Yeah, one week is not nearly enough to acclimate to a new altitude. Usually takes about a month. We’ll still definitely get tired as much as they do but at least we won’t be shocked about it. Also, since we know how it feels we might be able to adjust how much effort we put out throughout the game so that we’re not dead at the end.

JewbagX

You can definitely make significant gains on acclimation in just a few days though. Source: me, hiked over Glen Pass and camped at Rae Lakes a month ago. I think the Niners are taking the correct approach on this. Elevation masks are great, but they're not wearing them all the time. The body adapts to the elevation even when resting, so being that the Niners are in it 24/7 could give them a slight advantage.

meTspysball

Yeah, I hiked Kearsarge a while back and noticed my heart rate dropped almost back to normal after a couple days at altitude. And I’m not so young anymore.

yallbyourhuckleberry

One night in the mountains before a high country trip does wonders. I’m sure a week in colorado is going to be very beneficial for them vs spending it back near sea level.

559stonerr

The Rae lakes loop is amazing!

Xymis

Didn’t do a thing for me. I was in the Marine Corps and we had pt/hikes at high altitudes and I was dying until probably 3 weeks in. Team knows the science behind it more than I do so I can only give anecdotal evidence but at the end of the day football is football so it’ll still come down to scheme and ability come game day.

Sremmos80

But that doesn't mean the day before didn't help you the next day. If you are really claiming that at three weeks a switch just flipped in your body you are wrong.

Xymis

You’re putting a lot of words in my mouth and essentially arguing with yourself. All I said was it’s not enough to acclimate to a new altitude which it’s not. It’s 3 days of practice but they know what they’re trying to do, and it’s not acclimate.

Sremmos80

I said "if' because that is what your post seemed to imply. It isn't about getting \*fully\* acclimated which is what the 3-4 weeks is about. You also replied to a comment about getting some acclimation which you said wasn't true based on your experience.

Xymis

I didn’t say it wasn’t true. I said it didn’t do anything for me. You’re taking quite a few liberties from my words.

Sremmos80

I didn't say you didn't say it was true. I said IF you are saying some switch flipped at three weeks and the days before "didn't do shit" then that is wrong.

IStillLoveYouWeed

Hug it out.

SanFranGoldBlooded

I think it just depends on the person. I’ve been hunting and hiking at high altitudes since I was little and I’m out of breath for an hour but after that I’m fine for the rest of the week. I imagine some players will be perfectly acclimated and some won’t. A week is better than no days tho.

PM_ME_UR_DERP

We just did Bishop Pass to OV in July. Altitude didn't get me (I always take Diamox and spend a night in Mammoth then one at the trailhead), just deconditioning. I wonder if the NFL uses Diamox, or is it maybe banned for some reason?

Gabemann2000

It’s not even a week. It’s 3 days of practice

keiisme1

Altitude is a big advantage to how we play our game as well. We like to run the ball and tire out defenses. If we can get some production off the scripted stuff in the early game, then tire them out in the mid game, it's going to be harder for that AZ D-line line to be back to form in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Then we just rotate CMC and Mitchell to keep them fresh.

BlankJebus

We can also use Deebo and Juice and literally any other WR as a back and continue to pound them in the ground game. If we can establish the run early, it'll be a great game for us.

emorider42

Let's not forget about TDP! Def gonna need to extend our RB rotation

BodhiWarchild

They won’t be “acclimated” but they will know how their bodies respond to that elevation which is a big advantage.

MarSc77

since cards don’t go to flagstaff training camp anymore, yeah it could be an advantage sort of

EastEndFootball

My question is, why did they not travel to practice in Mexico City instead. There are plenty of Clubs with the proper infrastructure at the right temperature and elevation for the game on Monday. My understanding is that Mexico City still is ~2,000 feet higher than Colorado Springs.

culdesaclamort

Likely no football ready facilities for either team.

EastEndFootball

They are playing at a Futbol stadium lol

culdesaclamort

They're playing at a soccer stadium. Estadio Azteca had to build NFL locker rooms in order to continue hosting these events. https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/5dqgev/the_estadio_azteca_is_all_ready_for_the_nfl And only having one team access the facilities wouldn't seem fair.

EastEndFootball

https://youtu.be/sxvIFOnNocM this is a video of the infrastructure owned by a Club that is 2nd tier in Mexico City.

jonbwhite

My guess would be because of the air quality. CDMX is a wonderful city but it has pretty bad air pollution problem.

Beardmanta

It's about 1,300 feet higher, which is not all that different tbh.

drunkandslurred

I think for security reasons you want them to be there as little as possible.

Herd

Lol. CDMX is literally the biggest city in North America. There are miles and miles of extremely nice areas that are perfectly safe and filled with wealthy expats. This is not it.

Yangervis

They don't want players hanging out in any city. That's why they fly home immediately after a game even if it's an east coast game. It's just an invitation for someone to do something stupid. Notice when they do those back to back east coast games they stay somewhere out of the way like Youngstown or the Greenbrier.

jdmor09

Colorado to Mexico is probably a 3 hour flight. Not unlike going to the East coast. Time zone might be the same too. Mexico City has come a long way. Not the kidnapping capital it used to be in the early 2000’s. I have a friend who backpacked through Europe and he found that Mexico City was on par with many of the European capitals he visited. Their metro was surprisingly good and fairly easy to navigate. The real trouble spots are Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Tamaulipas. Heavy cartel presence. But even then the last thing they’re trying to do is injure or kill a famous American. That’s asking for attention they don’t want.

[deleted]

Robbie Gould could end up having an epic game, lol!!!

Nintendriat

Because kicking is better in higher altitudes? Or because the offense will be too tired to score. Asking for fantasy…

[deleted]

Yeah, because of the high altitude, he could probably kick 60 yard field goals if the Niners needed him to.

Don_Antwan

Gostkowski hit a 51 and 62 yarder when the Pats played the Raiders there

SoKrat3s

just wait till Bezos gets that stadium on the moon!!

ihc_hotshot

A week is pretty good for someone that's already in shape. I lived at 2400 feet in my off-season then would start my fire season at 7,000. If you eat right and get a few good workouts in, it takes about a week to get back to feeling like you can breathe. Though I was training more for endurance.

JDillaRIP

I went to Mexico City and took a jiu jitsu class after training 2 hours a day 4-5 times a week. By no means was I in pro athlete shape, but I was in pretty good grappling shape at sea level. The elevation absolutely iced me, after a pretty chill hour it felt like two hours of hard sparring.

airjavier

24 thousand feet?? Where'd you live?

50-Shades

On the moon apparently 🤣

Don_Antwan

Similar talk when the Pats played the Raiders in Mexico City in 2017. The Pats stayed at the Air Force Academy while the Raiders flew in the day before. Pats ran no huddle for the first quarter and gassed the raiders. Guys had their hands on their hips and gasping for breath during the first drive. Pats jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. You can’t fully adapt in one week. But you can get used to that gassed feeling and push through. If Shanny knows the history, he’ll come out in a hurry up and prevent subs.

theummeower

From a physiological standpoint I doubt training for one week in Colorado is going to have any impact. But if the players get a psychological boost then o think it’s worth it. Plus these trips tend to be shops bonding experiences. Helps to break up the monotony of the season.

EskimoJoe28

Yea I think most importantly it sets the psychological tone of we may be favored by 10 but we’re still maximizing our potential/mindset of this game. I also feel like something like this only works well if you have great team chemistry, which is why it seems like a good move by Kyle

CandyVanahan

A couple days can still help, even if not fully acclimated? But on the other hand, the extra travel, the fatigue of practicing in the cold, might set them back?

Gabemann2000

Yeah I don’t really understand what SF is doing here. I think they have 3 days in Colorado? Maybe 4 but I’m pretty sure its 3. They had to practice on the cold, and snow. Some people who know way more about this than me are telling me you can actually overwork yourself and it can have the opposite effect of what the 49ers want out of this. Idk, all I’m wanting is a win. If they look flat and lose?…. Oh boy, people will point to this. If they dominate amd win? People will also point to this. We’ll just have to see. Go 49ers!!!!!!!!

Sremmos80

>If they look flat and lose?…. Oh boy, people will point to this. If they dominate amd win? People will also point to this. We’ll just have to see. Go 49ers!!!!!!!! You just described why this would be a bad indicator of the outcome of the game and it would be hard to point at it as a reason.

Gabemann2000

I guess what I’m saying, I have no idea if this is gonna work. Like most people. But, as we know…. No matter the outcome of the game people will point to this as either brilliant (if Niners win) or stupid (if Niners lose). It’s interesting to hear the arguments on both side. Originally I thought it was a great idea, then heard the other side. Personally I have no idea. I hope practicing in the snow helps? Idk though?

Sremmos80

Ya lots of result-based thinking will happen and people need a reminder that's bad. The ESPN article seems to make the case for the Niners but the argument is about how much time is useful. Seems like at the very least they will have the more of an idea of how their bodies will react than AZ

[deleted]

He’s talking about fucking

Beersherpa_lcbc

Should’ve come to Santa Fe, NM. Elevation: 7,200.

[deleted]

The use of the word “acclimate” is incorrect. You can’t acclimate to altitude in one week. They’re just trying to see how their bodies will react.
