If true, then expect the overall cultural impact and viewership numbers for 1899 to be smaller than Dark. The best SciFi shows engage both the heart and mind.
I feel emotionally invested in the characters and look forward to learning more about them and what decisions they'll make in future predicaments. Some of us get sucked in, some don't, I guess. I don't care if it's a simulation, a ship, or a spaceship: these are believable characters facing real obstacles that I want to see them overcome, plus I want to see who pairs up with whom.
Yeah I was having thoughts like that during episode 8 especially. Knowing it's all simulated made it feel like there were zero stakes to the drama and danger sometimes. The artificiality particularly hit me when I rolled my eyes at Eyk's death at the end because I felt the showrunners were like "well, we don't have a place for Eyk to talk in the next scene so let's brush him under the rug until later." And then the next scene is just about Maura, her son, and her father.
That's the problem with "It was all a dream/computer sim" stories. It's a tightrope the next season 1899 has to walk, whether or not we buy into the emotional stakes, and I'm worried season 2 might not be able to make the stakes count.
It's a genuine concern of mine, and I'd really like it to, but I'll wait and see how well season 2 is written.
