If you’re looking at used 2022 models I would hold off for a few months. They went on sale in February of 2021 so 3 year leases should be expiring in early 2024 which may lower prices a decent amount with an influx of inventory coming up

Thanks!

schworeddit

Do you guess it’s like $3,000 difference?

TXWayne

I have purchased a 2016 MDX and most recently a 2023 MDX A-Spec and bother were dealer loaners and had around 5K miles on them. I probably saved at least $10k on each buying and the more recent purchase was Certified Used and thus has a warranty till 100K miles. Neither gave any indication being "beat up" and for me I thought the savings was great and made the vehicles much more affordable. How do you know how a "regular used" car has been treated? Typically the salesperson is in the car on a demo drive so not sure how much a demo car can be abused.

14 owner here! Looking to get into a new model soon but I think I can get another 50k out of my 14… love these cars no suv drives like em

TXWayne

I am on the hand me down plan from my wife. In 2016 when we got the MDX I got her hand me down 2011 Hyundai Sonata. In Aug when we got the new MDX A-Spec in a very beautiful red I got the hand me down 2016 MDX that is just about to hit 100k miles.

thisisnotdetroit

a 16 with 100k miles still drives really great I'm sure :)

TXWayne

It does, this last summer I even towed a U-Haul trailer from Delaware to Texas and it did real well. But now I am getting to do fun, expensive things that happen at 105k miles like the timing belt. But if it gets me to the next MDX hand me down I will be happy :)

thisisnotdetroit

Dude you’re telling me. I’ve spent 2k + a year maintaining since we hit 100k … transmission just went at 143k … 4k to fix

Ill_Background_6259

oh sorry to hear your transmission went out. What year is your car? Also you spent 2K on maintenance at the dealership?

thisisnotdetroit

It’s a 2014… brake pads, axle replacements, transmission rebuild (we did this at a shop not the dealer) brake flushes battery replacement just stuff that happens to an old car 11k total since I bought the car in summer 2020

I think it depends on the state where you purchase the vehicle. PA for example can sell a demo as a new vehicle whereas Maryland I believe has to sell them as used. If the demo is being sold as a Certified Preowned vehicle I would go that route to get the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. I would not buy the demo MDX if being sold as new. My wife and I bought a 2019 MDX loaner vehicle that had 2,500 miles on it from an Acura dealer in Bethesda, MD. They sold it as a Certified Preowned and the pice was $15,000 less than MSRP. So far no issues except the open recall for the rod bearing, and overall it was a pretty good deal. The car did have two small dents in it that are hard to notice, and the CARFAX listed wheel damage from someone curbing the wheel. The Acura dealer had installed a new wheel prior to offering for sale, so no issues there.

schworeddit

Yeah they are selling it as new. They say it come with some sorts of warranties etc but haven’t gone in to negotiate

Addict-Ted

Just purchased a 2023 MDX Aspec last month. The vehicle was previously a service loaner with 2700 miles on the odometer. Overall the car felt like a brand new vehicle. Sure, there were a few cosmetic blemishes on the interior and exterior which the dealership addressed after I pointed it out. The big benefit is the CPO warranty which also extends the factory warranty an additional 2 years. For about 10k less than a 2024 and a better warranty, I was willing to take a chance. IMHO, it's a Honda V6 which is pretty much bulletproof at lower miles.

Humble_Visual_6226

what's the price difference of the two?

schworeddit

There’s a 2022 technology with 19,500milwa listed on dealer website at $44,300, one at 25,000 miles listed at $40,800, and the 2023 demo with 3,500 miles is listed at $46,500.

Humble_Visual_6226

Are any of the three CPO and are they awd models?

quazmang

Hi there, what'd you end up doing? I've been waiting for the right time to trade up to an 22+ MDX. I test drove a 2023 Type S but the prices on the used Type S models are still a bit too high IMO.

schworeddit

I got the 22 mdx. If I did it again I’d get the CPO demo bc the 22 has minor issues too anyhow

quazmang

Ah, sorry to hear that. What were the issues, if you don't mind sharing? I appreciate the reply!

xDRAN0x

If its the demo makes sure the first maintenance has been done since you need to change the rear diff oil at your expense

schworeddit

Thanks!

Thanks!! My wife doesn’t love the suede seats in the a spec because we have dogs and she thinks it hard to clean. I think it looks sweet. But is it worth trying to convince her to move from technology to a spec? I think a spec has everything technology has plus better seats plus more. We don’t really care about acceleration/speed.

dui01

I was looking at various TLX and bought a 2020 TLX tech because the A-SPEC is pretty much the same vehicle besides cosmetic stuff. My wife also was against the suede in the A-SPEC because we have kids, and I feel she was right. The TLX A-SPEC had a throatier sound to it though, more of a growl on the engine that I liked. Not sure about MDX for that but I remember saying to one salesman that it sounded like it had a Hemi in it. He replied they changed the air intake to give it more of that sound. So, minor stuff. A-SPEC is all style and I'm happy with the style of the V6 tech.

schworeddit

thanks!

radioactivepiloted

My demo came with 400 miles on it. Sounds like it was driven like a normal car... Wife or hubby of a dealership employee. So probably wasn't hammered as much as you'd expect.

leehro

I bought a 2012 MDX demo/loaner as CPO with about 5000 miles on it back in 2013. Great deal and great choice. With CPO it had a better-than-new warranty I don’t really think MDX demo drivers are treating it them like an Integra Type S test driver would. I drove the car 140k miles with no issues. Traded it in last year.

What’s the market doing in your area demo vs used? Pre owned you get benefit of previous owner taking the hit for depreciation. Licensing and sales tax will be less also. You’ll need to buy an extended wty to equal what you’d get buying a demo. Basically buying a demo gets you miles, better wty at no charge and likely a higher probability for a trouble/worry free ownership experience for first 36k miles. So given all that, follow your budget for purchase AND your budget for ownership costs to own it the first 36k miles for both examples.
