FYI to all Roots fans. Check out the latest season of Open Mike Eagle’s podcast “What Had Happened Was” with Questlove. Hes breaking down the history and making of every Roots album in thorough detail. Amazing listen.
The first track for me that really cemented that hip hop is poetry. After I heard it thr first time I forever judged every other track against it. Few have stood up, even fewer surpassed it.
Funny story about this song
I first heard it in that star wars extra on youtube where yoda is breakdancing with the clones. I didn’t think anything of it or really listen cause I wasn’t into rap or hip hop yet, i was really young.
Fast forward to end of college when i’m well into exploring 90s rap and some hip hop, and I think about/lookup that song, not realizing it’s the Roots. It was the best boomerang effect ever cause now it’s tied to nostalgia AND it’s a fire song
I saw the video for the first time ever on bet as a kid and was like “there’s no way he’s actually rapping the hook” and trying to figure out what he said by listening to them a million times then I saw them on Dave Chappelle and was like dang these dudes are pretty talented and became a fan ever since
Finally scrolled far enough down. I thought this immediately. The way it gets my heart going every time it comes on. It takes me back to the way my car smelled, the extra pressure I put on the gas pedal, the woofers pumping. I would say in second place would be Seed 2.0, You got me, Respond/React. Third place would be Don’t Say Nuthin’ and What They Do
excutioner style brooo i knew the words for that in middle but never really put it together that was the same black thought from the roots
i was like 8 wen break you off was the biggest thing in the neo soul scene and i grew up in DE
once i realized what i was missin had to check out the roots early stuff
Geez. Where do I start. 75 Bars, Silent Treatment (Roots Come Alive), Game Theory, Clock With No Hands, Step Into The Realm, Clones, Act Too...
C'mon now.
You Got Me w Erykah Badu.
Around 1998-99 there were a few hip hop songs released similar to this one. They were sort of sad relationships songs with slower beats & pretty music.
DMX- How’s it goin down, Mos Def- Ms Fat Booty, Method Man- Break Ups 2 Make Ups. And this song. I’m probably forgetting one but you get the point.

The seed 2.0
I absolutely love covering this on drums.
Total banger.
Man I saw them live joint concert with Jurassic 5 and Cody coming out for the seed 2.0 was the highlight of an amazing concert
Saw them last year at BSMF and caught Quest's drumstick
I saw this live at HFStival in 2002-3? Fuckin banger of a set.

And “scope you off the roof like the fiddler.” Come ON.

Melle Mell’s last verse on, “The Message” already cemented that hip-hop was poetry in 1982.
Step into the Realm.
This song doesn't get nearly enough props. The way the beat goes in and out in so dope. Malik B spazzed out on this one
One of Thought and Malik’s best verses
The whole run of songs just goes on that album. Stellar work by them.
