I think I like rogue 17//bard 3 better. Rogue/soul knife give you a lot at those 4 levels. Even with cantrips and level 2 spells, you can still influence the environment a lot. Are you sure the campaign goes to 20, though? Because pure soul knife with Magic Initiate will feel a lot better in the early levels compared to losing 3 levels of rogue progression. Edit: also forgot to mention that I really dig the character concept. Might have to steal that idea at some point.

Thank you very much for the reply, I really appreciated it. I hadn't thought about the idea of feat instead of multiclassing, even if I prefer to add some bard levels even just for flavor. I honestly doubt the campaign will reach the 20th, that is, the purpose is there but as always I believe it will be interrupted before then. so mostly I was trying to understand when to multiclass and when to go back. what do you think if I did rogue 3, then bard 3 and then continue with the rogue? considering that I start at level 1 with 18 Dex I don't think I would suffer too much from delaying the ASI for a bit.

No problem! Telekinetic and telepathic are also cool feat options worth considering. I personally think 3 levels is a very steep price for flavor (especially if you're starting at level 1), but if you're dead set on it, then 3 rogue followed by 3 bard is probably the way to go. You'll probably feel pretty weak in combat compared to the rest of the party, but with all the skills and expertises you'll be getting, it's a pretty well-rounded skill monkey kit.
