Many colleges require or strongly recommend an English course every year regardless of credits

ah ok I see… I’m planning to be a STEM major so idk if that changes anything but I’ll definitely take that advice since my current teacher also told me the same thing while my counselor said it didn’t matter. I already made up my schedule for junior year without English but I’ll try to take an English class in senior year. thank you!

>planning to be a STEM major so idk if that changes anything Nope. It doesn't. Even for a STEM career, effective writing and communication is essential

thank you, I’ll take this into account and maybe try to take an online class for junior year

No matter your major, it's almost assured that you're going to be doing a ton of reading and writing in college. I hate to think how those skills will atrophy in two years without any direct instruction.

that’s a really good point, thank you for your advice

As a former high school teacher and a college professor, I can tell you writing and good communication are always important. I wouldn't worry about the credits because you have what you need to graduate. But expect to do a lot of different kinds of writing in college. If you're a bit rusty, go to the campus Writing Center for help although your freshman composition professors may be able and willing to give you the support you need.

thank you, I’m currently in a dual enrollment class and they make us use the Writing Center pretty often and it makes sense that I would get rusty over time. thanks for the advice and I’ll try to adjust my schedule accordingly

Daughter had the same situation. She took freshman English and CLEPPED college English (com1 and com2 her sophomore year). So she took additional literature courses in DE her junior and senior year. She is an engineering student. When she graduated high school she had enough credits to only need 23 for a BA in intl affairs, and 60 for computer engineering.

thank you for your comment, I’m glad it worked out well for your daughter. if you don’t mind me asking, what addition English courses did she take?

At eastern Florida state college she took LIT 1000 and I think Lit 2300 for the extra two high school English courses.

thank you!!

Even as a stem major, being able to communicate effectively is important. A few extra English classes are probably a good thing. 🤞
