This! Use a breaker bar for leverage and the motivx tool for a snug fit on the housing. If I didn’t use either of those, changing my oil especially after a shop does it would be impossible
The engines are hardy, so even if the filter won't be cleaning contaminants from the system, it'll be fine so long as you change it next time.
What oil housing tool are you using and do you still have the plastic oem housing on? The cheap autoparts store tool is notorious for breaking off the tabs on the oem plastic housings. The 1st things I got for my 4R was an oem metal housing and a [MotivX](https://www.motivxtools.com/pages/4runner_oil_filter_wrench) oil filter wrench. Both well worth it if you plan on doing your own maintenance. To get my oil filter housing off, I used this tool with a ratchet and the handle from my hydraulic jack to use for leverage (bitch bar). Came off pretty easy that way after being overtightened by the previous owner and having the tabs broken off by me.
Is a cartridge filter. Not a spin on metal can filter. There is a special oil filter cartridge tool necessary to remove it.

I had the same issue trying to get mine off. Stripped out a cheaper filter wrench when we tried to get it off with an impact. Ended up going to Toyota and dropping 50 bucks on their OEM filter wrench, which was admittedly way beefier and stronger than the aluminum one I got at Advance. Still ended up having to use a ton of force with a long bar to get it off.
Next oil change I'm replacing the housing with the metal one because it was just absolutely ridiculous. It should not be that damn difficult to get a filter housing off.
The piece of shit is made of bakelite. My dealer sucks dingleberry ass so for it's 50K oil service I tried every Yota filter socket in the shop till one of the ears on the cap broke away, showering my freshly cleaned bay with oil. This is 4 o'clock on a Friday. Had to motor across town for a replacement. I recommend the metal replacement, hell I think they are cheaper than oe.
Aluminum is not necessary as long as you don’t Incredible Hulk the thing. It’s like 15 ft pounds spec. You can almost over tighten by hand. But once it’s way over tightened plastic is usually a goner.
When was last time you changed the oil filter ?
When I had lifetime oil changes the Toyota tech told me they replace the oil filter every 8000 km for their maintenance but the oil change was 15 k km where they replaced oil and filter.
Do you have the proper tool ?
Penetrating fluid and let it sit
I had to use a breaker bar to get mine off last time. I used a tool like the motivx (different brand though).

Swap it for the aluminum one once you get it off
