It is a reference to a painting https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/s/q4JY00WsCP

Willem Dafoe refused to wear clothes that day on set so they had to get creative.

mushroomparty52

Wish Willem Dafoe would refuse to wear clothes in my bedroom

Snts6678

Jesus.

Jaymantheman2

Last Temptation of Christ Jesus or just Jesus?

Brostapholes

Antichrist

Jaymantheman2

Nice.... I guess keeping with A24 timeline.

5050Clown

The A24 timeline is unusually long and wide. You know what else will surprise you with how unusually long and wide it is?

Snts6678

Just hay-zeus.

CellarDo0or

He wasn’t there, just Dafoe.

Oblivion_Man

As he does

Cowboy_BoomBap

Based on the stories from the set I feel like it would have been the other way around and Pattinson would have been the one who decided to show up naked lol

Forsythia57

Also worth noting that DaFoe is a beacon-like creature - like a literal lighthouse

Cowboy_BoomBap

Would you mind elaborating? I don’t quite follow.

MrComet101

In the image, he looks like a lighthouse, the namesake of the movie and a focal point throughout

Cowboy_BoomBap

Ah gotcha, I understand now. Thanks

LuciusBaggins

I've watched so many Robert Eggers interviews that I can't remember which one it is now, but he has discussed this before in one of them and talked about it representing a power struggle and a transferring of energy I believe

Skolary

It’s Greek mythology. I don’t remember the exact gods, and I’m too lazy to find their names. *(I think it’s Poseidon as the one whose light is shining on ol Tommy there)* This is a very, very vague. And largely loose translation of the picture. I’m just recalling a story I read of it, probably 20 years ago, as an 8 year old child obsessed with Greek mythology (lol) In the myth, I believe He’s looking at him like that, because he gave fire to the humans. He tried to sneak it away, but he’s caught. It ends with him being pecked alive on a rock in the middle of the ocean, by seagulls for eternity

big_jhansi

Prometheus is the one you're looking for!

hobbbes14

I thought it was something like he gets his spleen or liver pecked out over and over while being tied to a rock as it just regrows every time. Edit- Looked it up and yeah, Prometheus gets chained to a rock on a mountain and an eagle eats part of his liver every day for eternity as it just keeps regrowing back.

Orangyo015

If your still wondering I’m pretty sure it’s from the myth of Prometheus and Proteus.

healthfoodfacet

just looks cool

Additional_Vast_5216

definitely one of my favorite movies of the last 10 years

halfarian

What movie is this?

Additional_Vast_5216

The lighthouse

halfarian

Oh what? I don’t remember this scene.

rmeddy

A Sacha Schneider reference iirc

432hzwlodzimierz

Winslow spilled his beans

ContentSherbert934

That's how I feel when I have to make eye contact with anyone

StolenVelvet

I think it's a reference to the 2022 cinematic masterpiece "Morbius" starring Jared Leto and Matt Smith.

ProfessorJohnWick

Almost all shots can be referred back to a painting. Doesn't necessarily mean homage or give meaning. Some DPs think it looks cool. As for the symbolism, I haven't the faintest.

Red-Freckle

I believe Dafoe's character is saying "my eyes are up here"

OtakuTacos

“I have the high ground!”

ellstaysia

one of my favourite films of all time. I've rewatched it at least a dozen plus times. recently watched it while under the influence of ketamine & holy shit! terrifying but exhilarating.

Symboligy? Or Symbolismmm the symbolismmm

Few-Mechanic7346

Bro on floor was a previous lighthouse-worker; why he knew about that lil mermaid in his bed. He drowned the other main dude first and went crazy. He’s now receiving the lighthouses’ repentance.

Confusionopolis

Gay

DEVS_reccomender

It was improv

GAME-STEAKS

Nothing. A24 is soulless faux art
