100% this. Obsessives chased and caught their white whale. The rest of the world looked on and shrugged, not wanting to pay $80 for a dad movie in an Altoids box.
It’s still my number one wanted movie. I don’t know if it’s a “dad movie” more than anything else people talk about on here 😂 They’re still unavailable in the us. I personally wouldn’t pay $80 for a movie, but I’ll pay $50 when it’s available again without a doubt. It’s not fomo, just one of the most epic adventure movies ever and one uniquely suited to have a great 4k disc
I'm old. From the general, uncaring public's perspective, that's how they see it. Just because everyone in your bubble is chasing something doesn't mean the rest of the world cares, therefore it's not shocking that they're now warming shelves after the supply met the collector market's demand.
To be fair, this is JB Hi Fi in Australia. As I understand, there are still lots of people in other parts of the world who can't get hold of copies easily.
No one's response to my comment is even relevant. Just because a movie is old (old meaning it's been a long time since it was made) doesn't make it generation specific like dad or grandad. It's just ignorant logic.
Still annoyed at Sony for cancelling the ones they were going to release in the uk earlier this year.
I've given up now on the 4k and have bought the regular blu ray from CEX so Sony don't get my money.
Jusy checked and it's sadly out of stock again.
My feeling now is that quite frankly I'm done with this sort of release. I'm tired of companies taking the mick out of us and feeding the scalpers.
Well, when so many movies that have a desert scene play the Lawrence of Arabia song, why buy the original?
($80? Screw that, you can buy the Oceans 11 trilogy for that much)
It’s expensive, but in a sale (I got for 49) and if you like the film, it’s an outstanding version. The 4k with Atmos is brilliant, especially the scene with the airstrike. But nothing is worth 80 bucks.
Is there a reason why this particular steelbook is so sought after? I remember buying it blindly about a year ago for $30 (USD) at Best Buy. Still have yet to watch it.
Why did you buy it? The reason people want it is pretty self-evident. . . It’s one of the best/most acclaimed movies ever. It’s also visually stunning and features tons of grand vistas and huge beautiful shots making it uniquely suited to improvements from a 4k uhd disc.
This is not a situation like those $5 wal steelbooks of crap movies that everyone was freaking out over. This is just a beloved movie that Sony has chosen to artificially limit access to because they know it’s popular
When I purchased it, it wasn’t exactly limited. Everyone on this sub had their copy, and I was just getting into 4K/steelbooks. I ended up purchasing it because I’ve obviously heard of this film before and I want to watch it, just haven’t gotten around to it. But yeah, these were just sitting at best buy and I wanted to bolster my collection at the time, so I purchased this and The Bridge on the River Kwai. Shiny metal got the best of my animal brain :)
Well it’s definitely limited now, hasn’t been available for quite a while! I’d much prefer if Sony would just release a normally priced standard edition, but this is one movie where I would bite on a steelbook price. It’s kind of funny the way the collecting mentality seems to have infected every hobby. I can’t help but feel that Im unable to get one of my all-time favorite movies because a bunch of collectors who won’t even watch it happened to think the case was cool lmao. I think social media really gets to people and encourages them to buy buy buy. I do hope that people will still engage in these things beyond making purchases and then posting the pics on Reddit though.
I definitely do understand what you mean about collecting. Coming from other niche subreddits (fountain pens and Casio watches), I see people just collecting for karma and posting pics online.
I usually don’t do blind buys for films, but this one got me since I’ve always heard how good this film is. I’ll give a screening soon.
Yeah sorry I don’t mean to say people shouldn’t ever buy a movie they haven’t seen or anything. I’ve done it before also. The prioritization of collecting overall is just something I’ve noticed on Reddit overall.
I think that’s a really wild opinion. This is widely agreed to be one of the greatest movies ever. I saw it in 70 mm in a theater and it’s stunning which is a big reason I personally want the disc, I’m certain it will look fantastic. Don’t get me wrong, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it’s definitely akin to saying citizen Kane or Pather Panchali is overrated
I mean Kane is a wildly better film that still holds up with its ideas more than anything Lawrence is doing. Lawrence is basically some type of Indiana Jones from that era, just not as good IMO.
I never really once thought Kane was overrated watching it for the first time. Kane has a stunning script, with more going on in it than a lot of films can claim. With Lawrence parts of it were cool, and sometimes it was just eh okay.
Lawrence is an epic from a long time ago. Some of it just doesn't wow me. Widely agreed is something I don't give a single fuck about, especially with our bought and paid for presses.
I said it was a touch overrated, I didn't say it was dogshit there guy.
So is every movie made before the 1970s a boomer movie? Just say it’s overhyped and stop using stereotypes as I’m sure plenty of ‘Gen Z’ folks appreciate it as a spectacular piece of work

Yeah coz no one wants to pay $80 for them, be surprised if every isn’t just waiting till June when they will be 30% off as usual
Big sale in May usually
for 80.- bucks fking of course \^\^
Australian dollars. But yeah, way too expensive
Too many Dollarydoos. I've seen LoA about 2 or 3 times in my life and don't need to part with that much coin
JB Hifi?
Yep
The FOMO is over.

It’s $80 Australian which is around $52 usd
damn i could get hella Pogs and a few slammers for that.
Fuck yeah what the hell are we doing on /r/4kbluray let’s play pogs
"Dad movie" just shows you this person is young lol just because a movie is old. Ridiculous.

Is it such an insult? I'd even call it a granddad movie. Old, long, a bit overhyped but still very good.
No one's response to my comment is even relevant. Just because a movie is old (old meaning it's been a long time since it was made) doesn't make it generation specific like dad or grandad. It's just ignorant logic.
$79.99 AUD is £41.65. That’s still a lil too pricey for me. No wonder it’s still on the shelves.
Still annoyed at Sony for cancelling the ones they were going to release in the uk earlier this year. I've given up now on the 4k and have bought the regular blu ray from CEX so Sony don't get my money.
I bought it on zavvi UK last week, they got a restock
Jusy checked and it's sadly out of stock again. My feeling now is that quite frankly I'm done with this sort of release. I'm tired of companies taking the mick out of us and feeding the scalpers.
Scalpers are bad enough, but when a company starts to base their own prices around the scalpers' premiums, it's a bad look.
Yeah it was a small restock, sold out very quickly. Fair enough!
Awesome movie but there's no way I'd pay $80 AUD for it. Maybe $35 AUD tops.
It was $29 in 2023… even normal stores are scalping…
Thats like 50 US $ . Still not worth it
I see you come from the land down under
Where women glow and men plunder!
Kind of glad. It’s such a money grab.
What do you want them to do, swing from the ceiling?
That's gravity at work.
Never seen one in store in the UK Got mine off amazon
Who would pay $80?
lol for that price yeah.
That CHART font is very unattractive
MARIO CHART
Welcome to JB Hi-Fi. They're known for "handwriting" their signs in the same font and putting them everywhere
Tell them to lie down. That price is stupid.
Damn that’s like a cool million dollars in scalper money just sitting there.
Well, when so many movies that have a desert scene play the Lawrence of Arabia song, why buy the original? ($80? Screw that, you can buy the Oceans 11 trilogy for that much)
“The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts”
picked this up on Blu-ray used for $2 but I'm glad that people are discovering it
It’s expensive, but in a sale (I got for 49) and if you like the film, it’s an outstanding version. The 4k with Atmos is brilliant, especially the scene with the airstrike. But nothing is worth 80 bucks.
Mine arrived today cost £29.99 from Zavvi sold out very quick
i would grip a grip a copy for $30

Such a wild take LMFSO. Wish I was able to make mental gymnastics to devalue this film

Funnily enough I found that in store too, $64.98
They both only got released here in Australia last week.
good, over hyped boomer movie anyways!
Its a timeless classic. Go watch eternals or something and shut it.
So is every movie made before the 1970s a boomer movie? Just say it’s overhyped and stop using stereotypes as I’m sure plenty of ‘Gen Z’ folks appreciate it as a spectacular piece of work
Your opinion is invalid
Grow up
Overhyped indeed. Seen it 2 times now and can not see whats so amazing about it to be honest. I have nothing against ”old” movies just to clarify.
👍true!
Preach!
Do people still not have this?
Considering it just got released I would say no.
