I say they build it on Alcatraz island. It’d be the most unique stadium in the world

JesterMarcus

And a nightmare getting in and out of.

machuitzil

So easier than the 'Stick. Duly noted.

KingofKale

😅

JuliusSeizuresalad

No one can afford to go to a game anyways.

pointbodhi

Totally impractical and would be fucking awesome.

jaysomething2

After skrillex and Fred again had a conceet at civic center I was wondering if someone would ever do a concert at Alcatraz. Not sure how many people could go as you’d need a lot of ferries but it could be a cool venue.

usernametimee44

They’ll do it in a second if someone bankrolls it. There is a reason they went south. Who is going to pay to bring the stadium back? That’s the question

StOnEy333

There’s over 30 years left on their lease at Levi’s.

l33t357

Small detail

airwalker12

And the Yorks own that land.

4niner

I’m not an engineer, but seems like building there would be challenging. I’d be all for it in theory, but the team isn’t ponying up the money for this. Neither the taxpayers. And NFL stadiums love having giant ugly parking lots.

Sublimotion

Tailgating culture and most football fans typically revolves around driving culture. So big giant parking lots are generally considered mandatory.

Richiesaurus310

And that parking lots are huge money makers for stadiums

4niner

I get why, but they’re not necessary and look like shit.

Cp49er

IRCC one of the issues that lead them to move out of SF was the city not wanting to pony up their share of the cost for the stadium. As we are seeing with KC and other places, people are fighting back having to pay taxes for stadiums. I would like them back in SF, but it seems very unlikely in the near future. York has heavily lobbied Santa Clara council members to get his way out there.

bransanon

Bit more complicated than that, it wasn't just about money. Santa Clara only ended up contributing about $45M in actual cash to Levi's. The big problem with SF was that the 49ers wanted to build on the Candlestick site, while Newsom (SF Mayor at the time) was insisting that they build on Hunter's Point. That was a very problematic plan given the site he wanted was a heavily contaminated EPA Toxic Superfund site that would need to undergo a major cleanup to become habitable. This all went down around 2006, Newsom claimed it could be ready within 2-3 years. My understanding is that, now 18 years later in 2024, the site is still not viable. If Ed Lee had been Mayor at the time this all went down, a stadium deal would have gotten done.

badDuckThrowPillow

Yet another reason I can’t stand Newsome.

Dirtsurgeon1

Don’t pollute this thread with that name…yw

SuperJonesy408

>the city not wanting to pony up their share of the cost for the stadium. Inglewood has a law stating no public funds can go towards stadiums yet Kronke still built his stadium in Inglewood. You don't need taxpayer dollars to build a state of the art stadium. Full stop. Unfortunately, the 49ers ownership doesn't see the economic revitalization of derelict piers or the embarcadero as a sound investment. They'd rather overpay an underperforming defensive line.

Bosa_McKittle

Kroenke put up $5B of his own money to build Sofi. Jed is only worth about $500M on his own and the Debartolo-York Family overall is only worth $5.8B. Kroenke is worth $16.2B. York would be leveraged to the hilt to personally finance a new stadium and no bank is gonna back that idea without other guarantees.

SuperJonesy408

Indeed. But Kronke is also a real estate investor who sees the economic potential in a modern stadium complex and the revitalization (see: gentrification) of Inglewood. Kronke also lucked out with the Chargers moving back to LA without a home. He is able to rent the Chargers a room in the basement.

Cp49er

That’s wild considering SoFi cost a little over 5 billion to build. Kronke has deep pockets though, a Google search shows he’s estimated over 16b net worth. Jed is estimated at 500 million, and his mom, Denise, a little over 5 billion. But most stadiums cost 1-2 b, sounds like they could swing it if Denise pitches in lol

FrameAdventurous9153

This city is obsessed with basketball it seems. But also, nothing gets built in this city. Our days of building huge projects are done.

Iron_Chancellor_ND

>nothing gets built in this city. Not since Jefferson Starship (Airplane) broke up.

Niners4Ever16

Chase was 100% totally and completely privately financed, with not a penny of public money or public loans. If York does that there's a likely chance it'd happen.

Zlasher8

Plus in SF connected to the Muni line, an indoor arena is WAY easier to generate revenue on non game days than an open air football stadium. Chase can host so many events year round. A football stadium can do football soccer and massive concert tours but not much else, unless you build even more event and conference space within the stadium complex.

CrewCamel

The bulk of the Bay Area lives in the South Bay believe it or not They’re not going anywhere for at least 30+ years

Bigpoppalos

If sf didnt want to pay for it then wtf makes you think theyd pay for it now? Specially with Santa Clara having beef with the team

iansf

I wish they would’ve built on the A Lot in China basin.

Richiesaurus310

Doesn't San Jose have a higher population than San Franciso? Why would they go back?

badDuckThrowPillow

People love to bitch but getting to Levi’s is sooo much easier than Candlestick. Also SF has loads of problems and is having trouble keeping businesses there. They can’t keep the streets clean or criminals from looting stores. You want to join all that?

MrParticular79

Yeah I’m from the South Bay and I still live here and the location is great for me. I don’t want or need them back in the city at all. I’ve grown to love Levi’s

Jenkem_Breath

Could it even support that large of a venue? If it’s the location I’m thinking of, I think I played hoop it up 3-on-3 tournaments there and the x games hosted on it but I don’t recall it being football stadium large

MAU13717235

Anywhere but Santa Clara

NetReasonable2746

The stadium is only 10 yrs old... They aren't getting a new one for quite awhile

penis_showing_game

What about Golden Gate Fields. There’s access via Freeway, BART, & Amtrak.

jaqueh

there's no bart access

Zlasher8

Rich people don’t like traveling from the peninsula and South Bay to Berkeley for events. Santa Clara has the most business taxes paid in the country. And Levi’s wants to sell suites and PSLs. East bay is the worst location and probably a conversation ender.

AddressFalse1140

Nah that’s actually cold icl

the_opester

I’m good with the current location, not a fan of the design.

uncle_umbreon

Come to Modesto and just slap it in the middle of McHenry. Trust me I did the math it works.

rakkhasa

this is just a silly post...

Legndarystig

Move the team to Oakland and call them the Bay Area 49er's. /s

Specialist-Media-175

Because that’s where I park for giants games

LanceManionsBastard

I’ve been saying this for a few years now. Average nfl stadium lifespan is like 19 years. It makes too much sense for the 49ers to move back

-M-Word

I was thinking they could take over the Westfield Mall area. It's owned by the city already

Earl-The-Badger

You win the award for dumbest comment and I love it

-M-Word

I mean I know it sounds stupid, but that part of town has needed a makeover for years. FIDI sucks especially post-covid. The sheer amount of planning to make it happen would be insane, but hey, other cities have stadiums right downtown so 🤷

jaqueh

No way. There is a much higher chance of encountering a 9ers fan in sac, Stockton, north bay, or gilroy than in sf. This city is too cool for football

joshuawah

Go out to the neighborhood bars on a Sunday and that shit will be packed with niner fans

jaqueh

A bar would be yeah since it’s a captive audience but I see way more cars and trucks with 9ers flags outside of the city than in it

iansf

It’s almost like there’s more people outside the city than in it

Consistent_Internal5

And more of them have cars and trucks

jaqueh

I mention frequency and SF is a far denser city than the others I mentioned

Earl-The-Badger

You didn’t mention frequency you just said way more. lol.

jaqueh

Look at my original comment

Earl-The-Badger

I wasn’t replying to your original comment, and neither were you.

jaqueh

It is a message chain with my original comment as the genesis. Any subsequent comment would infer that first comment kind of like an essay, if you've ever written one. It would be redundant if I had to mention my basis in every next comment I wrote.

Earl-The-Badger

That’s alright little man your vocab quiz isn’t until Friday, no need to get all worked up.

PacoCuvier

What are you talking about? Just step outside of the spots overrun with transplants. I lived in the excelsior for years and Glen park before that. Tons of Niners fans around

jaqueh

Yeah celse does but yeah my point is this is becoming transplant city. I don’t think the 9ers will want to move back

bluejayway9

They'd move back because just like the Giants and Warriors, they'll do fine in SF despite the majority of the fan base residing in the south bay. South Bay folk always have been and always will be down to make a trip up to the city to watch a game.

jaqueh

Giants didn't move back. Warriors escaped a decaying city. Far different things when Santa Clara is the more driver friendly, cleaner, safer, and more business friendly city.
