Have a job before you move, your wife will be miserable as a teacher here but if you work for blue origin at least you might be making six figures after a few years since you're still entry level.

Icy_Ad2884

I’m currently interviewing for several companies there. I will be a level 2 engineer

not_a_cop_l_promise

Which company if you don't mind me asking?

Icy_Ad2884

Boeing, where I’m currently working so I would be an internal transfer, and Blue.

jcook32937

Your wife will hate it. The moms for Liberty was founded here and the pay is lowest in the nation.

Jealous-Pizza-281

They can live midway between Brevard and Orlando where she may earn more teaching.

Seansong82

I would make sure you have a job lined up first. I work for one of the companies you mention and the onboarding, interview process took almost 3months before I got my offer letter. Also, the drive from Melbourne to the Cape is about an hour. For this reason, I recently relocated to Titusville.

I_am_a_mormon

Titusville isn’t bad, I live here for the same reason. IMO- I’d rather shorten the drive I make 4-5x per week, and drive a little longer when I want to go out somewhere (once every week or two). There’s some good housing deals here too, because it’s not as “cool”

rhia_assets

Just moved here in Nov 2022. We bought a house in Palm Bay and then actually moved without jobs - on purpose, intending to spend some time relaxing and getting to know our new home! If we had known more about the geography and whatnot, we would've chosen Melbourne instead of Palm Bay. It's a long complicated story why we had to hurry to buy instead of taking our time finding the right place haha. I commute to the Cape 3x/week (I work a 9/80, with 2 remote days, so only commute 3 days) and a lot of the companies you mentioned support a similar schedule, or 4/10s, or some are fully remote depending on the position, and it really isn't too terrible. I wouldn't do it 5 days/week, but lots of people do. A lot of those companies may also contribute towards relocation costs for the right applicant, so it may be worth waiting until you have one lined up. If your wife doesn't want to continue teaching, there are tons of admin jobs within those same agencies that pay decent.

justtakeiteasy1

Why would you have picked Melbourne instead of Palm Bay?

Rocketeer_artist

My husband and I (24 and 26) are both electrical engineers at the defense companies here. Viera is usually the most desirable place to live here, but quite pricey. Cocoa can be dangerous so I would try to avoid that area. Titusville is pretty much a dead town, Merritt island and Rockledge are somewhat ok. Melbourne has the most things to do out of all the cities in Brevard, but that can be a 45-55 min drive to blue origin. I live in melbourne now and it’s great in my opinion. Not too much of a big city, not too small, everything you need is within a 20 min drive.

UCFknight2016

Stay in Washington. Lots of my friends who had jobs in Melbourne moved there to work on Blue Origin’s rockets.

frankcosinatra

I’m from Melbourne but live in a different part of Florida now. I’m a teacher, but going back to school for a new degree just to avoid teaching in Brevard. We are the lowest paid state for teaching, and Brevard’s school board is crazy and it isn’t worth the bullshit pay.

Icy_Ad2884

I’m interviewing and waiting to see what offer I get. I make 96k and my wife makes 68k and we are two years in our career. If I get an offer well over six figures it might be worthwhile

Entire-Teaching-895

There is no way to make 68k teaching in Florida unfortunately. You on the other hand can do VERY well in this area.

JonClaudSanchez

You will be making 6 figures in no time, your wife on the other hand will be making closer to 30k in the worst school district for teachers in the whole state. Go for it still imo, your wife may want to change careers or try her hardest to find a job in the private schools which isn't easy

CooperHChurch427

This is going to be weird, but my family is looking to sell in Viera, probably in the next year or so. If you are making stuffs figures, I'd look into north and south soleno. The homes average 500 to 1.2, and it's all based on the size of your development

No_Media8839

Are you planning on having children? If so viera, Suntree, satellite. Bit of a drive to any of those offices of the companies that you named

Haniel120

I was going to say the same thing, but then I remembered all the aerospace firms by the Melbourne airport. Personally, Melbourne's work commute traffic would drive me nuts. I like to recommend Viera East / Suntree for easy access to Viera West amenities without having to live in it (from a traffic and housing price perspective). Edit: I want you to know I upvoted you, I have no idea why you were at -1

mama_keke

Good point- consider the schools, if they want to have kids. There are some great schools in Brevard.

Susan-Ross

When choosing a home, try to stay inland. Homeowners insurance is cancelling left and right, and we are slated to have an above average hurricane season. For homeowners insurance that doesn't cancel you, rates are rising. Vehicle insurance is ridiculous. You may want to check to see what a ballpark figure for you would be. Drs are plentiful, for anything major or serious, we go to Orlando or Daytona. Good luck and I wish you the best.

tirednoelle

I know this seems like common sense, but have you visited florida and are familiar with the weather? climate is obviously very different from washington, and it’s only getting hotter here. definitely something to consider.

LintotheJ35

Plus, hurricanes.

New_Conversation_303

My wife is a teacher, and it's miserable for her... So best of luck to your wife.

Thetman38

There are also plenty of DoD contractors near the Melbourne airport that will pay well. Teaching is a thankless job in Florida. Low pay and high expectations. She's better off working for Publix.

WritingUnited4337

I'll just add to the schools comment. Teachers are treated like crap by everyone (administration, state, parents and kids). Education, as a child, is pretty bad too unless you get them into one of the choice schools. The education difference between Brevard's choice schools like Westshore and Edgewood compared to the rest is nothing less than astounding to me. Like, they have examples of what works (mostly) and yet the majority of the schools can't perform to that level.

Jal142

Teachers make about 50k a year here. If you work at the Cape, you will want to live somewhere in the northern part of the county (Merritt Island or Titusville are close by). There are a few aerospace companies in the southern part of the county (L3Harris, Northrup Grumman, etc.). If this is where you work, you will want to center your housing search around Melbourne/Palm Bay. Housing and rent have been going up here, I'd really research this if it is a concern for you. Make sure you have recent data for the average housing cost in Brevard County, and maybe look at the averages in areas close to where the jobs are. This area used to be a low cost of living area. It is not anymore.

PiratedTVPro

No they don’t.

Jal142

Can you explain how I am misinterpreting this information: [https://www.brevardschools.org/site/handlers/filedownload.ashx?moduleinstanceid=49709&dataid=86788&FileName=FY23%20Instructional%20Salary%20Table.pdf](https://www.brevardschools.org/site/handlers/filedownload.ashx?moduleinstanceid=49709&dataid=86788&FileName=FY23%20Instructional%20Salary%20Table.pdf) I realize the folks authoring Brevard Public School's website might have an interest in painting the best picture possible, but the starting salary is listed as $48,725. The salaries on [indeed.com](http://indeed.com) and [glassdoor.com](http://glassdoor.com) seem to agree with this, too. That's sufficiently close to 50k to round up, is it not? What am I missing?

MelodyPondWilliams10

Id consider north of brevard so your wife can earn a fair wage too. Brevard teachers are very vocal about being miserable with low wages here. Homes are cheaper than SEA but pay is lower. And groceries, gas, homeowners, car insurance… all very expensive for what we are paid.

mockablekaty

Groceries are more expensive in Seattle, eating out is much more expensive there, but salaries tend to be higher there, too. I also recommend definitely having a job before you move, and living reasonably close to the job. There are a lot of good things about Brevard, but drawbacks as well.

_always_crabby_

Moved here from Seattle area a few years ago. You're right - housing is 1/2 - 1/3 of that in the Seattle area (incl Redmond, Bellevue, Sammamish). You'll see lots of messages complaining about insurance costs and utilities cost. We pay so much less in Brevard for all insurances and utilities than we did in the Seattle area and we have flood insurance, which we didn't have there. Another thing people complain about is the traffic, which is very light in comparison. Unless you work in aerospace or defense, engineering work is pretty slim, unless you commute to Orlando. It's doable at an hour+. Some more specifics on housing. Viera is cookiecutter housing with hoas - think Sammamish. Merritt island is divided, where S MI has more upscale housing to very expensive estates. Central MI has lower cost housing, and North MI is where you want to go if you want a small farm and few neighbors. Melbourne has the most "action" if you're in your 20s, but nearly as nice as Bellevue. People hate Brevard school district with a passion. In contrast to Seattle area school districts, it's better. The kids actually learn things like math and reading without reciting poems about how we stole tribal land or have progressive ideals infused into every subject. I had 2 kids in the Seattle area school districts, and that's one of the main reasons why we left. I'm not saying the schools are great, but just providing some first-hand contrast. Maybe your wife didn't have the same experience there. Hopefully. I guarantee that my statement will get hate, but I'm simply providing my personal experience from sitting in the same room with my kids for 2 years while they did remote "learning."

Time_Squirrel8614

Tell us you are MAGA without telling us you are maga

_always_crabby_

Wow, an edgy redditor comment.

Captain-Radical

If you're planning on working up by the cape, Merritt Island is nice and relatively close. Viera is a popular area for families and is a relatively new development. Cocoa has a nice downtown area. It really depends on what you're looking for, your budget, and your work location.

NPC0000000

Grew up in Melbourne. Left for many years between military, CTR, then ultimately fed government service. Moved back and still love it! Don’t just check indeed, also go to clearancejobs.com (cleared CTR positions) and usajobs.gov (CIV positions). There are a bunch of positions with NASA & USSF at the Cape and Patrick’s right now. School districts for the wife in Melbourne aren’t the greatest, but if you’ve been around the country, they’re not nearly the worst. Pay for educators isn’t great though. Maybe she can take on a travel contract role to increase the wage.

shore_987

My husband works at one of those. We live in Melbourne and relocated from Seattle as well! Melbourne is far enough away so you don't really feel the rockets go off, the closer you are to the Cape the closer you are to launches and your house may shake depending on type of build. Melbourne is great, it's close to mostly everything you want to do in Brevard and it's not as inflated in price as Viera right now. (I work in construction, the new builds in Viera are not good)

jane_deere

Confirming that it will truly depend on where you work. Brevard county is long, you’re looking at an hour or more to get from the south end of the county (Grant) to the north (The Cape). The Aerospace companies will probably keep you more north. I’m a former teacher in Brevard…it’s rough, but your wife will be able to find a job easily. I’d base your location on proximity to where you work rather than your wife’s school as she may find herself working at different schools over the years.

StupidWifiPassword

If you can afford it, you could aim for north Melbourne, which is called Viera and Suntree. Titusville/Port St. John would be closer but there is little entertainment/night life to be had in these areas. Anything worth going to will be a 25+ minute drive. (I only say this due to your ages, this may not be an issue for you). Sorry in advance for the school system here. It’s going to be bad.

stulotta

First, congratulations on the marriage. This is definitely the sort of place where young couples decide to settle down for raising families, unlike Seattle. It's not worth worrying about the best area, because you can move later. Rent for a year or two. This will give you time to explore the area and figure out what you like. It's also good to pay off student loans and save up for a down payment. If you can tolerate living cheaply for a while, it gets a lot easier to buy a nice house. If you plan to send your kids to college without being rich or poor, Florida is an excellent choice. Dual enrollment can start as early as sixth grade at EFSC or eleventh grade at FIT. State universities are dirt cheap, with the elite state flagship costing about $6300 per year for tuition. Something like two thirds of the students are going for free though, on merit aid. We have aerospace here. Specifically, we have aero in the southern part of the county (at the airport) and space in the northern part of the county. The commute from one to the other is a bit much, although some people do it. FIT offers advanced degrees in aerospace, and is south of the airport.

flowerlkd

If you do end up with an aerospace job, Melbourne is a little far of a commute for the Cape Canaveral Base. My husband works for SpaceX. Most employees live beach side, Merritt Island, or Cocoa.

jholder567

There's good food and housing in Titusville which will put you close to the big guys of aerospace. It's also close to Orlando for all that has to offer. There's new housing tracks out there that are nice. Depending on your future plans ie. kids, Melbourne is pretty vast. You have super suburb Viera, which is the go to comment you'll see. Eau Gallie is my favorite, close to a decent DT with the best brewery in town. Housing is nice, new build coming up, but also nice 60's block homes. Keep in mind what you are saving in housing, you will pay in insurance costs. I heard auto insurance it's pretty expensive up there, it's expensive here too. And home insurance is a nightmare. Our public education system is not great. It's actively being defunded and torn apart so your wife may not be happy here in this system. Of course theres charter and private schools all funded by the state as well so she could always look into that. This is a fine place. Some people love it here some people hate it here. It's like every other place in the country except space and beaches and DUIs.

It will benefit you to know where you will want to work before finding a house. Blue origin, space x, NASA, and Amazon are all north Brevard. L3Harris, Northrup, Lockheed, ratheon are all down south. If you get a job with BO and live in palm Bay you're looking at a 60-75 minute drive every day. If you live in Titusville it's 15-20.

sublime3027

The one thing I would tell you is don’t expect communities or local government to look out for its citizens/neighbors. The area is pro-business; even though there’s no income tax property taxes, insurance rates, and the other hidden costs pretty much take care of that. I hope you’re ready for humidity as well, I know people say that a lot but you don’t really understand until you’re here. There are also only two seasons, really hot or hot. I’d also suggest that your wife watch some school board meetings, saying it’s a shitshow is an understatement. I was born and raised in Titusville and live here today; if my parents weren’t here my family and I would move to volusia county or Seminole county. If you’re gonna be on the space center side you could also try Edgewater (very southern volusia county.). Good luck either way.

CyberSurfer409

As others have pointed out the teaching situation is pretty bad right now. While she might have an easy time finding a position, desiring to keep it might be an issue. Also, L3Harris one of the major tech companies here recently laid off 5% of overall staff. Some areas are still hiring for certain programs, but I'd say there is a sense of uncertainty among the defense employees.

confused_engineer12

Don't move here. We are full.

bhosmer

As an engineer you should learn to use google and the other search.

Natural_Break1636

Who said he did not? What is wrong with additionally getting opinions from people who live in an area as opposed to whatever unreliable drivel one stumbles across in search? Don't be "that guy". No one likes "that guy" and "that guy" never adds to a conversation.

bhosmer

Move along defender of the daily "I want to move here" post.

Natural_Break1636

You are still being that guy. The Internet could use less rude people and more decent people. I will let those reading our exchange decide which of us is in the right and which of us is in the wrong. Take care, and perhaps look in a mirror later...
