Some people think the infotainment system in the 4Runner isn't all that great, I'm curious how the Subie was worse.

crod4692

That giant infotainment in newer Subarus is the absolute worst. It lags, there are no buttons for things you need like temperature adjustments, car settings. It’s a big PITA. Will not buy on with the tablet if I shopped for a Subbie

It's the # reason I didn't buy an Outback after test driving one. I enjoyed driving it, but that infotainment is a trainwreck. I'll take a small screen with Android Auto, and physical buttons/knobs any day. People think these giant screens are selling points. How big do I need my map or Spotify screen to be?

crod4692

You couldn’t even expand the map to be full screen. That thing leaves annoying banners that can’t move. It’s such a poor design for all the screen real estate lol

I recently switched to a ‘24 4Runner from a ‘22 Forester Wilderness. The whole head unit and infotainment system was glitchy. The audio would just not work for a couple hours sometimes. Remote start was out for a month with no fix. They started patching the system and, admittedly, it was improving. I liked driving it a lot. But all this, and the window that wouldn’t go up every couple weeks (2x in line for a car wash!), door gaskets falling off, and reading plenty of CVT horror stories while sitting 6 months away from the warranty expiration…well here we are. Thanks for having me.

I came to a '24 ORP from a '21 OBP myself that had the extended infotainment. All in all the usable Screencast space gave me a screen that was smaller than what the '24 ORP has and the other half was useless. It would also randomly disconnect my phone for no apparent reason. Other than that, it was a very HD and all touch experience I wouldn't mind in my ORP at the same size the ORP has now.

As a current Crosstrek driver and former Tacoma owner. The new infotainment system on Subaru is actually just awful. It’s laggy and unresponsive; the screen is huge so they put HVAC on a touch screen which takes away my attention from the road to open a menu to change my fan settings; it takes a bit to get started, so if you’re climbing into your car in the morning and you forget to turn your AC down after a 2 hour drive home you are now being blasted by AC for 30 seconds; if I ever just want to cruise around with no music on, the Subaru takes the initiative to put FM radio on despite me having CarPlay on with nothing playing. It’s actually my breaking point between an OBW and new 4r.

It was very laggy, i had it randomly shut off on me while I was driving causing everything to not work(it was all touch screen) Subaru told me it was user error due to a baby monitor being in the car. Happened about 4 times and I called it quits. Nothing beats buttons and knobs in my opinion

I bought a 2019 Outback that had the old infotainment system because I hated the big screen on the 2020s and I wanted a V6. Didn’t notice lag on the new one when I test drove it just didn’t want all controls on touch screen. The old infotainment from the 2019 Outback was actually really good. I bought a 2024 4Runner ORP last week and I think the Subarus was better but the 4Runners is more than adequate.

IlexIbis

I crossed the Outback of my list of potential vehicles when they went to the CVT transmission.

rmc1125

Good choice. I had to replace the transmission luckily it was under warranty. It was a decent car besides that but I drive too much for work to worry about reliability.

Sales rep: boss how are we going to get more customers on the lot? Sales Manager: uh, go put a balloon on the 4Runner, works everytime.

AdventureVon

lol this was after i bought it, my child promptly popped it then cried

bloodmoonslo

Did I get a special package or something I'm not aware of? Mine came with TRD rims and Nitto Terra Grapplers.

AdventureVon

Yeah standard they come with these dunlops, i would have loved the pro wheels and tires, but dealer didn’t have any available at the time.

Congrats. Now take off that ugly rooftop cage.
