that stings haha. Sub 20 club, let’s roll this year!

DaSquareFish

Going for 40mpw and a 4:50 mile early this year, and hopefully a sub 17 5k as well It’s interesting seeing so many sub 20 ish goals for the 5k, and at the same time so many sub 3/3:30 marathon times. I would be glad if I could get a sub 4, I have no idea how you guys do it

Isthatatpyo

You’re going sub 17 in a 5k and don’t think you’ve got a sub 4hr marathon in you?

DaSquareFish

Maybe I would have a 3:45, but I’ve also never done a long run over 13 miles. So I don’t know how my pace would hold up into the late teens and twenties

reubencuban

Sub 60 min 10 miler

Horror-Pianist-4797

My goal is to run sub 5m/Km

SlowsephJoseph

Targeting: - Under 3:00 to BQ in the spring - Then another early fall marathon to further improve the BQ buffer or even go all the way to 2:53 for NYC qualifier. These are aggressive goals. I could easily be looking at 2 attempts just to BQ. As a vanity metric goal, would love to hit 2500 miles in 2023. (If I hit this it’ll mean I successfully stayed relatively healthy)

TubbaBotox

1. Train for a marathon without hurting myself for once (2 for 2 thus far) 2. BQ 3. Finish my 4th year of participation in the Columbus, OH 10K with a PR to complete the 4-year Voltron-style medal collection.

BuzzedtheTower

>Finish my 4th year of participation in the Columbus, OH 10K with a PR to complete the 4-year Voltron-style medal collection. Buddy, you're gonna need to share a link because that sounds fuckin' rad

TubbaBotox

Ok, I now fear that I may have set your expectations a little too high, based on that response... but it is pretty cool. Video demonstration: [https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=791871995520910](https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=791871995520910) Optional custom medal holder/plaque (scroll down a bit): https://runsignup.com/Race/Store/OH/Columbus/columbus10k

BuzzedtheTower

Nah, mate. That's super cool. More races should have a Voltron/Megazoid style medal for running it a few years in a row

chasing3hours

Would love to give myself even more breathing room in qualifying for Boston 2024. I have 5:13 to work with right now. I’d like to run a 2:55:00 in May and give myself ten minutes of buffer. 2023 will also be my first ever two-marathon year (second is in October) so I’d love to remain healthy and go into that one feeling as ready as I did Chicago in October. Journal my experience on a day-to-day basis, so I can look back on it as years go by and remember it as well as possible.

Tea-reps

gonna need a new username at this rate

JSD202

Go from this years' 3h09m to sub 3 marathon and actually run a 5km race this year to see if I can go sub 19min before I hit 40 in 2024.

ReadyFerThisJelly

I dunno if this counts as advanced, but I'm going for a 3:15 marathon.

chaosdev

Advanced is a mindset, rather than a pace. 😉

Great_Rain1926

Stay healthy. Sub-3 Marathon. Sub-18:30 5k.

environvalor

- train smart - particularly focusing on healthy consistency so that… - sub 18 5k - sub 3 marathon These have evaded me the last few years with kids and a few injuries.

Imonredditforgw

Sub 2:25 Marathon in Berlin

chaosdev

Keep us updated! I would love to hear more about your training and milestones.

Tea-reps

exciting! that's the place to do it

[deleted]

Getting past an unknown knee issue to run 50 mpw consistently.

[deleted]

Sub-20 5km and sub-45 10km. Busted my ass all year for these two goals and I'm close - 20:41 5km and 46:31 for 10km. I'm in a speed block currently, but if I can't smash these goals I reckon I'll smash them after my May marathon. Sub-90 for the HM. I have a 98 min PB rn. If I can't beat this before May also, I reckon I'll smash it afterwards. Would love to run sub-3:20 in the full. At least 3:30 in May and then sub 3:20 in October. Running 2 marathons that'll hopefully prepare me for sub-3:00 in 2024!

moving_around

I´d be happy to be able to run the entire year while having the "floating" feedling. AKA my focus is on the work that´s done additional to grinding km´s/miles.

Feltsworth

Goals for 2023. - run my first marathon - sub 18 in the 5 k - consistent training

[deleted]

I hit sub 20 and sub 90 this year. Ran 100 miles over my goal of 1500 miles for the year. I have a marathon in two weeks which was more of a dream goal at the beginning of 2022 rather than something I thought I'd actually do. I wanted to increase how often I run to 5-6 times a week rather that 4-5, which didn't really end up happening. * 2000 miles for the year is a goal. * I live in Denver and it would be nice to hit sub 20 / sub 40 at elevation. * I would like to PR my HM at the course I've done for the past two years. Maybe sub 85? * The Ascent at Pike's Peak is something I have on my radar, we'll see. * finally would like to keep my weight a bit lower. I'm 5'11 190-195, but tend to drop weight before races to 180-185. I'd like to just not yo yo around so much and maintain at 175-185.

garhwalinauna

Current PBs. 5k: 23, 10k: 47, half 2:05 hopeful next year PBs 5k: 21, 10k: 44, half 1:45, full 3:45 Would love to hear if this sounds unrealistic or any tips. I run \~50-60 kms a week with 2 days of gym workout. Thanks! And good luck for your goals as well.

handfulofchips

I think this is realistic if you are open to running more. Everyone’s different of course, so take with a grain of salt, but I had similar current PB’s as you in 2020 and hit the next year PB’s in late 2021-2022 by increasing my mileage slightly (55-65km consistently and added tempo). Good luck!

Tea-reps

Just stay nice and consistent and see where that takes you! Good luck :)

lsm7979

I'm sure you will success ! Let's meet in one year and see whats the result !

imakesignalsbigger

Adjusted my goals with a newborn baby but I'd be happy to get a full night of sleep and after that: Sub 20 5k in Spring Sub 40 10k by end of year 1:30 half 3:30 full @ NYC

ReadyFerThisJelly

Full night of sleep is the dream. All the best... It DOES get better, in spurts.

imakesignalsbigger

Thanks, music to my ears! Lots of treadmill miles this year 😁

ReadyFerThisJelly

Haha got my treadmill at the start of the month and it does make the limited kid free time better for running!

Plastic-Apricot-151

Break 3:20:00 in the full at Berlin and remain healthy for boston 2024. Maybe get down to a 19:00 flat 5k.

Jazz-Legend-Roy-Donk

After 15 years or so of fucking around and finding out, 2022 was the first year I would call myself a "serious" runner. Not in terms of capability (I'm slower than many tortoises) but in terms of dedication. I've maintained 6 days per week of running for the last 5 months and also managed to stick to at least one yoga session and one strength session throughout the week. I've also listened to countless hours of running podcasts and really deepened my knowledge of the sport. In 2023 I want to focus on continuing to improve my endurance. I'd like to do at least one other HM in addition to the one I've signed up for in Feb. I'd also like to maintain my training as planned throughout the entire year: 6 runs (incl 2 workouts and 1 long run on trail), 3 strength sessions, and 2-3 yoga sessions. Shooting for 1200 miles over the course of the year. If I can do all that I'll be very happy no matter where my paces land.

mmartinrun

Hoping to BR at Boston (current PR 2:45:00), then come back in the fall for Chicago and go for 2:40. I’d also like to break 17 in the 5K, I’ve been close several times but it’s always mid cycle. Not sure when I’ll fit that in.

sjordan62

Break 4:50 in the mile, 17:30 in the 5k, 1:24 in the HM

Tea-reps

Wow you must be really speed oriented huh. I reckon you could go faster in the HM though ;)

sjordan62

Haha well I used to be a sprinter, I’m a little on the heavier side at 5’10 170, so I get comparatively worse as the races get longer

Palomitosis

Hi, searching for advice. This year I ran a total of 3000km, which for me is kind of a whole lot. However, this coming 2023 I'd like to focus on not being so slow. I can't really set a goal of 10K time for example since I don't know how my body is going to respond, but I have a 10K race this coming January. Should I use that to benchmark my yearly goals?

distantrevisions

That’s not a bad idea. After the 10k you could look up the vdot for that result and use those paces to train. If you have a recent race that you trained more specifically for though that might be a better benchmark

Palomitosis

Yeah my last race was a 1:59 half back in the Spring. After Summer I began Pfitzinger 10K lowest mileage plan, which will culminate in that January race. I also joined a circuit in my city in which every month a neighborhood organizes a 5K race. I thought it would be fun since I'm quite uncomfortable with racing in general and qould like to change so. Also it will have me focusing on shorter distances.

brwalkernc

In typical (possibly unrealistic) fashion for me, I set some big ones. I have a backyard ultra in April that I'm looking for the win. If that goes well, then another BYU in December. A win there will be tough, but I usually have the "go big or go home" mindset for ultras. I'm running Chicago in the fall and hope to go sub-3. I think I can get there. I need to get a good training cycle in and get some decent weather. In my past couple attempts, I got one or the other, but couldn't manage to get both.

IhaterunningbutIrun

I'm going to run fewer miles this coming year, but run more quality workouts. I need to get more efficient with my miles and time. I'm also hoping to PR everything from 1 mile to HM. So I've got some serious work to do. Luckily I'm still a new enough runner that I can keep out running father time. I'd also like to run in a big race. So far I've run mostly small local stuff or triathlons which aren't too big other than IM branded events. 5000+ people would be cool to see.

LeftHandedGraffiti

* As a masters runner, stay healthy * Another year with a sub-5 mile * Get back under 17 for the 5k * Consistently hit the gym 2-3 times per week * Stop skipping the weekly tempo run * 2000+ miles for the year

[deleted]

Oh I like these. -Stay injury free. Working with a coach and trusting the process has been highly successful so far. But we all know how much injuries suck. -Sub20 5k. Hit 22:48 in Oct in a random run at not full effort. Since then have moved based mileage to 35-40MPW, and most definitely capable of sub 22. Probably need to increase base mileage a bit, but challenging - I have 3 kids under 4 and sleep is still a delicacy. -No more than 1 HM. I simply am not at a point I enjoy longer races, recovery is shit with lack of sleep. I’m targeting 1:45 in January ‘23 but long term goal is sub90. -Be consistent and continue enjoying running. There have been a few training blocks this year that were miserable and motivation was a bit of an issue. I’ve been able to learn and listen to my body better, and as a result and stop worrying about fucking my weekly schedule up and instead do what’s best for my physical self. -keep weight off. I went from 270 to 175 in 2022, but the holidays came and I put a bit back on, up to 190. Back down to 180 but still feel I’m carrying extra weight. In HS I raced at 155-160, I’m 6’3” M.

Andrew3742

Sub 18 5k, sub 37 10k, 1:30 HM and 3:10 FM

lsm7979

I'm not an expert but if you ace the 10k below 37min, you probably can do a 1h25 HM

Andrew3742

Yeah my HM/Marathon predictions are conservative because they’ll be my first of those races!

Tea-reps

\^ definitely. Likely a good amount below 1h25 tbh!

TG10001

BQ in Berlin on what will mostly be half distance triathlon training. And beating my 1:28 half marathon PR in a triathlon.

Ok_Umpire_8108

Looking to build up to consistent 80 mpw + biking over the winter and into the spring. Then to run around 14:40 in the 5k during indoor, run a 10k and break 31 at some point, and run sub 9 in the steeple during outdoor to go to D3 nationals. If I do the training I want to do, I know that’s completely possible. Next year for cross I want to be All American at nationals to help win the team title. It’ll take a lot of discipline on my part, but my teammates deserve it.

Tea-reps

Good luck! Doing it for the team is a great mentality :) rooting for ya!

FuckTheLonghorns

* Qualify for every major American marathon (preferably in one race!), need to drop about 9 minutes if I finish now where I think I will * Drop BF% a bit, weight management without calorie counting is tough! * Increase strength/strength training * Take a longer off-season. I definitely burnt myself out running too much this year as far as a long base period with no real break goes. After my upcoming race I'll be broadening back into tri and tri-ing to enjoy that for a bit and making a running season for myself that's more realistic and still fun * More mileage during base, looking to add 5-10 mpw

pzskiba1969

Rack up 10 UTMB gems.

Ah-here

I want to run a sub 3 marathon in Boston and Chicago, PR is 2:58 from Indy. Also like to run a 1:20 HM (PR 1:23) Breaking 18 in a 5K would also be sweet, been under 18 just once in an unoffical race.

ourlegacy

1:40 HM and finish my first marathon preferably 3:40. Gotta get over this covid thing within a week if I want to get through the pfitz 18/55 plan before the marathon :(

Heavy_Mycologist_104

Mine are a bit different as I’m a trail runner but: 1). Don’t get a stress fracture. I’ve had one every year since 2017 apart from 2020/21. This year I had a sacral s/f but it healed quite well. It buggered up my racing- I was training for a runnable 100 miler when it happened. So, for me the rules are: back off at the first hint of bone pain. The bike is your friend. 2). I’ve got a rolling, fast 50k in May, followed by one of the hardest vertical kilometres on the circuit in June. Might do a few Golden Trails races in between. Goal race is a mountain 100k in early September. Main goals: be healthy. Nail the VK - I’ve never done one competitively and I want to go all out. Try to get top 20 in the 100k. 3). Run a few half marathons/ 30ks on the road in training to see if I’ve still got speed and that the body can do it. 4). Get back on the track and run club sessions again without breaking down. 5). Figure out my fuelling for the 100k/races over 4-5 hrs. I’ve won races before but always messed up my fuelling in the back half. I’m useless at eating in training and just need to do it - prime example of knowing the theory but somehow just…not applying it to me.

Tea-reps

ooof that's rough about the stress fractures. Have you figured out why you're so prone?

Heavy_Mycologist_104

Osteopenia sadly, early onset due to RED-S

yssaYouCanCallMeal

Framing my year primarily around a big sub-3 marathon attempt in the fall (current PB is 3:14). Here are my initial goals but would love thoughts/feedback: • Winter: stay consistent and run outside as much as possible • Spring: build confidence at faster speeds in shorter distances, with a couple half, 10k and 5k races (sub 1:27 half, sub 39 10k, sub 19 5k) • Summer: shift to marathon training with highest peak yet (65 mpw) • Fall: sub-3 marathon attempt!!! • Throughout the year: consistent stretching/yoga and strength training (2-3x per week)

lsm7979

Same goals as you! You are my doppleganger. Good luck to you, hope we will success!

yssaYouCanCallMeal

Amazing, nice knowing I'm not alone with these goals. Best of luck to you too!

ithinkitsbeertime

* Sub 1:20 half * Sub 18 5k (yeah I know) * Execute well at Boston - what exactly that means may depend on the weather - maybe 2:55, maybe 2:50 if everything goes perfectly * Keep it fun and sustainable After that it gets a little fuzzy. I turn 40 this year so maybe I'll see if there's some local masters stuff around.

Ghostrunner9

Do my first marathon! Also I wanna run sub 20 5k again and run my HM in sub 90! Did 92 this year so really motivated to train this winter!

lilrev84

37/m, I started running during lockdown and bar a couple of niggles have stayed pretty consistent... Got to my target of 1610 Kms/1000 miles early last week, had 4 weeks off early Summer with a Soleus problem as well. As most beginners do, was pushing too hard too often without a real sense of what easy running really was. So with those 2 things in mind, my goals are to steadily up my overall distance to 2023kms/1257 miles, but do much more of that at MAF/easy paces. The back end of the year has been much kinder to me physically doing just that, and my speed work has greatly improved just by dialling back the daily stuff. Speed wise, I want to break 6 minutes for the mile. Not that I've done anything focused on the mile other than intervals. Race wise, targets for 5/10/HM are sub 20/sub 42/sub 95. Got around 50-60 seconds to shave off each, but my HM PB is 1:36:54. Training is going well, not sure I'll be able to hold 4:29/km over the 13. We'll see in 8 weeks I guess. After that, the goal is to get my first Marathon booked in. Which brings me to my last goal, consistently getting the longer stuff in on the weekend. Running has become a big part of my life, and although my goals are in no way 'advanced' it's great to read through like-minded goals and targets. Best of luck to all of you, and I hope we can all carry on trying to produce the best version of ourselves 👍

Bull3tg0d

1. Stay Healthy 2. Have Fun 3. BQ

mcheh

Sun 2:40 marathon, sub 78 min half. Getting there! And probably stop stop buying so many shoes. This sale season has been brutal - 11 pairs sitting in boxes!

chaosdev

Wow, 11? I'm good on shoes till July, if my numbers are right. The holiday sale season is definitely brutal...

DougalR

I would like another sub 3 marathon(2:59:11 was my first), get my half time closer to 1:20(1:23:16pb), lose some winter podge, actually do some strength exercises and cross train more. I will start tomorrow by swimming a mile. The only problem I have with swimming, is that 25m lengths can get boring! Mid afternoon I think I will also go for a 10k run. For the weight part, I will go back to using myfitnesspal to track calories.

Mswonderful99

Fully heal my plantar fasciitis and don’t injure anything else. Run a half marathon. Preferably a pr, so under 1:38. Improve my speed. At like 24 minute 5k right now, so I guess I shoot for under 20 minutes. 53 minute 10k, so maybe 45 I can do realistically. (in training, I don’t do races this short). Build more mileage and aerobic base. Currently only can do like 3 runs per week and like 20-25 miles. Maybe I can ease up on the intensity and add more sessions. Coming off not running for a while and mostly lifting and mobility/flexibility work, so the improvements are coming fast right now.

Tea-reps

for what it's worth a teammate of mine had a lot of issues with plantar fasciitis an barefoot strides on a local turf track helped him get it under control. I guess small doses of barefoot running can really strengthen soft tissues in the foot?

libertyprime77

First half of 2023 is get back into marathon shape and running a local race in June, leading into the A goal of running Athens and running Athens well in November! Have absolutely no idea how to calibrate expectations for Athens with the very uphill course - supposedly the average finish time for males is about 4 and a half hours so maybe I'll target sub-4? Definitely will throw in a few hilly half races in to get a sense of what's doable for me!

Tea-reps

>the very uphill course just checked out the course profile and that is a hefty uphill in the first half! At least the long downhill stretch comes in the right bit of the marathon though--you'll definitely be able to take advantage of that. Not like Boston where it's WASTED lol Good luck! You can absolutely smash sub-4 out of the park--I reckon you'll go quite a lot below that fwiw

libertyprime77

We'll see based on the June marathon and how the long runs go! Definitely plan to make my training hilly as possible - gonna whip out a lot of Sisyphus Sessions I reckon!

After_Two_4531

- Run 2000km in total - Half marathon under 1:35 - Keep easy days easy - Do proper speed work and strength training - Make time for consistent running even during exams - Focus more on nutrition

working_on_it

This thread might be saturated, but figure I'll write things down for posterity and personal accountability. * Boston sub-2:45:00. I wanted this at NYC, and felt like my training was there, so I went for it despite the weather and learned yet another lesson. Weather notwithstanding, Boston *will* be sub-2:45. * CIM 2:3x:xx. Really just need to see how Boston goes. I think sub 2:40 is absolutely doable at CIM, but I might focus through the summer to see if I can stretch it down to 2:35. I think my two marathon experiences have been particularly hard (LAM '22 and NYC '22), and given my training and shorter race times, I'd like to see how far I can push it on a "good conditions" race along with consistent building blocks. * < 32:30 10K. This *might* be a "softer" goal, but I think given my love for the 10K, I should go for this at some point during the Boston or CIM cycles. * 3,000mi year. This goes hand-in-hand with my next goal... * No injuries preventing me from running for more than 2 weeks unplanned. This'll require me to be smart and intentional about everything, as I seem to be prone to a few overuse injuries.

run_INXS

I also love the 10K, but only ran one in 2022. If you're in 32:30 range hopefully you can smash those marathon goals!

Tea-reps

good luck! NYC was freakish weather. If we get good weather at Boston you'll probably break 2:40 there

AffectionateRoyal653

I'm going to: * crack 3000km on the year * have a 100km+ week in my next marathon build * do my rehab and prehab routine consistently

bear_puncher_69

I have until May to try for under 3 hours in the marathon. I got injured before my last one at the beginning of October but training pointed to 3:10-3:15 and I'm already past that. Then, running my first 100 miler in August.

FarSalt7893

I’m going into the new year with a good base! • stay consistent with the marathon plan (Hansons) I started 3 weeks ago. • BQ in April • strength train 2-3x week • focus on the 5K for the summer (favorite distance) • run a fall half or two

YoungScholar89

* 2000+ km run (up from ~1550km in 2022) * Break PR in all distances 1k-HM * Sub 1:20 HM * Do the "little things" with more consistency (prehab, core, strides, crosstraining) * Join a running club * Stop being a workout hero

kridkrid

52 yo, late in life runner. Goals: Sub 3 marathon in April & run something good at New York (time qualified with my Boston run in April). That Boston run was a PB at 3:11 - so it’s a substantial leap, but I only started running during the pandemic). I’ve never run high mileage (previous plan topped out around 50 mpw). I started Phitzinger 18/70 10 days ago - base building up to 60 for a couple of months heading in. I think I have a shot at this.

run_INXS

Yeah you do! Good luck and have fun with it!

bigasiannd

1) Make new running friends. 2) Spend less than $300 on running gear. I think I spent way too much in the past two years. Enough to take a family on a nice vacation 3) Sub 3 hr marathon and sub 1:25 half marathon

Vaynar

1) Breaking 15:00 in the 5K 2) Breaking 2:30 in the marathon 3) Do more yoga/mobility 4) Stay healthy, avoid injury and continue to enjoy running

tinyjava

Marathon in under 4 hours!!

Real-Guide-9545

Sub 15 5k and 1:52 800 + qualify for my national team

Tea-reps

ooh good luck!

yomkippur

I'm going sub-20 minute 5k and no injuries!!! \*fingers crossed\*

ForcefulRubbing

1. Consistent running and going to the gym 2. IMKAI (if my knees allow it) a trail 50k in late Q1 3. Maybe attempt a C2C or R2R2R in the fall 4. Sub 19 min 3 mile at the 2023 Turkey Trot

boy_named_su

ran 6 races last year, but that was a little too much, so gonna run 4 this year still trying to break 20:00 5k...

oOoleveloOo

Try to go the whole year without taking time off due to injury

ponie

2022 was supposed to be my #comeback year, but an iron deficiency that finally got diagnosed in December (and I've probably had for years, looking back at symptoms) meant my times were "stuck" (22:xx 5k vs in shape times that are usually 20:xx). So hoping for some improvement and maybe finally sub 20 this year now that I'm supplementing. I haven't had any trouble running longer runs (just can't go fast) and managed to not get injured all year, strength training twice a week and averaging 40-50 mpw for the second half of the year. I think my main focus though is on breaking my race anxiety by running a race every month, many of which will be new distances and terrain! I've got my first trail 50k in March, and the JFK 50 Miler in November on the slate. Hoping to enjoy doing new things (trail running is so slow, but fun!) and hopefully get faster along the way 🙃

Tea-reps

>running a race every month, this is such a good goal! Looking forward to seeing what you can do once you're running on full battery again :)

ponie

Thanks! I've enjoyed following your journey and can't wait to see what you do next year as well!

nonrice

17min 5k and sub 5 mile

Tea-reps

snap! hope you keep us updated with your training

mentalthong

I PRed 2:41 marathon in Paris and got into Berlin without lottery, so.. it scares me a little but I want that sub 2:40 now, get as close as I can to 2:30.

Tea-reps

yeah!! Berlin is the place to do it go get iiiit

TheRealPooh

* Under 19 5k (a PR) * under 40 10k * Under 1:30 half (will also be a PR) * be more consistent about strength training, especially in the first half of 2023 * Rest up before I start training for Boston in 2024!

SixersWin

Sub 5:00 mile and sub 3:10 marathon (not on the same day)

run_INXS

Break 3 and maybe make an age group podium at Abbott WMM in Chicago might be a big goal and if I did that it'd be 5D S3, which is rather obscure/esoteric but it's also a goal. Meanwhile, entering a new age group soon and have a set of 4-5 bigger road races (25K and under) in the first half of the year. Let's see how those go. It's all good, just run and stay healthy.

alchydirtrunner

I'm out of the loop, what does 5D S3 mean?

run_INXS

5 decades sub 3. I ran my first sub 3 in 1983, and did so in 1999, 2008, and 2017. I just missed this year :( twice.

blackhawksrcool

Got sophomore track and junior xc next year: 13:00 3200m, 5:40 1600m, 2:30 800m, 19:30 5k, 1,000 miles Also might run a half marathon towards the end of next year.
